Bad defense and turnovers leads to a ton of offense in this one for both teams. Belfry does just enough to pull out the win.

Ugly win... but defense came alive in 4th and Belfry just gave it to the manchild Hatfield to ice it

Belfry 51 carries for 461 yards, 532 total yards

 

Southwestern over 300 yards rushing and another 30 passing

Austin Hatfield 20 carries for 165 yds 2TD

Justin Johnson 10 carries for 130 yds

Strange game, Belfry ran all over them but kept finding ways to keep them in the game.

 

On one Belfry drive the FB, who is a workhorse and never fumbles, had the ball taken away from him in a scrum and the kid from SW headed the other direction with it. That led to a TD.

 

On another instance, Stigal for SW was stopped for a loss and slung down by one of Belfry's defensive ends, a freshman. Belfry's kids thought he was down and turned away but Stigal did the "stumblebum" and squirted out of the backfield and took it to the house.

 

Sounded like Belfry jumped out to a very quick 10-0 lead and then took a mental lapse on defense. At times they are playing 4 or 5 freshmen on defense and this will be a good lesson for them. Those guys only had 2 games experience coming into this game and the mental part of this game is just as important as the physical if not more. You simply have to give 100% every down, nobody is going to look at the name on your chest and roll over for you. And you have to play until the whistle blows, every play, every day.

Pirates also had a TD called back (as it should be as the penalty was clearly correct) that led to an empty point possession on a FG that missed by a yard or so short

 

Pirate punter had his first "bad" punt this season that led to a short field that Southwestern converted to a TD on a play that Belfry's defense missed a couple tackles and seemingly stopped pursuing the football on the sideline.

 

Irritating game as a fan as Belfry were a couple bounces and a couple mental lapses from a running clock, yet had to come back for the win instead. Yet.. they needed to lay an egg like this on defense and see a team who never quit like Southwestern. Definitely will get a lot more out of this game than if they simply blew the Warriors out. Probably works for the better.

 

Might be the only time Hatfield is stripped all season.
