Cats Pause 1st Region Preview

Featured Replies

I noticed on a preview for Mayfield that several names were mentioned but Kennemore wasn't??

Is he not playing basketball this year?

Mayfield

Head Coach: Chris Guhy

District: 3rd

Record last year: 13-16 (9-14*)

Summary:

Mayfield lost four senior from a team that won 13 games last season. They do however return their leading scorer from last season 6’3” senior Marshall Bacon, a slasher that is one of the top scorers in the region. They also return another senior in guard/forward Nick Felts. Coach Guhy also expects a trio of juniors and two sophomores to contribute as well. The juniors are 6’2” Zach Tyler, 5’8” Noel Roland and 6’0” Artie Kirby. The sophomores are 5’8” Trajon Bright and 6’1” Anton Lumson, a skilled wing.

Coach Guhy will be keeping his guys local for tournaments; they’ll play at Paducah Tilghman before Christmas and at Hickman County after Christmas. They also have a scheduled out of region game against Webster County.

Mayfield has an inexperienced and undersized team coming into the season, but Coach Guhy is excited about his team and really likes his guard play. He expects his team to compete for a district title as well as an All ‘A’ Classic tournament title, although he admits Murray is the favorite to represent the 1st region in Frankfort.

I've heard of several teams having 6'4" guys but does any team have size or a true big man this year?

With Rentfro and Arnett graduating who are the big men in the region?

Graves has 6'10" Vogt but do they have any size to help him out? Does anyone else in the region have anyone close to his size?

I think Graves has another kid that is 6-7. Calloway has Hunter who is 6-7. Seems like there will be a lot of 6-4's but no real big men.

Hunter for Calloway is 6'7" but he isn't a post threat. He likes to stand at the arch and shoot the 3 ball.

I agree with you that he likes to shoot the three but he is still a post threat. He is 6-7 and athletic.

From what I'm hearing everyone is already crowning Calloway as district Champs. I think a very athletic Tilghman team will have something to say about that. They have freshman better than anyone on Calloway's team. It could end up a Tilghman vs McCracken region Championship in Region 1.

The 4th district with Calloway, Murray, and Marshall will be a good fight. With a top team getting left out of the region tournament. 1st and 3rd district will be down this year.

I know you are talking about Reed as that freshman, but to say he is better than anyone on Calloway's roster is pretty strong. I think he has the potential to be at some point, but there are some solid kids on that roster including the preseason #1 player who will be starting for the fifth year in a row. I think PT will definitely be a challenger, but I'm not ready to crown them yet. Next year is a different story.
