Bishop Brossart 1 Highlands 1 (Boys)

Featured Replies

Tie game at the Fort on Tuesday night. Just Brossart's second game since August 20th, but reports are that we played sharp and that Highlands keeper did a yeoman's job in keeping us off of the scoreboard until late in the game.

The Mustangs dominated the first half in shots, corner kicks, and time of possession. The Mustangs had 7 shots, 5 on goal. The Bluebirds didn’t get a shot off in the first half. The Mustangs also had 6 corner kicks to 1 for Highlands in the first half, but after 40 minutes of play the score was 0-0.

In the 51st minute the Bluebirds got on the scoreboard first on an "own goal" by Brossart. The Mustang player was attempting to clear out a ball and accidentally blasted the ball in the side netting for the 1-0 lead.

The Mustangs again had many opportunities in the second half, but the Highland’s keeper did his best for the home team as he made 10 saves on the night. With 12 minutes remaining in the match, Highlands got off one of their rare shots that was looking top right corner that Brossart Keeper Jeff Paulin made an incredible punch out to give the Mustangs a chance to for a tie.

In the 71st minute when it looked like Highlands might win for the second year in a row off an "own goal", the Mustangs struck with a Jon Henn pass to Nick Dierig that Nick sent low and hard past the keeper for the equalizer.

The Mustangs defense was impressive as they smothered the Birds who only had 6 shots on the night all coming in the second half. The Mustangs offense had a few more opportunities, but fell short and Mustangs leave Fort Thomas with a tie.

I am with you on the ties in soccer. I guess the Euros are okay with that sort of thing since it's their sport. We Americans want a winner and a loser.

Funny thing is, even with a tie, there is usually a winner and a loser. Unless teams are very evenly matched and are able to equally control the ball and play in each others end a similar amount of time, one team feels bad about a tie and the other team feels good. I have experienced all three possibilities as a fan. Not sure how the coaches feel.

Last night, I didn't feel bad that Boone and NCC tied. They have done it before and seem to be fairly evenly matched, though I will say that Boone was down two players last evening. Both teams probably went away feeling blah but knowing the game could have easily gone against them.

I have felt bad about a tie, like earlier this year against Dixie when Boone had a 4-0 advantage into the second half and squandered it away to a tie. Dixie fans were jubilant, Boone fans, not so much.

I felt really proud of a tie last year in Lexington when Boone played Dunbar, which was the top one or two team in the state at the time. Dunbar held a 3-0 lead going into the final 10 minutes when lightening struck. Boone scored 3 goals in that amount of time to tie the game. The Boone team had an ability to score in bunches last year. The Dunbar coach came over and complimented the Boone team for their tenacious play. I felt good about the tie.

What is with " own goals" this year? That is the 3 rd one I've heard of so far this year......
