What can we expect at the Kentucky State Track Meet?

Featured Replies

Kentucky high school track season wraps up this weekend with the state finals at UK.

What are your thoughts and predictions? Any surprises on who did or did not qualify? Which teams will come in strong?

Let's start the track chatter here! :walk:

In Class A

Drew Berkemeyer of Brossart had an outstanding regional scoring 36 points for the Mustangs. Set a school record in winning the 300 hurdles, won the long jump, triple jump and third in the 110 hurdles.

The distance battle is always a good one as well. Eric Baugh of Villa put it to NKU recruit Michael Caldwell of Brossart over the weekend in the 1600 and 3200. I expect it to be closer this weekend.

Which teams and which regions have a lot of automatic qualifiers, just based on their performance at regionals?

Class 2A Track and Field State Championships

Here's what you need to know about the upcoming Class 2A Track and Field State Championships.

WHEN: Friday, beginning at 4:30 p.m. with six field events for each gender and the girls' 3,200 relay. First boys' track event is the 3,200 relay at 4:55. The last of 24 total field events, the boys' 1,600 relay, is at 8:55 p.m. A 25th track event, the girls' wheelchair 100-meter race, starts at 5:52.

WHERE: University of Kentucky Outdoor Track Complex, Lexington.

COMPETITORS: The top two regional finishers in each event and 10 at-large berths with the next-best marks from around the state.

ENTRIES/RESULTS: khsaa.org/sports/spring/track/

DEFENDING BOYS' TEAM CHAMPION: Lexington Catholic (highest-finishing local regional team: Highlands fourth). Defending girls' team champion: Louisville Central (highest-finishing local regional team: Highlands tied for seventh).

LOCAL INDIVIDUAL DEFENDING STATE CHAMPIONS: Ryan Greene (Highlands) boys' 400 meters, John Michael Griffith (Highlands) boys' 3,200.

OTHERS TO WATCH: The Highlands boys' and girls' 3,200 relay teams are looking for state titles after both squads finished runner-up last year. The boys are listed first in the pre-meet performance listings; the girls sixth. The Mason County boys' 800 relay team and the Royals' Nick Robinson in the open 1,600, also are looking to improve runner-up finishes.

Highlands' Molly Mearns and Sydney Ossege are threats in the girls' 1,600 after Mearns placed third last year and Ossege fifth. Mearns was fifth in the 3,200. Teammate Hannah Schenck is a contender in two girls' events after a fourth-place finish last season in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump.

In the boys' 3,200, Highlands' Griffith will need to hold off teammate Ethan Shuley (fourth last year) and Covington Catholic's Brian Menke (fifth). Shuley is top-ranked in the 1,600 and 3,200.

Other candidates for individual titles with top-ranked pre-meet performance listings include Jake Erpenbeck of CovCath in both the 100 and 200 meters, and Highlands' Alex Veneman in the 400 (he's ranked second in the 200).

WHAT TO EXPECT: It should be close between an improved Covington Catholic squad and Highlands among local boys' teams as they take aim at defending champion LexCath, which out-pointed last year's runner-up Paducah Tilghman by 27 points.

Paducah Tilghman is more robust this year with 23 athletes on the performance list, compared to 11 for LexCath, and should be considered a favorite. CovCath has 22 boys; Highlands 16.

At the Region 4 meet, champion CovCath and runner-up Highlands finished ahead of fourth-place LexCath.

Highlands' girls, one point out of fifth last year at state and 21 from third, need to make up 76 points on defending champion Central and 38.5 on runner-up North Oldham.

Good luck to all of the participants!

I'll be heading there tomorrow morning. Suggestions on parking?

Lots of people faster than me...... and much younger for starters. Looking forward to seeing how SK performs. I doubt they win it but this is uncharted ground for them.

Wanted to congratulate Warren Central's boys 4x100 and 4x200 teams on their victories today.

The Karas girl from Collins was amazing.

Congrats to Highlands boys! AA state champs!
