Sweet 16 Opener 16th vs 1st

Featured Replies

Not a bad draw for the 16th.

16th favorites Morgan County along with Russell, Elliott County, Fairview, Ashland and Boyd County

1st region favorites are Heath, Paducah Tilghman, Calloway, Graves

Morgan Co. beat Heath last year in a thriller in Paintsville Tourney.

1st Region definitely not quite as strong the last couple years. 16th could very well win a round this year.

Here in the 1st, we're saying the same thing.

Understandably!! :thumb:

What has happened to Marshall Co? Why aren't they being mentioned? I don't think the 16th could have beaten anyone in the first round except for the 15th.

The 1st Region appears to be better this year than at any time since 2002, when Paducah Tilghman reached the state finals.

The field is wide open. Graves County was the favorite, but they dismissed their point guard from the team a couple of weeks ago and there are some chemistry issues there. Marshall County beat Graves last week and is a top contender, as are Tilghman and Heath.

Calloway County looks to be coming together after a shaky first half and the next wave of teams, Mayfield and St. Mary, are capable of beating the favorites on a given night.

Is Stieg still the coach at Tilghman? I worked at Tilghman when Orlandus Hill, Brian Hamilton and Ches Gibson were 11th Graders. Chumbler was still there then. Does Graves still slow it down to almost a crawl?

Looks like the 16th is up for grabs as well, but with no clear-cut favorite. Morgan Co. has only 1 loss in region play; that to Elliott County; Elliott and Fairview have already played 3 times; both have lost to Boyd County who arguably has the top player in the region in Owens. The top 4 or 5 will be beating each other the rest of the way.

Most likely, regardless of the teams, the 1st representative would most likely be a several point favorite.

This is Stieg's fourth year as the head coach. Tilghman's talent level has been down somewhat, but this team is capable of winning the region.

As for Graves ... yeah, they still slow it down. Some things never change.

Obviously, when you see some of the other teams in the region, it gives them the best chance to win, but BORRRRRINGGGG!!!!
