Is there such a thing as a good loss?

Featured Replies

Setting in the stands watching PC win another game on Tuesday, I heard some people talking and looking ahead to the Mason Co. game on Friday. I heard some saying that a loss to Mason would be good because then if we meet them in the region we would have a better chance. I personally disagree that a loss is "good" for any team. It's not like PC is undefeated. I believe that coach Biggs has prepared the team for the tour. and they know how to step up. Go cats and let get to Rupp. What do the wisemen of BGP think? :ylsuper:

I never hope for a loss, but sometimes it can refocus the team.."bring them down to earth" so to say if they have a long winning streak. It also can teach the team never to take anyone lightly.....anyone can lose on any given night.JMO.

As a coach I can say that a certain kind of defeat can be beneficial. I am a soccer coach at MMI. Last fall we visited Lafayette to play their JV team. Only JV, I know, but still a huge game for my team. Everyone expected MMI to get hammered.

We held Lafayette to 0-0 at the half and eventually only lost 2-1. The guys felt like they had achieved something major by showing everyone (their coaches included) that they could hang with a big team.

The biggest payoff was in the classroom where they worked hard to get through the day so that they could get to soccer practice quicker.

Yeah - there are such things as a good loss. Like Three Lions pointed out - when a team that isnt expected to give a big team a run for thier money - and just fall short...that could be considered a good loss.

When a team has a tough loss and uses it to rechannel their energy and enthusiam ...and come out in the next game focused and ready - that could be considered a good loss.

You never hope to lose or accept losing as a positive but I think if you happen to lose to a team that you may match up with later or if you lose a game right before you enter a tough tournament it can benefit you. Like mentioned in the earlier post... it re-focuses you and gives you a new start.

If you're a true competitor a loss is NEVER a good thing.

No loss is a good loss, but positive aspects can be taken from the contest. When a team loses, it's a direct result of either the other team being better or not playing consistent, for the duration of the game or a combination.

Identifying weaknesses, areas to improve, individual player advancement, team evaluation, game plan execution, passing, defense, etc....are all areas that require constant evaluation, in a win or loss.

If you're a true competitor a loss is NEVER a good thing.

Not true - if you are a TRUE competitor you learn from your defeats! No team or individual is perfect, therefore everyone will taste defeat sooner or later. You should accept that defeat will come in time and be prepared to learn from the situation.

Recently I covered a game for our local newspaper where a sophomore starter had a chance to help her team to a signature win if she could sink two charity shots. Even scoring one would probably have taken the game into OT. She missed them both and blamed herself for the loss.

I went over and consoled her and told her to learn from that situation. The next time she saw me she thanked me for my words and realised that she had been worrying too much about what the free throws actually meant than just concentrating on the shots themselves. She learned from the defeat. They lost the game 62-61 and the charity shots were taken with 1.2 seconds left in the game.

Remember back in '96 when the cats went on a tear after losing to U Mass? They went undefeated upto the finals of the SEC Tourny and then lost to Mississippi State, then went on to win the NCAA Championship. I (and this is only my opinion) felt that that game served two purposes. (1) It rekindled the competitive spirit in a team that had been cruzing through the season and refocused their attention toward the ultimate goal. (2) As I recall Antwone Walker sat out most of the game because of rumored differences between he and Pitino. This showed the team that one man isn't the whole team but each individual is one element that together makes a team.

Maybe I'm wrong but having a regular season of easy wins or having a player that feels he's bigger than the team can hurt you come tourny time.
