I'm not a fan because I think it cuts out some of the kids who may need sports most.

 

I'm sure that a kid who'll be a star will find a coach to sponsor them, but I'm not really sure about the fringe kid who sits on the bench until his senior year, still accepts a role as a 5th or 6th man even then, and uses sports as a springboard to bigger things.

 

I know of kids who were the 6th or 7th man in high school who went on to play in college (granted, at a small level, but still).

 

You have to wonder how the fee might effect some kids like this.

Does anybody have a mandatory pay to play or fundraise to play? Let's say $200 bucks.

 

Pay it. Fundraise it. A little of of both. Just get it done.

 

I believe that this is illegal and a direct violation of the Red Book.

You mean fundraising fees? All program implements that? Sell media ads, candy, lift- a -thon, gift cards etc. And if a player(s) do not sell the maximum limit, then they are responsible to pay the difference. Of course some programs always have that SUPERSTAR player(s) and their parents don't think they have to sell anything.
