It's the Annual City Championship, AKA, "Battle for the Bell as the 1-4 Breds take on the 3-3 Wildcats. NewCath owns a 41-18-1 advantage in this series, with the Breds winning the last 14. The last time the Wildcats took home the Fireman's Bell was in 1999.

The Wildcats come into this game, winners of 2 straight, while the Breds come off the Bye week after winning their 1st game of the season the week before over previously unbeaten Lloyd. Newport features a couple of talented players in senior RB, Dominic Joseph (BTW, I really like this kid), senior QB, Paul Price, senior OL/DL Breandon Johnson, & junior WR, Ryan Ochoa.

NewCath comes into this game without EVER losing to a 2A district opponent since 2007, and an overall 52-5 record against all 2A opponents (3 losses in state finals, 2 in regional finals). From all indications the Breds are 100% healthy and ready for Friday nights action.

Newport (3-3)

Aug 23, 14 3A Mason County (L) 28-32

Aug 29, 14 2A Walton-Verona (W) 36-26

Sep 12, 14 5A Scott (L) 14-31

Sep 19, 14 1A Williamsburg (L) 22-31

Sep 26, 14 xx Pendleton County (W) 62-13

Oct 03, 14 2A Bishop Brossart (W) 55-0

Newport Catholic (1-4)

Aug 29, 14 5A Cooper (L) 0-31

Sep 05, 14 6A Campbell County (L) 17-30

Sep 12, 14 6A Simon Kenton (L) 13-46

Sep 20, 14 6A Dixie Heights (L) 13-34

Sep 26, 14 2A Lloyd (W) 28-0

Whatta got on this one? Do the Wildcats hand the Breds their 1st ever district loss?

I will go with Newport. NCC still has some proving to do.

First time I've looked forward to the battle for the bell in quite a while. I think the Breds should win.

What has Newport proven? What, they can beat up on weak opponents? I will go with NCC by 14

What has NCC proven? This will be a dandy of a game. I know people don't like to think that Newport has a chance, but the reality of it is that they do.

I was responding to the post that NCC still has to prove themselves so again what has Newport proven nothing! They can beat weak teams, sorry but the reality is Newport would not have beaten a team that NCC played the first 4 wks. So again I will say NCC by 14.

I agree they wouldn't have. But NewCath was destroyed, and looked bad in those games. Mason Co and Williamsburg are no scrubs. Scott isn't bad either. But to each his own. We all have opinions.

Similar to the NCC-Lloyd game....NCC wins easily.

Williamsburg shot themselves in the foot with all of their offside penalties. WV rb didn't play the 2nd half, and Newport would have been destroyed as well!! But your right each to his own we will see Friday night.

Don't get so upset that someone thinks Newport will win.

Newcath wins this one. Newport hasn't proved anything, they haven't beat a team that Newcath wouldn't have beaten. And there's no way that they would have beaten any of those teams that Newcath lost to. I heard the same thing last week, that Lloyd was going to beat Newcath because Newcath hasn't won a game. There's a reason Newcath plays the teams they do and that is one of the main reasons why Newcath has NEVER lost to a district team during regular season (since moving to 2A). Is Newport better than last year?? Yes, defiantly, but better than Newcath?? No way!! Newcath wins this one by at least 2tds. Newcath has proven themselves year in and year out, playing a tough schedule gets them practicing on thanksgiving morning and playing in Bowling Green in December. Newcath is the king of the hill (literally), until someone in their district knocks them off. Will that be this Friday?? No!

Upset, not at all! I have no doubt this will be a good game, I just believe NCC will win.

I feel the same way!

NCC by a bunch

I think Newport's inability to throw the ball effectively will be a big factor in this game. Newport has good size on the line and speed in the backfield but so did Lloyd. NCC had to defend against Lloyd's passing offense and the Juggs were still was unable to run the ball effectively. My guess is that NCC stacks the box and Newport has trouble sustaining drives. Joseph runs the ball hard and Price can be elusive so they may get loose a couple times, but long deliberate drives will be a problem for the Wildcats.
