Game Report Cincinnati Mt. Healthy 40 Beechwood 34

Featured Replies

The night cap of the triple header in Cincinnati yesterday was a battle, no make that a war pitting two very talented teams against each other.

From my great state was The Fighting Owls of Mt. Healthy and from the great state of Kentucky was the machine known as Beechwood.

Things got started with a thunder for Beechwood, when Kyle Fieger hooked up with Jeremy Burns for 35-yards. The drive ended three plays and one yard later, as the fighting Owls was not going to let a lighting quick score take place just minutes into the game.

A big reason for the drive ending was a 2-yards loss by the Tigers, when they suffered a two yard loss on a play where Fieger recovered a Tigers fumble.

David Montgomery, the very underrated quarterback for Mt. Healthy connected with DeShawn Jackson for a 16-yard gain, with 7:09 remaining in the quarter.

Brayden Combs , a 6-5 230 pound Jr. swatted a pass away by Montgomery forcing the Fighting Owls into 4TH and 11 situation, with 4:49 showing on the clock.

Eleven seconds later Hiavier Pitts broke free for a forty-yard score, but a block in the back negated the score but allowed the Cincinnati team to keep the ball.

1:57 was the time remaining when one of the most talented players I have seen this season, Brett Slusher sacked Montgomery for a 10-yard loss forcing the Owls into a 3rd and 21 spot.

1:26 into was left in the first frame when Brett (MR. MONEY IN THE BANK) Slusher swatted a Montgomery pass away saving a Mt. Healthy touchdown.

Slusher was not done show casing his skills just :26 left into the 2nd quarter he planted Pitts hard into the turf for a 8-yard loss.

Jackson would haul in a beautifully thrown ball by Montgomery to go 51-yards for the games first score. The point after kick by Kendre Smith was blocked by, you guessed it, Slusher. So with 10:31 left in the half the score stayed at, 6-0 Fighting Owls.

Fieger would be sacked by Devonta Johnson for a 2-yard loss, with 10:00 left in the half. The Fighting Owls defense seemed to have a lot of speed, some size and a know how to do what their coaches were asking them to do.

The Tigers got another complication from Fieger to Jeremy Burns, with 9:26 left in the half, but Burns put the ball on the turf and Danny Johnson from Mt. Healthy came up with it. At this point of the game it was like watching the Tigers take a step or two forward and then taking a step or two backwards.

At the 8:21 mark of the half Montgomery sprinted for 18 yards showing he has so get up and go and was not afraid to show that skill.

Mt Healthy scored again with 7:05 left int he half, when Montgomery ran in from 13-yards out. Montgomery put some icing on the cake by scoring a two point conversion run after the touchdown. The drive went for 38-yards and last for 38-yards.

14-0 Mt Healthy.

With 6"47 left in the half Fieger again hit Burns, this time for 35-yards and a big first down.

The offense was shut down a short time later and the Fighting Owls was set to get the ball again.

Montgomery would hit a 41-yard bomb to DeShawn Jackson with only 3:45 left in the half. The nine play 65-yard drive ended with Pitts scoring from six-yards out. Smith made it 21-0 with his point after kick.

The last minute of the half could have taken everything out of the Tigers but as we would see in the 2nd half this team has no quit in it as they played their rear ends off. The first play that could have killed the Tigers came when Slusher proved he was man not machine by dropping a pass in the end zone. the last one came when Fieger was sacked for a 6-yard loss by Milan Lanier and Elijah Williams.

:15 seconds into the 2nd half the Fighting Owls got a 15-yard gain by Pitts. Then facing a third and sixteen the Owls converted, when Montgomery connected with DeShawn Jackson again. Montgomery would cap this scoring drive off when he hit pay dirt from six yards out. The point after increased the lead to, 28-0 with 8:52 showing on the clock.

The drive took 8 plays and totaled 51-yards.

Beechwood use the feet of Burns, who carried the ball a few times to work the ball down field. Then on the tenth play of the drive Fieger hit Jonathan Stokes for a 11-yard score.Mario German made it a, 28-7 score with his point after kick, with 4:34 left in the third.

Beechwood lined up in punt formation with 1:33 left in the quarter, but instead of punting the ball Joe Studer took off on for a first down run and then got 15 additional yards when Mt,Healthy was called for a personal foul. Just :15 seconds later Studer scored on a 35-yard run and after the point after we had a, 28-14 game. This drive went for 70-yards and took just five plays.

With Uncle Moe clearly on the Tigers side I am sure the Fighting Owls knew they needed something special and needed it as soon as possible. That is just what they got when Pitts to the ensuing kickoff 80-yards and would have scored if not for a big play by Grant Plageman, who caught the speedster at the 14.

Pitts ended the short 3-play 14-yard drive with a five yard run. The point after was wide left leaving the score,34-14 Fighting Owls with :23.3 left in the quarter.

Beechwood would again go on a nice long drive doing whatever the defense gave them and then on the drives tenth play of the drive Fieger hooked up with Studer on a nice looking 27-yard pass play. The point after was no good.

34-20 Fighting Owls with 9:39 left in the game.

The Tigers defense roared loudly and proudly as they shut down the potent offense of Mt. Healthy and got the ball back for their own explosive offense.

With 5:48 left in this epic battle of powerful teams Slusher took of on a very nice looking 47-yard run.

Then at the 5:19 mark of the final frame it was Fieger and #37 Studer teaming up again for a six-yard score, with Studer making a diving catch for the score. The point after kick made this a 7 point game, 34-27. The drive took five plays and went for fifty-nine-yards.

With 4:14 left Beechwood forced a punt when Grant Plageman had tight coverage on his man and deflected the ball away from him.

The game had a gigantic change of Momentum when Mt. Healthy got a interception. I apologize for not knowing who picked it off, but the Fighting Owls jerseys were hard to read from up in the press box, for me. The pick looked to come from #8Comist or #9 Kenneth English, with 3:39 left.

The ensuing drive took 5-plays totaling 35-yards. Scoring on a 1-yard run was, Montgomery.

The point after kicked was tipped by Burns leaving the score,40-27

The Tigers still refused to quit and with about a minute left Fieger hit Studer for a 40-yard gain and then with :36 left Fieger hit Burns for a 6-yard score. The point after made this a 40-34.

The Tigers attempted a onside type kick but the Fighting Owls recovered it and then ran the clock out to secure their hard fought victory.

Since I just finished my own report, I will go ahead and throw mine in here. I haven't read the one above but will as soon as I post mine. I will be interested in seeing how these reports compare.

First Quarter

Beechwood opened with a nice pass play to Burns but the drive stalled at the Mt. Healthy 33. The Tiger defense stuffed Mt. Healthy's first try on offense, but the Owls ran a fake punt on 4th down which didn't fool the Tigers but #21 Hjavier Pitts broke a couple through a couple tacklers and picked up the first down. Pitts would prove to be tough to handle for the Tigers all night. The Owls went on a long drive all the way down to first and goal, but could not get in the end zone. The Tigers sacked Owl QB David Montgomery, a D1 prospect, and took over on downs at their own 21.

Second Quarter

That Tiger possession was a three and out. The Owls got the ball back near midfield. Facing 3rd and 9, Montgomery went to what I will call "the Highlands pass". Basically, he threw it long and high down the left hash and let his receiver run to the ball. WR #5 DeShawn Jackson ran by Beechwood's CB, caught the ball at about the 5 and trotted into the end zone. That "Highlands pass" was run several times in the game and is the play that hurt the Tigers the most on the night. The extra point was no good, making the score 6-0 with 10:13 to go. Unfortunately for BW, their next offensive play was a lost fumble at their own 35. MH quickly took advantage with Montgomery scoring on a 13 yard run and then getting the 2 point conversion on a QB sneak. Montgomery showed his strength on that run. (He is more of a runner than a passer. He sure looks like a D1 player but probably not as a QB) With 7:05 to go, 14-0. Beechwood moved the ball on their next possession but was stopped on downs at the 35. MH then put together a good drive and Pitts scored on a 6 yard run, extra point good, 21-0 with 2:57 till halftime. Beechwood again put together a drive, this time an even better one. They moved the ball to the 6 yard line but could not score, making the halftime score MH 21 BW 0. The half was quite not as lopsided as the score. Mt. Healthy made a couple big plays and scored off the Beechwood fumble. The Tigers were clearly capable of playing with this team if they cut out the mistakes and executed better on offense.

Third Quarter

MH opened the second half with a scoring drive from their own 49 with Montgomery scoring from 6 yards out, extra point good, 28-0 at the 8:52 mark. Beechwood then started the comeback with QB Kyle Fieger and the passing game finally starting to connect. The Tigers drove the ball from their own 35 down the field and Fieger hit Jonathon Stokes catching a 10 yard TD pass. German’s extra point was good and the Tigers had some life trailing 28-7 with 4:34 left. The defense built the momentum forcing a 3 and out. It looked like the Tigers comeback would be short lived when they lined up for a punt, but Mr. Everything WR/RB/Slot/etc. Joe Studer faked the punt and ran for the first down. Then a few plays later, Studer took another Fieger pass into the end zone, scoring from 35 yards out. With 1:18 to go, it is looking more like a game with the score now 28-14. MH wasted no time in trying to stop BW’s comeback thoughts. Pitts returned the kickoff 80 yards down to the 14 and then went into the end zone a few plays later from 5 yards out. The extra point was missed but the lead was now 34-14 as the 3rd quarter ended.

Fourth Quarter

But Beechwood was on a roll. MH could not figure out how to stop the Tiger passing attack. Fieger again found Studer on a 27 yard TD pass at 9:39 to go , extra point no good, 34-20. MH could not respond. BW had made some changes that shut down the “Highlands pass” as MH again tried it on 3rd down but no success. That forced a punt after one first down by MH and BW had the ball back. The Tigers ran a reverse play to Brett Slusher and Slusher used his blocks, made cuts, threw in some speed and then bowled over a couple guys at the end before being brought down inside the 10 after an impressive 47 yard run. Fieger to Studer from 6 yards out plus an extra point made this a 34-27 game and there was still 5:19 left to play. BW’s defense forced another 3 and out and the Tigers had the ball with a chance to tie the score. MH’s defense finally came up with a play and intercepted a Fieger pass at the 35. MH kept it on the ground, let the D1 prospects show why they are D1 prospects and Montgomery powered into the end zone with 1:32 left to seemingly put the game away. The Tigers blocked the extra point but trailed 40-27. Beechwood was not done. A couple of plays into the next desperation drive, Fieger scrambled from pressure and hit Studer on a 41 yard pass to the 6. Then on the next play Fieger found Grant Plageman in the end zone from 6 yards out. In less than a minute, the Tigers once again were one score from a win at 40-34. With only 36 seconds left, it called for the onside kick. It almost worked. The ball was loose and players for both teams dove for it but a MH player made the recovery. BW still had all their timeouts, but MH’s Pitts made a nice run for a first down and that was the ball game.

Final Score

Mount Healthy 40 Beechwood 34

I like how newwarkcatholicfan included defensive player comments. I focus on the offense and scoring. Slusher is one of those players who has great football instincts and finds the ball. I am glad he got recognized for his efforts in this game.

Also, #55 Riley McKown, Beechwood defensive tackle looked really strong on defense. There was one play where Montgomery ran the ball off right tackle, broke a couple tackles and cut to the sideline with just one more DB to cut around. McKown pursued from tackle to the sideline and made the solo tackle that perhaps saved a TD. He showed very good speed and strength in making that play.

Nicely done. Thanks for the effort. Did Fieger end up with 4 TD passes or 5?

No worries. You did a great job as did Eye of the Tiger. Since the local newspapers do not do a very good job with game details we rely on you guys for this perspective.

I corrected the score, but I don't see the 4 touchdowns.
