Sleeper teams (boys)

As an outside observer I see both sides to this discussion. Here are my thoughts to Red Card's question.

On the positive side - CCH playing the stronger schedule may help keep them "grounded" and help them recognize their weaknesses and improve upon them. It allows them to prepare for the post season and may help keep "elusions of grandeur" to a minimum. On the down side, some CCH supporters will take an elitist attitude by touting "Look who we play", "Our schedule is so much stronger than the rest of NKY". When in reality, if you don't beat any of these teams, so what???

With Cooper's weaker schedule - on a positive side - They build a strong record and have area leading goal scorers. This garners attention and interest in the program which will help it continue to improve. On a negative side, supporters will put way too much stock in that record and goal differential and then wonder why they aren't taken seriously as a regional contender. If the program is that strong, then win the district seed games and you only need to beat Conner to get to the regional tournament.

your post proclaimed that CCH boys soccer is on par with highland football, highlands football is a great powerhouse but CCH soccer does not produce D1 soccer athletes. Cooper, Scott, Highlands, Louisville collegiate, Trinity, KY country day, ballard have all produced D1 soccer athletes.

When did I ever say that? You are arguing with the wrong person..........must be exhausting.

Rumor has it that Cooper has tried to schedule home and home games with some of the better teams but have not been successful due to the tight field at Cooper. It changes the entire complexity of a game which the better teams do not want to play.

Not sure I can agree with this...

Take a peak at Cooper's schedule, I think they have considerably more away matches, I actually believe they would just as soon play away from home given the chance.

For some reason, there was no foresight when the current configuration was laid out, there is plenty of room to have made it wider... just was not done. The field is what it is, not really seeing this changing, they pretty well have to play with the hand they are dealt.

I think that the schedule is shifting in the right dircetion, and should continue to do so, I also think the soccer being played at Cooper will do the same. Your comments are well taken but might be outdated... if my thinking pans out. So far this year, Cooper is playing a different type of soccer... the stats even support this. They have gotten off to a good start (3-0) and have a +7 goal differential, and it is not 20/13 as in years past... they have scored 9 and only given up 2.

Hello all, I am new to the forum, being a lifelong NKY resident and fan of NKY soccer, it is great to see a forum dedicated to NKY soccer teams. I have followed NKY soccer for a long time, I have gotten to know many of the coaches and former/current players and I think this forum is a great way for all of us to be able to talk about, debate about and share info about the current teams and players!

As far as this thread goes, I know that the Cooper staff are trying very hard to turn that program into a solid program. With that school being so new, I think it is hard for them to schedule tougher downstate or Cincy competition because no one knows who they are. Good teams want to play other good teams, they are not going to waste their time on teams who they think they will blow out. Cooper needs to show that they are a team that are worthy of playing other teams from downstate and then when their coach calls teams to schedule games, maybe he will get a response.

As far as sleeper teams, I think HC was a product of an easy early schedule. I think Dixie are solid, Cooper for sure are a sleeper team. Not too many sleepers, most are either established teams or teams who have a lot of holes. I do think Highlands was not expected to do as well as they are doing since they lost a lot of seniors last season, but they still have a really good program.

Welcome to BGP! Great to have more soccer posters.

In fact, your record in 2013, against, Ryle, Boone, Cooper, and Conner in 2013 was 2-1-1 with a goal differential of 0.

Your combined record against Ohio, Indiana, Louisville, and Lexnigton schools was 1-4-2 with a goal differential of minus 7.

Other than saying you played the games, what is it that sets you so far apart from the rest of NKY?

You're comparing the record of a single team (2013) that was one of the most mediocre in recent history. You could do the same for any school that plays a tough schedule in any sport where they have a down year and say "why are you guys playing these games?" We play them because we want to face the toughest challenge year in and year out that we can on the soccer field. My guess is it's the same for the football, baseball and basketball programs at CCH. The kids want to be challenged and excel. That's what sets us apart.

Actually, I think you could say the same for St. Henry, Highlands or a couple of other schools who play challenging schedules.

There is merit to what you say and I would agree that that there is value to these types of games even in a loss for post season preparation. I only use 2013 as an example because it's the most recent and seems to be more relevant than mentioning a more successful season that doesn't include any current players.
