Well here is some details,

 

HHS pitcher has been thowing well but must have had an off day. I doubt Ryle has had 15 hits in any one game this year.

 

 

RYLE 11, HIGHLANDS 1 – Three players drove in two runs in the Raiders’ win.

 

Seventh-grade shortstop Maclai Branson plated one on a fielder’s choice in the first and went doubled home one on a fifth-inning double, followed by another RBI two-bagger by freshman catcher McKenzi Dickerson.

 

Senior second baseman McKell Oliverio smacked run-scoring singles in the first and second innings, and junior left fielder Katelyn Stephens singled in a run in the first and lifted a sacrifice fly in the second.

Yes you have beat the teams ranked 5-9 but have been beating pretty bad vs the top 4, and had a real tough time against good teams this weekend. I would say just looking at scores Highlands has played worse against the top teams than anyone in the top 10. So what gives how come you guys can beat like teams but are coming up that short against better team, is it the youth which almost every team has to deal with or what.

There are hundreds of cliches or sayings where so many teams have had this same delima over the years! At this point I will have to go with "Just can't get over the hump!" Luckily for these young ladies the season is not over yet and they still have the opportunity to fight through the adversity and come together and make a run in the tournament! Or It could be a quick end to a pretty decent year! They definately need that breakthrough win where someone comes up with a big hit for a walk off win or something to happen to get over that hump! For the record its a pretty good HUMP Too there is a reason the big 4 are the 4 teams to beat in the 9th Region! Ryle is a very good team and they came out hitting and took care of business early! HHS has to figure it out or they will be stuck in the same place for several years.

I have one piece of advice for all hitters in NKY, and that's do not let the umps get you in a slump by making you swing at bad pitches, I tell my daughter I would rather you walk back to the dug out with the bat in your hand than swing at bad pitches. I am not saying close pitches that miss by a couple of inches I am talking about balls that are clearly out of the stike zone. I think we all see those, its hard enough in this game to hit good pitches sometimes much less bad pitches, so just tell the ump he sucks and go take a seat!!

You know I like this. As much as I hate called third strikes, I have seen, on the baseball side, several non strikes called for third strikes or kids hitting the ball weakly because of really bad strike zones.

I guess on a side note you better make sure your coach is on the same page bc some coaches can't stand called thrid stikes and you could find yourself in trouble real quick.

This is what I meant yesterday forewarning the Birds not to take themselves too seriously yet. Ryle had lost three games to local teams the past week. You can't count them out or the Oliverio's.

It really hasn't been pitching for the other team that does the birds in. it's usually defense. I wasn't there last night and obviously Crupper pitched well and the birds didn't hit. That will happen against good pitchers from time to time. But in other games against good pitching, they have hit well enough to win. It's all the minor mistakes they make on defense that differentiates them from the others IMO. So as we discuss the future, remember there are no seniors on the team and they start 4 freshman and 2 sophomores. This is the coaches first year cleaning things up and they will continue to get better. I'm sure they will continue to polish the defense. It's repetitions, instruction and discipline they need. That doesn't happen overnight on in one year even! As far as other teams pitchers, IMO, I don't think they worry too much about that. They are good and hard to beat, but even in some of the losses the birds have had this year against those pitchers, it wasn't the other team's pitcher that did them in. Defense was the culprit!

Two good games against Conner (I know you say Conner doesn't score runs, but that would be the same for everyone they play). We acutally lost on a walk off 2 run blooper with two outs in the last inning in the first game.

Smith appears to have our number, but we have actully hit the ball decent with not much to show for it. In fact, in one of our losses to them, I believe we out hit them! (according to the paper).

 

The birds will all get stronger as they get older. They all play competitive summer ball and they all have the desire to win. They also have a strong middle school group coming up that will supply depth and create competition for spots. Something they have never had. I truly believe it's just a matter of time. maybe i'm wrong!

I hope you are right, but most teams, year after year say they are young. With girls, they seem to lose a little interest after their Junior years, and seem to get ready for college.

 

 

Wishing Highlands the best, but you need to be realistic with what you are trying to accomplish. The coaches are doing a great job and will continue the girls progressing.

I agree History, if you read the article from last night Ryle's starting SS that knocked in a couple is only a 7th grader. In my 6 years there have only been a couple senior lead teams, most schools play more underclassman than upperclassman. That does not mean HHS can't over come these teams but for the most part they are in the same boat as most schools so they need to find out a way to beat the better teams.

I am sure they will but IMO this is the hardest thing to do in softball. It's easier to become a better hitter or pitcher than it is to become better on defense.

 

HHS will get better for sure and I am not betting against them to be one of the top 3 or 4 teams down the road but I still need to see it before I believe it. Now knowing HHS they will probably have a good chance at having a player transfer in to help. HHS is improved this year but I would say it has more to do with the transfer of the pitcher than any other thing.
