Had a JV officiating crew on the field at Collins tonight. Are you allowed to end a game on a penalty? Because I sure didn't think so...but they sure did.

Good win Collins!

Good win for Collins over their rival? Yes.

Good win, made by strong football playing and solid execution? Not so much.

I'll have more comments when I get home, but to head you off at the pass, this Collins win is nothing for Simon Kenton fans to brag on in terms of strength of schedule for the Pioneers and their opponents.

Collins offense = nonexistent

Defense, not so bad, but offense is a huge struggle. I think it will be very tough for Collins to finish over .500 because they simply cannot move the ball at all. You can't win if you can't score.

The crowd tonight was great. There is a lot of support for football in this community even though both teams are down.

I imagine you probably did not consider the possibility that the offended team simply declined the penalty. I believe they may do so - and end the game.

Like SK, Collins showed how they can handle those 1-3 teams.

Collins managed just 216 yards of offense, 111 rushing and 105 passing. They gave up 224 yards to Shelby County and just 69 rushing on 32 carries.

Yes, declining that penalty is an option, but in this case, the penalty was called (I'm not even too sure what the penalty was, though, as it was never signaled/indicated by the refs), and then the Collins team had already ran back to their sideline to celebrate the win, and the Shelby County players were walking back to their sidelines as well. The refs all huddled in the center of the field near the goal line and discussed the penalty while the teams gathered at midfield, lined up, and had already begun handshakes when the white hat picked up the ball and signaled that the contest was over. The players and coaches were all 50 yards away.

That notwithstanding, the officiating was still rough-at-best given the number of questionable calls I saw throughout the game. I spent the first half on the Shelby County side of things, and the second half on the Collins side, and there were complaints coming from the crowd and the sidelines of both teams about the officiating. I had no dog in the fight to have much opinion about who was or wasn't on the losing end of the calls...but it was a poorly officiated game all around.

Collins didn't look too bad, but they have a lot of improvement to make in several aspects - particularly on offense. Their offensive line didn't get much of a push off the line, and their pass protection was not very good. Collins was probably tackled 15+ times in their backfield. The quarterback struggled some with accuracy, although admittedly he was also throwing after scrambling from defenders, and he threw into fairly heavy coverage on numerous occasions. As I said in the game thread, their defensive line looked very nice - couple of big guys up front who did a great job jamming the line up front and giving good pressure. Their linebackers did a good job of swarming the ball and they seemed to hit fairly well. Their defensive backfield needed to work on getting a better look right off the snap - they seemed to react a little slower than you would like them too, but I saw some good improvement in the second half, as was evidenced by their interceptions.

Shelby County had a few good athletes on the field, but apart from a couple of players (I'm not familiar with the roster so I can't reference very well here), they seemed to lack in the skill positions in particular. Their quarterback looked decent, and when he had a decent pocket to throw from, his passes looked good. They didn't have much size on either side of the ball though, and there were a lot of mental breakdowns on the Shelby County side of things - as evidenced by the three penalties for too many players on the field and the illegal substitution penalty, among others. Shelby County's program has obviously suffered after being cut in half by the Collins opening it's doors.
