My opinion is as valid as yours. How a private company spends its money is their business - not mine and not your's. That is my opinion. If they broke the law, or I believe that they did so, then I will have a different opinion.

I am not attacking you and neither is anybody else who says that Churchill Downs owners are in the best position to decide how to spend their own money. It is not my business, it is not your business, it is the business of those who own it. That is not personal, it is just a fact. Liberals like to dictate how other people spend their money and that is also a fact.

 

If Churchill Downs wants to turn its property into an amusement park, it still would be none of my business.

More to this donation than just the gambling issue. Churchill obviously will want to have a say in any future horse-racing legislation, tax legislation that might affect the track, improving state roads near the track, Louisville representation on the State Racing Commission, keeping its September racing dates that formerly were Turfway's, on and on.

What part of it is not your business do you not understand? It is literally not your business. You have no money at risk and you are not in position to judge what is in the best interest of Churchill Downs.

 

If Churchill Downs loses millions of dollars because no Republicans support legislation to expand its gambling operations, then so be it. However, if a single Republican votes in favor of such legislation, how will any of us know that the donation was not money well spent? Such is the crooked state of doing business with the government of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

 

Nobody is telling you that you have no right to express your uninformed opinion on the matter. This is the correct place to express opinions, no matter how poorly founded they are. Who knows, you may even be correct in this case. However, nobody but the insiders who run Churchill Downs and possibly a few politicians and their errand boys really knows the motivation for the donation.

 

The real issue is the fact that the state strictly regulates gambling operations and skims the profits therefrom. Gamblers would earn better "rates of return" if the state allowed gaming companies to compete for customers. State government should be focused on creating an attractive business environment that will produce a strong economy and attract good paying jobs to Kentucky. That means not meddling in private business beyond what is necessary to protect the public from criminal activity.

 

Instead, legislators squeeze the profit margins of companies that are already operating in the state and then lean on them to make large campaign donations to avoid punitive actions (regulatons, fines, and more taxes) by the state. Try landing a lucrative engineering contract with the state of Kentucky without making a generous donation to the gubernatorial campaign of the winning candidate.
