Way Back When: Estill County 14 Breathitt County 8 (1989)

Got the idea from gchs_uk9..

I don't exactly remember if it was 88 or 89 but that was the last time that the Engineers defeated the Bobcats....Game was played in the KRMC Honey Bowl @ Breathitt County. All I know about this game was that my friend's uncle was the MVP...a Breathitt County player picked up a fumble and made it to the 20 yard line, about to score when my friend's uncle took off from around the 50 yard line and caught the Breathitt player before he made it to the End Zone.

How far did Estill go in the playoffs that year?

I have no idea. That was around the time I was hatched. The following year they went like 9-2.

Then clean the yolk off and get the answer!

I will next time I see my friend's uncle. Hoover Niece was Estill's Coach. I think that was during Stanley Niece's career at Estill.

No playoffs for Estill in either '88 or '89. Estill was in a Class AAA district with Franklin County, Jessamine County, Lincoln County, Scott County, Western Hills and Woodford County during that time period.

That was back a few years.

So true. Interesting to go back and look at the old alignments. You get a really good idea of the schools/counties that have grown and those that have shrunk. Hard to believe Estill was AAA in a 4-class system.

Yes it is most of the schools like that are losing students.

When looking at the classes it appears most of the "mountain" schools have fallen back a class. Lots of those schools in 2A and 3A that used to be larger. Says a lot about the changing demographics and loss of economics options in eastern Kentucky over the last 25 years.
