OK.....we go through this every year, so on the eve/eve of the Freshman tournament.....here is my take....

 

Players can play in the Freshman tournament ....even if they play only Varsity......because it is a "class tournament."

 

HOWEVER......if a player plays a majority of time and gets minutes on Varsity, he should NOT play in the JV tournament......no matter how old they are....because it is NOT a class tournament.

 

 

every year, teams send varsity players to the JV tournament....we even had one team send a Varsity player that received a red card in the day before in a Varsity game, to play in the JV tournament the next day..........

Unless I'm misinterpreting your definition of "class" the Freshman tournament isn't just for Freshman, it's the Freshman team. These teams consists of 7th through 9th graders. If you're a Freshman who is on the Varsity team (starter or coming off the bench) you should not be playing in that tournament. If you start over 50% of the matches for Varsity and you're not a senior (obviously) you should not be playing in the JV tournament. These are the unwritten rules amongst coaches that are not always abided by, especially some of the new coaches.

If these guidelines are understood by the coaches, maybe they should actually consider making them part of the Tournament Rules, this will help to make sure that everyone "abides" by the same criteria.

 

I also bring this up because I have heard both coaches, and players, make statements about playing down only because so and so always does with their players. I am not saying this is right, just saying that some are making decisions because there are no set rules that ensure everyone is approaching these tournaments the same way and they do not want other teams to get the upperhand so they do the same thing.

Freshman team would consist of 9th graders, and could include lower grades if the team needs them.

 

JV could consist of any kids that are a Freshman, Sophomore, or Junior... regardless of what level they normally play during regular season?

 

JV scenario to consider for this debate... What if a team could field a lineup for the JV tournament that consisted of 8 kids that currently start for their Varsity squad?

No rules about how to do it. Play anyone. No excuses.

The same thing happens in all the high school sports.

In the long run, I don't think it's how winning programs are made. So you win the JV tournament, who cares? I played HS football. As a sophomore, I played JV. A junior that played significant minutes on varsity would also start ahead of me and play most of the minutes in the JV game. The varsity coaches could never figure out why we would have 80 eight graders go out for football, but only 10 seniors. Most had quit after their sophomore year.

I see your point but disagree with it. Use the Freshman Showcase in the begininning of the year to showcase your Freshman/FROSH, not the tournament. To Yellowcard's point there should be rules. What message are you sending the kids that have played for over half the season and now their minutes will be limited because kids are being dropped because they want the hardware? Yeah, kids say "Well so and so does it why can't we." "So what" would be my response... I want to see how my team that I've had throughout the season performs and how much we've improved against some of the best. Everyone wants to win, but at what cost... it's sad. Some of the new coaches don't understand it. Nathan (at Boone) made this mistake his first year with O'Hara. O'Hara asked if he could play with his friends, Nathan didn't see why not. All the comments got back to him and he hasn't done it since.

 

And JV is defined... so there is the distinction between the two squads and the percentage of starting time. Again, to Yellowcard's point... more of a reason for it to be in writing.

Agree with frosh......not,JV. If,you play significant minutes for varsity, you should not play JV........

 

When everyone elects me soccer czar, I would make each team n the JV tournament schedule a varsity seeding game during the same time as their JV plays in the tournament. You will then have a true JV tournament....

Only snag with this idea would be for the teams that rely on JV players to spell the Varsity kids during their matches.
