what are their numbers like? Had heard last year there was some frustration with the middle school coaches about the number of kids that actually saw meaningful time on the field. Was curious to know if they lost many, if any kids.

Middle School team last year was not very good, and is even worse this year. It's fallen a long way in the last two years.

They lost a few kids , maybe a few more this year.

Frosh and 7th/8th grade teams are some of the most unmotivated players I've ever seen. Please understand I have a dog in the 7th/8th grade. I think the Frosh have picked up some from last year, but the 8th grade team is without a player leader and is lacking any heart. The seventh grade has a few, but nobody vocal enough to get the boys going. Coaches are teaching, but don't know if the players are listening.

 

I do year around sports, but this is the only season that really matters to me and it hurts. The 8th grade participation is down and it shows. They are a 4 athletes away from keeping things close (you can't hide anybody at this level like you could in peewee). The 9th grade has some talented players and I don't want to see any walk away, but either you love football or you don't.

 

I'm a transplant and am becoming a Purple and Gold believer under the current coach. I just wish the kids were as passionate as their parents, mine included.

The players are not the problem with CCMS, and Freshman teems.

Unfortunately in this day and age, not only do you have to be a good coach but you have to play Dr. Phil to see what makes each of these kids tick. It's so easy to sit in the stands and question coaches decisions but they are the ones putting the time in at practice and watching films. Give Coach Lickert time to get the right personnel in place,he has already done wonders at the varsity level and he is now being able to focus at the younger levels. Do freshman coaches, players and parents want to win at the Freshmen level? Absolutely but coach Lickerts focus is for those kids are to learn his system and be prepared for when he gets them not wins. There is talent at each level the key is to keep them hungry, focused and teach teach teach. JMO

Also must add that Coach Lickerts 1st year here, his main focus was getting the varsity turned around, and rightfully so. Now that he has done that he has turned more focus to the youth and middle school. Give it time and be patient, you can't build a feeder program over night. He's got the program going in the right direction, just keep supporting them and it will happen.

Can you please explain why Coach Lickert should not focus any attention on the middle school level? To me as a varsity coach who has had a successful program since coming to CCHS he needs to give some attention to them. If those kids are not being developed properly it is just going to be harder at the high school level to develop them.

Tig, you have to remember this is only Coach Lickerts 3rd season at the Helm. In his first season his focus was on the varsity. They split the 7th and 8th grade that year because the 7th grade had 54 kids tryout and they played in the small school division. They took some lumps but they were playing 7th and 8th teams. 8th grade won the large school division championship. His second year the 8th grade coach moved up to take over the freshman job and they had 2 new coaches for the 7th grade team and 8th grade team. This year the 8th grade coach from last year moved up to freshman as Defensive coordinator so the middle school has new coaches once again. At the youth league he has made changes where the teams are playing other teams from outside their own league which has worked out to our benefit. He also has a new director for the youth league that works his tail off for those kids. I will say from where the youth league and middle school league was several years ago BL (Before Lickert) and AL (After Lickert) it is better off. The middle school and freshmen are struggling so far but I can tell you Coach Lickert is always looking to improve the feeder programs and keep the boys hungry and wanting to play. Keep rooting the boys on, be patient and have faith in Coach Lickert. People are going to complain no matter if your successful or not it takes time to build an elite program from top to bottom. I wish he had a magic wand to wave and fix everything but he doesnt and it takes hard work and sometimes trial and error. It will work out, give it time. Old wise man once said, "Those that say it cannot be done, should not interrupt those that are doing it."
