2014 PIKE COUNTY BOWL

The 2014 Pike County Bowl will be the 30^th installment of the bowl and will be held at three different venues. Belfry, Pikeville, Shelby Valley. Games will be on different dates as well.

 

It should be another excellent year for the Pike County Bowl in 2014 with some good matchups.

 

@ Belfry High School (August 29)

- 6:05 PM Pike County Central vs. Somerset

This will be the first meeting between these two teams that I can remember. Pike County Central comes into the contest at 1-0 with a 14-0 win over visiting Whitley County. Somerset comes in at 0-1 after a 38-7 loss to Pulaski Southwestern.

 

Pike County Central will look to rebound from last year’s loss to Henry Clay 52-14 in the PCB. Somerset will try and rebound from last year’s loss in the PCB to Belfry 37-12 and this past week’s loss to Southwestern 38-7. This will be Somerset’s 2^nd of 3 straight bowl games.

 

 

- 8:30 PM Henry Clay at Belfry

Arguably the best game of the 2014 Pike County Bowl, Lexington Henry Clay makes the long haul up to Belfry to take on the Pirates.

 

This will be both teams season opener. Belfry defeated Somerset 37-12 last season and has been beaten in the PCB since 2005 when they lost to, guess who, yep that’s right, Henry Clay 43-14. Henry Clay and Belfry played each other in 2011 and 2012. Belfry won at Henry Clay in 2011 34-21 while Henry Clay won at Belfry in 2012 40-20.

 

 

@ Shelby Valley High School (August 29)

- 6:05 PM Pairs at Shelby Valley

A rematch from last year’s game in the Pike County Bowl as Shelby Valley would defeat the Greyhounds in a dandy, 22-19. The 2014 game shouldn’t be any different.

 

Paris will be in their second straight bowl game after defeating Bath County 28-16 in the Nicholas County Bluejacket Bowl. This will be Shelby Valley’s season opener.

 

- 8:00 PM Phelps vs. Betsy Layne

Much like the Pairs/Shelby Valley game, this too, will be a rematch from last year’s game in the PCB. Phelps is hoping that this game will go a lot better than last year’s 62-6 beat down by Betsy Layne.

 

This will be Betsy Layne’s season opener while Phelps and Jenkins game ended in a 0-0 tie due to storms.

 

 

@ Pikeville High School (August 30)

- 6:05 PM East Ridge vs. Hurley VA

Another rematch from a game in last year’s PCB, which saw Hurly VA win 36-14. The Warriors have had some bad luck against Hurley in recent years as their last win against the Rebels was back in 2010. Hurley VA will be the first of 4 Virginia teams that East Ridge will play this season.

 

East Ridge was set to open the season on Saturday against Allen Central but as of now no score had been reported.

 

 

- 8:00 PM Hazard at Pikeville

The second best game of the 2014 Pike County Bowl will feature the Bulldogs of Hazard traveling to Pikeville to take on the Panthers.

 

This will be another rematch from last year’s PCB, where Pikeville got the best of Hazard in a high scoring contest, 62-50. This game should be no different from last year’s game.

 

 

Players to Watch:

- Austin Charles (QB Pikeville) Austin threw for 1,589 and 22 TD’s last season while rushing for 750 yards and 6 rushing TD’s.

- Brandon Jones (RB Hazard) Brandon ran for 2,200 yards and 24 TD’s last season.

- Tanner Morgan (QB Hazard) as a Freshmen last season, Tanner threw for 2,346 yards and 25 passing TD’s.

- Austin Hatfield (RB Belfry) Austin ran for 703 yards last season for the Pirates as their #3 running back. Austin will be the go to guy for this year’s Belfry Pirates.

- Castle Hatcher (QB Somerset) Castle threw for 2,136 yards last season as a Sophomore and had 21 passing TD’s.

- Jordan Doan (RB Somerset) Jordan had 626 and 5 TD’s on the ground for the Briar Jumpers last season

- James Clark (RB Paris) James had 865 yards and 15 TD’s on the ground for the Greyhounds last season.

Some other players to watch for Pikeville is there Mr. Everything #13 Cody Estep & #45 RB Daric Pugh who was plagued with injuries last year. Pugh is a beast at RB.

 

Some players to watch for Betsy Layne are QB Peyton Case and RB Lako Daniels.

I agree about the squeeze. The game was called in the 2nd quarter. I'm not sure what time was remaining. It will be a difficult week for both teams.

Yeah this one is a bit of a head scratcher... they didn't even reach Half Time though.

 

PC led 14-0.

 

The game was delayed and they actually made the decision to try and wait it out since Whitley had came so far. I think the game started well after 11:00 and then the storms came again.

 

The PC Coach actually took the high road (something the former coach was foreign to) and basically said "I Refuse to accept a victory for a game that only went a Quarter".

 

If I am a betting man I think you see Whitley forfeit the "Re-scheduled" game.

 

FWIW, had it played out I am thinking Pike Central would have won by a comfortable margin. I do applaud the Coach for trying to do the right thing and showing great sportsmanship...but no way do I make that 3.5 hour drive if I am Whitley to play 2.5 Quarters two days after a district game and 4 days before another District game.

Pike County Central says it is a mistake. As of now it is postponed. I agree with another poster that Whitley County will probably forfeit due to the distance of travel, and due to basically playing 3 games in 8 days.
