Lexington Catholic 2014/2015

Featured Replies

Basketball season for 2014/2015 should provide another exciting year. What should we expect from Lexington Catholic. Remember, please be constructive.

Returns one of the best shooters in the state in Tanner Johnson and solid backcourt ace Jarod Griffin with two other starters. Always a very savy basketball team. The will definitely be in the mix for the regional crown, would not be surprised at all if they would win the region.

Johnson can play. Saw him get 37 or 39 against Doss. He is one of the most under-rated players in the state.

Who did they lose? I know they return almost everyone from a very solid team. I would guess they are the preseason 11th region favorite.

Didn't they lose their big?

The PG is a nice player and Johnson, when on, can drain it from 35'.

Only starter loss was Robert Dence (their big) who signed with Transy.

They'll definitely miss Dence.

I'll try and make a compilation of all of my reports on them over the summer and add them shortly.

Very good shooter. IMO he could be even harder to guard if not for his love of the three. He's a big body kid who should live at the free throw line. They need a big to compete for the regional title. Their backcourt is the best in the region but they seem to always have a big. If they get that they will be a tough out.

Revised an earlier post to include updated information.

We know the Knights will return Tanner Johnson, Jarrod Griffin, and Michael Talbott. Those three alone will mean Lexington Catholic is, well... Lexington Catholic. While I think it's safe to say that the Knights will be reliant on guard play, shooting the basketball, and an up-tempo, pressure defense, just how reliant on those they end up being remains to be seen.

Inside play will be a question mark for the Knights, at least early on. They lost Robert Dence to graduation, and while that may not be a huge name to everyone statewide because he played behind eventual William & Mary signee Jack Whitman for the majority of his career, I thought Dence was one of the more underrated players in the State last season.

In addition to losing Dence, the Knights must also deal with the defection of Sam Letton, who’ll be joining his father at his next coaching stop. Letton is a hoss on the gridiron and a high level recruit at the tight end position, but he was also a guy who could eat up space and use his athleticism on the hardwood. Depth is crucial in the 11th, especially when we’re talking about a team who likes to run and press as much as Catholic.

Walker Boothe will need to develop and make the most of his potential if he wants to step up and fill the void in the middle. Boothe could be capable if he can put the pieces together. If he continues to progress, he might be my pick to take over as starting center.

Another name to watch out for is junior to be Chris Jackson. As a freshman, he was raw in terms of ability, but came a long way over the past season. He’s in the 6’8 range and while I’m not predicting stardom, I could see him being a kid who could do some things to help them win if he keeps progressing.

The Knight’s fortunes next season could turn on whether or not Reese Ryan decides to take to the hardwood next season after his exploits on the gridiron conclude. For Ryan, a quarterback, early enrollment is certainly something that one would think is on the table.

Earlier this summer, I wrote that:

“Footballers such as Ryan,
Donovan Morris,
and/or
JJ Ogbogu
might opt to sit out and put more emphasis on the gridiron. While I don’t expect all of them to sit out, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if a few of the names above don’t play either. Accordingly, depending on who plays and who sits, the Knights’ depth and athleticism 1-10 could be strength or a question mark.”

To date, I have been hearing that Morris is not going to play football and will instead focus on basketball, that JJ Ogbogu had not played much during the AAU season and was expected to be spending the summer focusing primarily on football, and was informed by a poster that the dynamic of the Kyle Bolin/Lexington Catholic situation as far as early enrollment didn’t make it seem likely that Reese Ryan would be doing so either.

Finally, Seth Cambron is a kid who has some skills shooting the basketball, and could be another name to look out for if you’re trying to peg the rotation.

Donovan Morris did in fact decide to play football this year, had two long TD catches in the scrimmage versus Ballard.

Another receiver who will probably help out on the basketball court is 6'5 senior Jordan Hatton. He would definitely help out in the height department.

I wondered if he'd wind up playing. I know plenty of times kids who love the game will say they aren't going to, then when the season comes around, the blood is flowing, excitement in the air and all that, then they wind up out there.

If he was on the fence, I'm glad he's giving it a go instead of taking a chance on missing out and wishing he'd have played later.

Out of Hatton and Jackson, how many JV minutes did each see last season?

I believe that Luke Johnson has transferred to Lafayette also.

I'd heard that Lafayette or LCA were possibilities but hadn't confirmed anything so I didn't want to post until the news broke. Thanks for sharing.

BTW, dont forget your sunscreen as the Knights travel to Hawaii in December to play in a tournament
