coach2709 Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 The game was played at Pikeville College due to the replacement of lights at Pikeville High School. Chase Huffman started the game and went 4 and looked good for 4 innings. He was relieved by Josh Staggs and Griffin Hall. The Panthers committed 6 errors in the game. This was the first chance for alot of new faces to hit the field for the Panthers with the 7 seniors lost to graduation last year. Umpiring was good for the most part. The umpire at first base tonight made some calls that left alot of people shaking their heads for both teams. One example was Pikeville has runner on first base with one out. The ball is hit on the ground in the infield. The fielder fields the ball and throws to second base. The Pikeville runner slides into second base and the shortstop for Woodridge falls down after making the throw. The runner slides directly into the bag. The umpire rules the runner obstructed the fielder and calls the runner running to first out, by the way he beat the throw. I don't think the call was ever explained to the Pikeville dug out. Woodridge's starting pitcher has signed with a Division 1 school. I believe it is with the University of Buffalo, NY.
dolamite Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 Suprised to see a Pikeville team commit six errors. I know much of their defense has been replaced, but year in year out Pikeville has relied mainly on Defense and Pitching, this giving them the ability to score an average of three runs, and still dominate the 15th (along with JC and Paintsville who are known for their hitting) Im sure Lawson's boys will have the fielding kinks worked out and be in mid season flow shortly.
Buck Master Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 Last year was an exception in that Pikeville averaged about 9 runs per game to go with a defense that allowed only 2.5 per game. Coach Lawson will have this fixed midway through the season. I saw some bright spots in the game last night. Coach will have to find the right mix of players to fill the voids left from last year. He is replacing all of the infield and 2 outfielders from last year. This will be a very solid club by May. Good luck Panthers and not a bad showing against a very solid club.
15thSportsFan Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 I agree Buck. They are simply trying to replace guys with ones that are not as good. And they are greatly inexperienced as well. But i think they will be a very good team come tournament time.

All of the errors could possibly come from the changes in the playing surface, Pikevilles team is normally playing on the sweet turf that they have lol. I would say they got some hops they arent used to at the college field. When they get back to their old stomping ground they will be fine.
MOUNTAINFOOTBALL Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 Pikeville will struggle early but they have the top coach in the 15th region IMO and they will be in position to repeat as region champs come tournament time...when will the lights be ready so Pikeville can play on their field instead of the Pikeville College field?
Buck Master Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 I heard they tested the lights today, so hopefully we will be home by next week. Pikeville does have the top coach in eastern kentucky and will be right in the hunt come regional time.

Pikeville is used to playing natural though also being they play an abundant amount of away games. But yes this could have something to do with it, but I think its merely just because of the new faces and it being early Spring.

Pikeville hosts the 15th region All A next week. I assume that it will be ready by then?
