Holmes High School Football Field Campaign

This will be awesome for the kids in Covington! The Tom Ellis Athletic Memorial Foundation

A Capital Campaign to Build a Multi-Purpose Outdoor Athletic and Activity Field at Holmes High School

The Proposed Field

The vision for the Tom Ellis Athletic Memorial (TEAM) Foundation is to provide a new, multi-purpose athletic and activity field and focus on the health and development of our youth.

The current Bermuda grass field exceeds 20 years and is functionally obsolete. Through the TEAM Foundation, we hope to upgrade to a synthetic turf that will provide a state-of-the-art field that will make a considerable impact on our youth and our region.

This new proposed athletic complex will not only include the artificial turf field, but also a new track, scoreboard, and provide ongoing maintenance costs.

Good luck to Holmes! Can anyone tell us who Tom Ellis is?

I always liked attending games at Holmes but the field itself is in horrible shape. I think the good folks at Holmes have done all they could to keep it going. It's time for an upgrade.

The Tom Ellis Athletic Memorial (TEAM) Foundation is named for the man known as both "Mr. Bulldog" and "Coach," Tom Ellis, Senior. Mr. Ellis was one of the last in Kentucky to serve simultaneously in four athletic positions—as Head Coach of the football, baseball and basketball teams, and as Athletic Director while at Holmes High School, and accounting for more than 1,100 wins in the process. Before coming to Holmes, Mr. Ellis taught aeronautics, served as principal, and was the football and basketball coach in Bardstown, Kentucky. Mr. Ellis retired from education in 1973 and passed away in 1988 at the age of 83. Having been named coach of the year twice, Mr. Ellis left a profound and lasting impact on the students he taught and coached, and in the communities in which he lived and worked throughout his career.

This would be great for the youth of Covington and Holmes High School. But with declining enrollment, I just don't know about the expense.

Hope they are able to raise enough funds. Would be nice for some of the "heavy hitters" that graduated from Holmes step up and donate.

Enrollment has actually increased over the last 3 years for CIPS District.

I just assumed since Holmes has dropped a couple of divisions the last couple of years their overall enrollment had to have dropped. I wasn't thinking of CIPS enrollment as a whole.

However, I stand corrected 3BREDS28. According to KHSAA collective total numbers for Holmes:

13-14 859

12-13 823

11-12 781

10-11 (site gave me error message)

09-10 789

Probably just out paced by the other schools in their districts I'd say, which makes sense not a lot of new subdivisions popping up in the COV.
