I read today the issue with Ky is that they are issued by Circuit Court Clerk and not the state. Homeland security looks at it like 120 different offices are issuing them instead of a state agency, like DMV in other states

 

I will tell from experience after having to get a new license in Michigan and Ohio in the last 3 years the county clerk offices in KY are much more efficient than the DMV's in those two states. Terrible service. Plus a whole new layer of government mess.

Also this may be the crazy libertarian in me. I just don't like the fed giving states orders on their driver license or forcing them to share info on their citizens in this manner.

 

But a Federal ID guru suggested I've never thought about. Have to think about it and do research before I gave my thoughts.

I agree, DMV in Indiana was a slow slow mess!

Maybe we should all just get bar codes tattooed on out wrist or back of our necks and just get rid of all ID's?

Just out of curiosity... has there been a rash of people able to obtain entrance to federal facilities using bad ID's? What prompted these changes?

It's part of the Homeland Security changes that came out several years ago...Ky and a few other states ID's don't meet the criteria. The reason it is coming up now is that the deadline for states to correct their ID process is approaching.

Right... but were all sorts of people entering federal buildings across the country using bad IDs and the situation could have been prevented with an ID with more laser engravings and holograms on it?

I think it has more to do with general security going forward than with anything that may have happened in the past. I spent a few years in Asset Protection and we were always looking ahead at stuff like this hoping to be proactive instead of reactive.

Seems an awful lot like the Feds wading in on a police power they have no business having anyway...

I don't know about that, they aren't mandating a national Id. Just saying the ID's issued by local governments need to meet certain criteria.

 

I'm sure from state to state there was a lot if discrepancies in how ID's were issued.

 

Example: When I first received a Concealed Carry Permit in Indiana, all I needed was the police Chiefs signature and pass a background check with the state police. Permit didn't have a photo or any way to ID me on it. Then I came to Ky and the entire process was different.
