Thorobreds win 3, move to .500 on the year

While many teams were facing canceled games, Larry Kendall's Harrison County squad played & won three times last week. The Breds started on Tuesday night by earning perhaps their best win of the season, a 50-37 triumph at George Rogers Clark. D.J. Jenkins led the winners with 20 points as Harrison held GRC to 3 points in both the 2nd & 4th quarters. On Thursday the Breds traveled to Carlisle and saw a double-digit lead shrink to 2 points in the 2nd half, but successful free throw shooting down the stretch enabled a 52-37 over Nicholas County. The next night it took 23 points from Trenton Thompson, including a game-winning putback, to defeat Bourbon County 47-45. Harrison County's season record now stands at an even 9-9.

Montgomery gets scare but pulls away to remain undefeated

The 10th's top ranked team, and state's #9 ranked team, played just one game again this past week & it was a thriller. 12th Region stalwart West Jessamine (13-4) battled with Jason Holland's Indians on Saturday night in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at East Jessamine & led most of the way. The Colts were ahead 62-58 when Xavier Piersawl got a basket after a steal with 11 seconds left. After a West Jessamine free throw with 5 seconds to go pushed the margin back out to 3 points, senior guard Blake Thomas drained a clutch trey, forcing overtime. Despite star guard Bryan Wallace & his 22 points being on the bench due to fouling out in regulation, MoCo outscored the Colts 8-3 in the extra frame to come away with a 71-66 win. Piersawl added 19 points & Darius Jones 18 points for the Indians, who improved to 16-0 on the year. After a couple of games it should win (at Bath, at Bourbon), Montgomery County hosts Wayne County on Saturday--a showdown between Kentucky's only two unbeaten teams.

Camels win a pair

Campbell County entered last week having lost 2 of its last 3 contests, but Aric Russell's team won both of its outings. On Tuesday night the Camels upended 9th Region foe Conner 78-71 in Alexandria, led by 27 points from Corey Holbrook & 24 points from Dre Jackson. Campbell entertained Amelia (OH) on Saturday & trailed the majority of the game, but a strong 4th quarter by Jackson fueled a comeback win. The junior guard scored 11 points in the final 8 minutes & tallied a team-high 21 for the game. Center Matt Wilson scored 19 & Holbrook added 15.

Brossart takes care of business in Class "A"

Not surprisingly, Bishop Brossart had no difficulty in advancing to the 10th Region Class "A" title game, pounding Paris 66-32 in Wednesday night's semi-finals at NKU's Regents Hall. Senior forward Alex Trentman again led the 'Stangs, scoring 24 points & pulling down 10 rebounds. Trentman was 9-13 from the floor & 6-9 from the charity stripe. Senior center Drew Burns was also effective, finishing with 13 points on 6-8 FG shooting. Mike Code's team is still waiting to see who it will play for the championship, as inclement weather has delayed the lower-bracket semi-final matchup between Robertson County & St. Patrick.

Class "A" faces scheduling changes

After playing games as planned on Monday & Wednesday, the Class "A" schedule endured a couple of different changes due to weather concerns. Thursday night's lower-bracket semi-final between Robertson County & St. Patrick has now been moved to Monday night & the venue for that game will be Bishop Brossart High School. The winner will face the Mustangs on Tuesday night, but the championship will be played at NKU's Regents Hall.

Front court fuels Royals to 2-0 week

Mason County entertained a pair of 16th Region teams last week, starting with struggling West Carter on Tuesday. The Royals coasted to a 74-36 victory behind a team-high 18 points (9-10 FG's) & 5 rebounds from senior center Shawn Johnson. Junior forwards Jake O'Mara & Dorian Henry both added 11 points. Friday night proved a more trying task with Buddy Biggs bringing his Ashland Tomcats to The Fieldhouse. The Royals came out sluggish, trailing 23-13 in the 2nd quarter, but outscored the visitors 11-1 just prior to intermission. Chris O'Hearn's bunch then clamped down defensively, keeping Ashland from scoring in the first 4 minutes of the 3rd quarter & pulled away with a 56-44 win. Mason's front line again did the bulk of the damage, with Johnson scoring 15 points while pulling down 16 boards. O'Mara added 12 points & Henry chipped in with 10.

GRC drops 2 games

Scoring woes, which plagued Scott Humphrey's Cardinals all of last season, have become somewhat problematic again this year. In a Tuesday night home loss to Harrison County (50-37), the Cards started out strong, leading the Breds 19-16 after the opening 8 minutes. But the 2nd quarter brought the feeling of deja vu, as GRC put up only 3 points & found itself trailing by 13 at halftime. They cut the deficit to 6 points entering the 4th quarter, but again GRC managed only 3 points in the final frame. Junior guard Damion King was the only Clark player to register double figures, finishing with 14. The Cardinals managed a few more points on Saturday, but fell 69-54 to South Laurel--a team they had beaten earlier in the year.

Paris handles Polar Bears in Class "A" Quarterfinals

Monday night's Class "A" Quarterfinal between Paris & Bracken County turned into a glorified free throw shooting contest. The 'Hounds & Bears put up a combined 77 shots from the charity stripe, but Terrence Brooks' team proved more capable, connecting on 25-38 en route to a 76-67 win. With sophomore forward Koebe Garrard battling foul problems, Paris got 20 points from junior Cameron Downey and 12 from sophomore point guard James Clark. Chad Persinger's Polar Bears struggled with free throws the entire game, hitting only 21 of their 39 attempts. Freshman guard Austin Crawford scored a game-high 23 points, but was 11-21 from the free throw line. Senior guard Nate Haight played well, finishing with 19 points. The win for Paris advanced them to the semis, where they fell 66-32 to heavy favorite Bishop Brossart.

Scott falls twice more

Brad Carr's Eagles, playing without injured junior standout Blake Schneider, continue to struggle. On Tuesday night against Boone County, the Eagles found themselves trailing by 10 at the half, but scored the first 11 points of the 3rd quarter to take a 1 point lead. It remained tight until the 4th quarter, when the Rebels pulled away for a 66-54 win. It was basically the same story on Friday as Scott visited Brandon Hatton & Dixie Heights. The Eagles hung tough most of the way, but the Colonels also had a strong 4th quarter & won 68-50. Scott continues to get solid play from senior big man Kameron Crim & freshman guard Jake Ohmer, but Carr's squad needs a healthy Schneider to add to the win column.

Great work as always

Mustang has on his website that Jake Jennings is out indefinitely with a broken hand. Hope it is a short setback as I enjoy watching Brossart at full strength. Good luck Mustangs.

Hate to hear this. When and how did it happen?

Damion King continues to try and carry the Cards. He scored 30 points in their game yesterday against South Laurel. No other cardinal was in double figures.

King has been the most surprising player in the Region IMO.

King has been the most surprising player in the Region IMO.

His defense has always been there, but this year has really stepped up his offensive game.
