2015 Newport Central Catholic Preview

Featured Replies

Alright boys and girls it’s that time of the year, so let’s get the fastpitch talk started. And with that said here is the 2015 preview of NewCath fastpitch.

Head Coach Denny Barnes and the NewCath Thoroughbreds look to improve upon last season’s 18-11 record, and regain the District Title. Once again, it was a tale of two seasons, as the Breds came out of the gate winning 11 of the 1st 14 games. However, from the All "A" State tourney to the end of the season the Breds were only 7-8. NewCath once again looked to avenge two regular season losses to district rival Highlands and claim it's 6th district title since 2006, but the Breds lost a 2-1 despite Fr. Haley Meyer's 2-hitter. The 2014 season ended with a very disappointing 2-0 loss to Conner in the opening round of the 9th Region tourney at Northern Kentucky University, as Fr. Haley Meyer's throws a 1-hitter and K's 9. Despite the Breds 6 hits, they could never get a runner past 2nd base.

The 2015 campaign will be without two players lost to graduation, 4 year starter Taylor Burkart (.313, 26H, 15R, 19RBI) and 2 year starter Molly Mertle (.269, 21H, 16R, 11RBI). Molly Mertle's loss will be felt because every one of her 21 hits seemed to be key hits, and she did play a solid rightfield. The loss of Taylor Burkart will definitely be missed in the field, as she played all 9 position in her 4 year varsity career. Although her 4 errors in 2014 were as many as she committed in the previous 3 seasons. She was also NKSCA DII 1st Team.

Returning Starters

Seniors - Loren Zimmerman, Michaela Ware, Sarah Neace, Kristen Schreiber, Casey Kohls, & Morgan Martini.

Sophomore - Haley Meyers.

Sr. Kristen Schreiber (.395, 34H, 32R, 20RBI, 17 2B, .651 SLG%) – The catcher returns for her 4th season behind the “dish” and has the strongest arm in NKY. With “pop times” of between 1.75 & 1.82, in her career she has thrown out over 50% of would be base stealers. She currently ranks 1st in career 2B (30), 3B (8), HR (6) & 2nd in RBI (64) & 2nd in SLG% .543. She was also NKSCA DII 1st Team & Kentucky Enquirer 2nd Team.

Sr. Casey Kohls (.271, 26H, 30R, 19RBI, 10SB) – Casey comes into the 2015 season as a 7 year varsity starter, when you add in 6th, 7th & 8th grade at Dayton. The teams leading hitter as a Fr. & So., the 2014 season average wise was down, but you could count on her not giving up and playing with heart. She is currently 2nd in career hits (111), 2B (16), 3B (8), Runs (91), SB (29), and either 3rd or 4th in 4 others. Before it’s all said and done she will own most of the career offensive marks. She was also NKSCA DII 2nd Team.

Sr. Michaela Ware (.484AVG, 31H, 24R, 12RBI) – Another member of a very talented sr. class, Michaela is a career hitting .385 spark plug that sets the table offensively. If you have seen her play hoops or soccer you know she can “FLY”. Career wise, she currently ranks 2nd in career BA (.385), 3rd OB% (.442) 3rd in hits (102), & 4th in runs (80).

Sr. Loren Zimmerman (.395, 32H, 21R, 20RBI, 7 2B) – The most competitive player on the team and one of the best defensive "hot corner" players in the region, Loren will give you her best. If you have ever seen her on the soccer field or basketball court, you get the same on the softball field. Career wise, she is top 10 in Avg (.316), OB% (.399), SLG% (.462), 3rd in 2B 11 & RBI (63). She was also NKSCA DII 1st Team.

Sr. Sarah Neace (.254, 17H, 13R, 9RBI.) Sarah saw her role move to 1st base this past season, although she did get 8 appearances in the circle. She also picked up her 2nd career No-hitter.

Sr. Morgan Martini (.306, 26H, 18R, 14RBI, 5 2B, 2 3B) – Another solid season turned in by the returning centerfielder. Morgan possess a strong arm and can track-down a ball in the outfield. With a good year of summer ball under her belt, I would expect her to improve on last seasons numbers.

So.. Haley Meyers (17-9, 145IP, 169K's, 2.26ERA) – It was a "breakout" year for Haley. Get a load of these numbers.......She pitched five no-hitters (two were perfect games), three one-hitters (one with two-out in the 7th) and seven two-hitters. This young lady has SOOOOO much potential to play at the next level. She was also NKSCA DII Co-Player of the Year & Kentucky Enquirer 1st Team.

There are 4 sophomores who all are 2 year JV starters who will be vying for a few varsity starting positions:

1st/SS/P - Kennedy Bin

Inf/OF - Alex Burkart

Inf/OF - Lexie Potts

Inf/OF - Kathryn Schreiber

As well as, one freshman who more than likely will be a starter in INF, Lexi Breen.

6 Seniors is Huge!! Good ones at that I might say. Good Luck to the Breds:thumb:

Nice job Lawnboy, I will work on getting Madisonville North review done this week.

You guys play Bracken this year?

No, not on the schedule as of yet.

Nice job as always lawnboy, your support for girls fast pitch is unmatched, will try and get some info out on Cooper down the road, good luck to the Bred's except maybe one game, you all will be strong as always, that is becoming a very good district with Highlands, Newport, a improved Dayton team and a new coach to lead the tigers, good luck to all.

I'll ask you the same thing I asked RCC9...are there any 10th region opponents on your schedule?

Looking forward to another fun season of softball! Go Breds!

Somebody tell Lawnboy it snowed last night. It's not softball season yet!!

Just kidding! Well done!

We at Cooper play Campbell Co. Very early in the season and also play Brossart
