If my quick calculations are correct, Peyton Woods is averaging 26.4 points on the season so far. Not too shabby, and perhaps the best average in the state if not close to it. Sounds like a player for sure. :thumb:

It's one of the best scoring averages in the state and it still isn't the best in the 12th Region. That distinction belongs to Ronnie Carson of East Jessamine. Those two teams meet on Friday.

Woods only averages in high thirty's on threes's but he shoots a lot of them, but he will pass the ball. Carson has one thing on his mind when he gets the ball "shoot". That is why Wayne is undefeated.

To say that's why Wayne is undefeated (relative to East) is not a fair statement. Wayne has way, way more talent than East and that's the biggest reason for the difference, not one of these players being more selfish than the other. BOTH of these guys put up a LOT of shots. You simply can't average upper 20's PPG and not. Carson had a game early in the season where he shot 31 times!! As for Woods, he's attempted at least upper teens FG's in 6 out of their 14 games, including 2 games with over 20 attempts.

Looking at stats from their last 5 games: Carson averaging 1.8 more FG attempts per game than Woods; Carson shooting 57% & Woods at 43% (Woods 34% from deep). Given the amount of talent around Carson relative to around Woods, I would argue that there should be more of a disparity in attempts per game. While assists aren't on that site, just based on stats I've seen to go along with the few games I've seen him play, Id say Carson has a nice APG number as well. When his attitude is right, he can dominate a game more than any other player in the region, period - and in multiple ways.

From the East Jessamine/Wayne County thread:

Little known Ronnie Carson fact:

Last night at Rockcastle County, Ronnie Carson broke the single season assist record. That record was previously held by Ronnie Carson who broke that record last year as a sophomore. That record was previously held by Ronnie Carson who set that record as a freshman.

Ronnie Carson is currently averaging 5 assists a game. Lost in his scoring ability is his ability to set his teammates up for baskets. He will likely break that record next year as a senior and will finish as the all-time assist leader at East Jessamine.

You've obviously never seen him play.

Carson is shooting 57%???? That's extremely impressive for a guard/wing. Wow.

Keep in mind that I was just comparing the two players' last 5 games listed on the scoreboard.

Gotcha. Either way, 57% in multiple games is still pretty impressive.

I'm curious as to why you would use just the last five games as your sample. Why not the whole season?

Over the course of a season as opponents learn other teams' strengths & weaknesses, it typically becomes more difficult for a player averaging high numbers to maintain them because the opposition will overplay them. It appears that Carson and Woods both have scored big numbers early & late so I don't see why the selective sampling.

Using the whole season to date (as thus far available) both are shooting over 50% from the field and over 78% from the free throw line. Carson is shooting 9 FT per game compared to Woods 7.5, both high numbers (and good for their teams since they shoot a high percentage from the line).

Woods is shooting over 40% from deep whereas Carson is under 30% but he doesn't shoot that many so that's not a huge deal. Carson is bringing down 8+ boards a game compared to Woods 5+.

Both excellent players, but I think most fans are more concerned about the final result of the game, not which player has the gaudiest stats.

Right. And when someone makes an inaccurate statement about Carson then people will provide information proving otherwise. Just as I am sure you would do the same about Peyton.

I'm not speaking for First but I am guessing that the 5 game sample was used to show the tear Ronnie has been on recently and East has picked up some big wins in those 5 games as well. I wouldn't look too much into it.

Exactly. Keep in mind this whole thing was started by disparaging comments about Carson as compared to Woods. I didn't do the whole season bc, quite frankly, I didn't want to take that much time to calculate it! As you said, as the season progresses it's even more relevant. So, I picked a big enough sample to be meaningful, and chose to use the 5 most recent games. No agenda and no other reason, just using numbers to back up my position.

And I agree with you that MOST fans are more concerned about wins than gaudy stats. You'll notice that I was focusing on FG attempts per game, not PPG, to prove my point that Carson isn't a ball hog. I wasn't celebrating his individual stats!

Point taken (it wasn't me that made disparaging remarks about Carson). I find it scintillating that the 12th Region has two such fine players and further that we have several teams climbing into the top 20 or 25.

It speaks well of our teams, coaches and players and the competition. For all of them to excel as they thus far have will only serve to make all better and hopefully whomever survives the Region come March, able to go far in the State Tournament bracket.

Friday night's East Jessamine vs. Wayne County game should be extremely competitive and entertaining.
