Breds' Sutkamp on record-setting pace

Jack Sutkamp of the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds has been around the game of football all of his life. It makes sense to him that he would be around the football a lot when he plays the sport.

That can explain the inside linebacker’s team-leading 179 tackles, a total that is putting the heat on the school’s 18-year-old single-season record of 206. Sutkamp needs 28 more stops to break Steve Smith’s mark set in 1995.

The senior’s individual pursuit, however, is taking a back seat to the team-wide search for a repeat KHSAA state championship and third crown in four years for the five-time title-winning Thoroughbreds.

Definitely a chip off the old Sutkamp block.

I remember watching Sutkamp back in the 80's run over EVERYBODY!! Congrats to the younger generation.

I played w/ Steve Smith. Steve was about 170 lbs if he was holding a 25lb plate. He, however, was a silent animal w/ INCREDIBLE instincts. He had 25 tackles against LexCath when we beat them at their place. He was the soul to a very good defense.

Good luck to Jack and the Breds tonight. If someone is going to break Steve's record, I couldn't think of a more deserving player.

Exactly.....he deffinatly keeps that family tradition going. I grew up with his dad and uncle when they played for Bellevue and I was at Beechwood. Great players and love seeing JJack having such a great season.

Saw him last week. Great player. Hope he does well tonight.

With his 16 total tackles, 10 solo.........the NewCath inside linebacker is 12 tackles shy of breaking the Breds single season mark of 206 set by Steve Smith in 1995.

Season totals.....121 solo 74 assists 195 total.
