Highlands 48 Newport 36

Featured Replies

I tell you what, if teams look past Newport this year, they may leave with a loss. They play hard and keep coming at you. Birds controlled most of the way, but Newport did get it down to 7 early in the 4th qtr. Newport hits a 3 at the end to make it a 12 point game.

I was impressed with Newport's drive. They never stop. I also recognized improvement from many of their players. If I'm not mistaken, they are still a young team. I know they start 1 JR, 3 sophs and an 8th grader. They will be a team you don't want to play in a year or two. Nice, quick athletes.

For HHS, I do think they got caught looking a little ahead to Notre Dame on Friday. But that takes nothing away from Newport. HHS started sluggish and never really looked like they were going to pick it up. However, when Newport hit a 3 in the 4th to take to a 7 point lead, you could see the energy pick up a little on the Birds side.

Highlands was led by Haley Coffey with 24 and Lydia Graves with 8. (all unofficial)

HHS has Notre Dame on Friday at HHS. Another tough matchup for the Birds with ND's size and length.

I heard ND was down at the half to Holmes 37-15, maybe they were looking past Holmes.

Doubtful

This game was like watching paint dry. Birds looked really sluggish, but that may have been more a result of being out of school and not practicing rather than looking ahead to NDA. Some of the girls need to learn that even if a few shots do not fall, you cannot become passive. Thought Newport played pretty well except for a few stretches here and there. Probably helps that Coach Vories has been there for a few years now and he does a good job of keeping them calm throughout the game.

On a side note, did assistant coach Bert change his name to Walz?

Congrats to HHS and little Coff drop for putting up 24. Love hearing the Lady Cats are improving and have that don't quit mentality. Always makes girls basketball more interesting and better to watch when there's parity. :thumb:

Congrats to the Birds. Sounds like Coffey is an outstanding basketball player as well as a softball player.
