Mike Mitchell needs surgery, but says it isn’t a story

Featured Replies

Steelers safety Mike Mitchell has a reason for why he didn’t play to his own expectations this year, but he doesn’t want it to sound like an excuse.

Via Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Mitchell said he needed surgery to repair a groin injury that flared up before the start of training camp.

He still started 17 games, but said he wasn’t himself all season.

“If you have to get it surgically repaired, it’s pretty [bad],” Mitchell said. “I am not trying to make this a story. Sometimes I have to be able to talk to you like human beings.”

I am glad Mike isn't making excuses. However, at least spindoc knows why his favorite player didn't get it done this year.

Even Tomlin didn't buy that excuse. He sucks, and would have been better suited not to say a word. I posted in the final game thread, it will now assure him that he will be back in Pittsburgh, and unless they pull Revis out of a hat, this secondary is gonna suck again.

God, I used to rate Kordell Stewart as my least favorite Steeler, but Mitchell has so far surpassed him for me. Just the thought of him in that secondary makes me want to pull everyone's freakin' teeth who walk in this building today.:madman:

He SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUcks.

Your love and devotion to Mitchell only rivals my true respect for Andy Dalton

Mitchell put Green out.

Like it or not, that was a big play.

He put Green out, didn't make a play on the ball, didn't cause the fumble, didn't have a clue where it was. He was there on that play because he was slow to get there and it developed slowly. It had zero effect on the game.

It had an effect against Indy.

It had an effect on the Bengals. It had no effect on the Steelers. In fact, the whole season, the number of "free runners" in the back of the endzone, and often when there was only one in the pattern, was perhaps the most outstanding display of freakin' awful of the whole picture. That coupled with the fact, that to my knowledge, he will be credited with 3 passes defended all season. And one of those was a ball that the receiver caught but had one foot out of bounds and Mitchell pushed him the rest of the way out, would have been a completion and he had no effect on the outcome either way. He had at least 6 flags for shots to the head. He missed countless tackles, most of which are because he's unwilling to wrap. There is no way on God's green earth, I'll credit him for any positives throughout this season with the slim expection that he caused one fumble while going in for a shot. That was so long ago, I can't even recall the opponent. Torn groin, right!

Disagree Doc, it was payback for the Reggie Nelson hit on Bell.

Like him or not, Mike Mitchell has a place in the NFL.

Mike Mitchell has one purpose in the NFL. To injure as many guys as possible. The dude is a head-hunter, and a head-hunter only.

Spindoc is right on. He's terrible at everything else, but laying guys out.

Oh please. You give him way too much credit to have the foresight to offer a quid pro quo. He was late to the play, which by his own poor positioning and reaction, put him in position to do the only thing he is able to, and that's lead with the shoulder and helmet. And I respect your opinion on all things NFL, but respectfully disagree that he has any place as a starting safety in this league when he can't do the two main things required of the position, and that's tackle and make plays on the ball.

Mike Mitchell, even after his best season (which is a total abberation by the way), didn't exactly have a bidding war going on. He landed on a team that has a GM that is freakin' awful at evaluating free agents.
