Are officials too concerned with hand checks......

Featured Replies

to call other things they are now missing??

Case in point. We did the Bellevue/Dayton Girls game on Monday night. Right before halftime, a Dayton player shoves a Bellevue player. Plain as day, two handed shove, blatant as can be. Official right there in front of it. No call. Bellevue coach gets t'ed up for calling it out. Biggest no-call I've ever seen.

If you look at the video it's at the 1:19:36 mark.

Are they too concerned with the hand checks that they are not calling such things?? BTW 58 fouls called by our stat software.

Thoughts??

No. Not related. Officials miss calls - even blatantly. It doesn't mean they were only looking for a handcheck. Maybe the official looked away at another player. 3 officials is supposed to help minimize that but...sometimes calls get missed.

And if she was shoved, wouldn't that qualify as a hand check? We (I) have not had any problems at all with the fouls in any of our games this year. They miss some, but they always have and always will. I don't think it has to so with the hand check rule. Just my opinion.

I don't have a problem with the hand checking, but I don't know how you defend the driving offensive player without a foul being called. I've seen many fouls called when the offensive player initiates the contact but the foul is called on the defender. This is happening all the time on dribble drives to the basket. This would be my primary offense until they change how they are calling this example. I would win the game from the free throw line.

I've seen 5 games so far & not once have I seen a charge called even with perfect defensive position!! It seems they are allowing major battling down low & just a few shooting fouls in lane but hand checks & blocks called all night out front!! Makes for a very slow game!!

I have to disagree with the charge calls. There were 4 called last night on South Oldham ( vs. Gallatin game) . Just depends on the referee - because similar move made by a Gallatin player was not called a charge. IDK- refs just need to be consistent. It is hard enough to adapt to the new rules but even harder if not consistently done throughout & on both ends. And not to mention we have had one game where only 1 of the 3 ref's called all the fouls- how it that possible? Have the rules changed on that as well?

I also agree with PTB - that it is impossible to defend the drive without some contact.

There is no rule that says it's only a foul if the defender initiates the contact. A good offensive player will initiate contact if he sees he has his defender in a bad position.

If the defender is in legal guarding position then it will not be a foul.

Let me be clear that I am NOT commenting on your particular play.

With that most fans and coaches cannot tell if it's a charge/block because they NEVER watch the defender. They always watch the ball. An official watches the defender to see if it's a block/charge.

When a dribbler is advancing the ball, she does not have to go the rim or anywhere in particular or with purpose, but she only needs to veer into any defender who is moving and it will be a defensive foul. We had several called in our last game in which the defender was MOVING BACKWARDS to stay away from the dribbler - and it was still called a foul. A clue, just a simple clue as to what is really a foul and what is not, is what needs to be consistently called. This is simply not happening at the present time. This a different season, and right now we have a very different game compared to what it has been in recent years. Good, bad or indifferent, it is what it is and we will deal with it.

I'll say this again. We have played 5 games. We have played in two different regions. That's 15 officials and 2 regions.

We have not had any issues other than a call or two (which I consider completely normal). Heck, I'm not sure we've reached the double bonus in all our halves played. And when we have, it has been at the very end of halves.

If you move your feet, keep your hands off the hips or from pulling jersey and guard as a team (step in gaps, sag, ect), from what I've seen, you won't have any issues. Again, there may be a call or two that you question, but that's no different than any other year.

And yes, we pressure the ball and get after you we are small, we have to to survive.

I was really concerned with all the talk of enforcing the rule. But from what I've seen so far in our games, if you follow the rules (that we all know), there won't be all those fouls called.

I watched the video. I guess I'm questioning your premise. What would hand checking have to do with missing a call that was not a hand-checking foul?

Is the official that is right in front of the shove more concerned with a possible hand check than to call the blatant shove that happened right in front of him.

Since a hand check involves the use of hands I'm struggling to see how the official might be so concerned with that call vs a shove.

Quite simply, this is just a really bad missed call with no explanation as to how it was missed. I'm sure they'll be the first to tell you that.

I can certainly see why the coach got mad. I can also certainly see where he left them no room but to T him up.
