NKYVB Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 (edited) Notre Dame beats Cooper 2-1 (25-9, 24-26, 25-10) NDA serving big winner here. Cooper couldn't pass to save their lives in games 1 & 3 and pandas let nothing drop, therefore Cooper was unable to run an efficient offense. When they did manage to pass the ball, they hit very efficiently. Cooper scrapped all of game 2 and hit very efficiently. Many long rallies that fell both ways. Game 3 was all NDA defense and serving. Again, they couldn't pass the ball, leading to many free balls and the pandas ran their offense quick and Cooper defense couldn't catch up. Not the Jaguars' best match but showed the potential. Can't wait for regional tournament. It should be an interesting year. Edited September 27, 2014 by hoops5 Thread Title
MyShadow Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Were you at the game NKYVB? I wasn't there, but the people that I talked to that were at the game didn't make it sound so bad for Cooper? Maybe they were focused only on the 2nd game - which looks like it was pretty good!
volleymom Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 I was there. Your analysis was pretty accurate. NDA came out a little flat in game 2 and Cooper got confident after jumping out to a 4-1 lead. Katie Smith was terrific. Morgan Hentz was good but made more errors than normal. NDA scored a lot of easy points on middle sets when Katie was in the back row. I though it would be a better match but Cooper is not ready to make that leap yet.
BlueChip Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 I have a question about spiking. When the girls in the front row spike, sometimes, the will not spike and just kind of tap the ball over the blockers head. I like when this happens, it seems to work really well; however, you just don't see the girls do that to often. I'm curious, is this as good of a move as these un-trained eyes think? Why don't they do it more often instead of getting the ball blocked?
Zap Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Why was this match only 2 out of 3 sets? It appeared from earlier statements that Cooper fan thought they had a shot at the victory yet they agreed to only play 2 of 3? I know typically 2 of 3 is used for matches that are deemed to be mismatches to speed up the inevitable. I'm guessing nda was willing to go 3 of 5 but Cooper wasn't . And it was a 9th region matchup . Appears Cooper coaches don't share Cooper fans optimism on strength of squad.

Our team has never played NDA 3/5 and we are in their region too. We have played a lot of teams 2/3 and it had nothing to do with a mismatch or "speeding up the inevitable." I'm sure there is reasoning behind why some are 3 and some are 5, but I would like to believe there is a little more science to it than your comment.

NDA's athletic director can ask for 2/3 sets all they want but it has to be agreed upon by both schools or it reverts to the 3/5 . My question was if Cooper felt competitive why would they possibly agree to play 2/3? And it is absolutely to speed up what is deemed a mismatch? Do you have another explanation? Why do you think nda sets this up with the public schools? C'mon it's common sense. But since Cooper took a set I would guess they are sorry they didn't have a shot at set 4 and 5 to get the victory.

I can't speak for Cooper, but in our case my AD has asked to play 3/5 but NDA always insists on 2/3. I think NDA has a new AD this year, so maybe that will change in the future. I guess I just object to your statement because we all know that in this game, you can never guarantee what will happen and on any given night. Even a team as good as NDA can drop a match to a "mismatched" team. I'm sure the Cooper girls were excited to at least take one from them! Not a lot of teams can say that...

Both have to agree to 2/3 or it has to be 3/5. So despite what you say that NDA refuses to play 3/5 they would be forced to if Cooper wanted to. Cooper could force their hand . 3/5 is the official rules for Kentucky volleyball matches unless both teams agree to 2/3. So no Cooper doesn't want or didn't want 3/5. You also said NDA plays only 2/3 against public schools. False. They played Dixie, Scott, and Boone 3/5. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they will play Ryle 3/5. My only point was I was shocked the Cooper admin didn't feel they could compete like the fans who have gotten on here and declared Cooper a region contender and said they might pull the upset .

When was the last time NDA last to a "mismatched" team. Last loss to any local NKy team was P4P match vs St. Henry when Bessler and Fortner were seniors. Hardly call that a mismatch. Choose your words carefully.

I'm a fan of NDA - and Morgan in particular! BUT I think it's risky to think that ANY team can't be beaten by a team that may be considered the underdog. Just because it hasn't happened, doesn't mean that it won't. That's why we love this game like we do!
NKYVB Posted September 24, 2014 Author Posted September 24, 2014 MyShadow, Cooper is ONLY public school to take a set from NDA so far this year. NDA has yet to play Ryle, though.
frankdracman23 Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Personally if it is a school night and a Frosh/JV/Varsity match I can see a team asking for a 2 out 3 match for time considerations
