One of Kentucky's great rivalries....Shelby County at Oldham Co. 1-31-14

Featured Replies

Shelby County has struggled a little bit over the past few years, but Oldham Co - Shelby Co still ranks, in my opinion, as one of the great rivalries in Northcentral KY.

Great names like Danny Shearer, Jeff Griffin, Donta Smith, Travis Liedtke, Eric Liedtke, Curt Robertson, Tim Griffin, and others for Oldham County.....Mike Casey, Charles Hurt, A. J. Slaughter, and Terry Davis for Shelby County...and so many others. It's a long, long tradition that goes back a long, long way.

Today, there's North Oldham and South Oldham to battle with Oldham County inside the county, and Shelby is challenged by Collins in Shelby County. So perhaps the rivalry isn't what it used to be. But for those like me - who grew up in the 70s, watching in jam-packed gyms when the two squads played - it will always be a special game.

Shelby County travels to Oldham County this week in a girl/boy doubleheader. Who wins and why? Jason Crouch has his Rockets on fire, as they've won 5 of their last 6. Oldham is 13-5 and beginning to figure out new coach Coy Zerhusen's up-tempo style. Who wins and why?

New names to know on the boys' teams: Austin Perkins, Austin Wills, Hayden Hawes, and Conner Hicks for OC all average in double figures. Shelby counters with Malik Manica, Keenan Cochran, and James Gordon.

Both games broadcast on Pegasus Sports at The Pegasus Sports Network - PSN, beginning with the pregame at 5:30 pm ET.

I agree with Shelby and Oldham being one of Kentucky's greatest rivalries. I've seen many great games between these two teams. I haven't seen Oldham play this year but I'm sure they're solid as always. Shelby is getting better, but are they good enough to beat the Colonels?

I went to school in the 8th region and i agree,,My thoughts, OC will win

Unless Shelby County has vastly improved from when I saw them earlier, they will struggle to win this one vs. Oldham.

I saw Shelby last Friday at North Oldham. Not sure how much they have improved since the beginning of the year, but I know they played an absolutely brutal schedule early on, with games against Iroquois, South Oldham, Manual, Collins, Bullitt East, etc. They've won five of their last six and looked competitive in rallying from a 13 point 3rd quarter deficit to win by 9 at North.

Oldham looks to be a better shooting team, and it remains to be seen how Shelby will handle the Oldham pressure defense. Oldham's also difficult to guard, with four starters averaging in double figures, and three starters who are superb three-point shooters. Oldham brings in some quality subs off the bench as well. The question for Oldham is whether they will play 32 full minutes of basketball, which has been their biggest shortcoming to date. This, I believe, is somewhat the product of continuing to get "in synch" with new coach Coy Zerhusen's system, which is radically different from Coach Holland's former philosophy.

Both games could be decent games, but Oldham should be favored to win both.
