With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, IMHO, no one team stands out as the clear cut dominate team to win out in the 9th Region tourney. Now the top 4, Boone Co, Conner, Notre Dame, & Ryle are without a doubt the front runners, and one of these teams will not even make it to the tourney since 3 of them are all in the same district. All four of these teams have by far the best pitching in the region, however when playing some of the teams in the next tier (top 5-9), the 5-9 teams have showed on more than one occasion they are able to hang with the "big dogs".

 

The next tier of teams that include: Dixie, Highlands, Holy Cross, NewCath, & St. Henry, in my opinion, are more than capable of beating any one of the top 4, however do they have what it takes to win two more after that? While some of these teams do have have quality pitching, mainly St. Henry's Noelle Butts, others will have to rely on hitting and most importantly "DEFENSE" to pull off a "trifecta".

 

The Top 4 IMO have the advantage mainly because of pitching, but also, they play a top notch schedule including many weekend triangles/tourneys which will prepare them for this time of the season.

Dates for Play

1) District tournament play shall begin not later than Monday of the week on the KHSAA Calendar for district tournaments. Permission may be obtained from the KHSAA office to start later than that date only in the event of facility conflicts. Tournaments may begin on the weekend prior if the schools concur and it alleviates facility conflicts.

 

2) Region tournament play shall begin not later than Tuesday of the week on the KHSAA Calendar for region tournaments. Permission may be obtained from the KHSAA office to start later than that date only in the event of facility conflicts.

 

3) All tournaments shall be held on or as near the dates indicated on the Memorandum Calendar as local conditions permit. Any exceptions shall be approved by the Commissioner.

 

The Region meeting shall be held on Sunday afternoon immediately following the district tournaments not prior to 2:00 local time in the school designated as the host. These meetings may be held earlier by mutual agreement of all teams, but not prior to the completion of all district tournament games.

 

The pairings for the region tournament shall be made in accordance to the following procedure. In a region tournament with participants from four districts, the district winners will draw for positions 1, 3, 5 and 7 in a standard eight-team bracket. Each corresponding runner-up team will draw for a position in the opposite bracket.

 

Is it possible for a winner and corresponding runner-up in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball or volleyball district tournament to meet before the final region game? No, because they are to be placed in opposite brackets.

I would say if the region tourney was played 5 times this year we would have at least 4 different winners and at least once it would be from a team outside of that top 4 we keep talking about.

The problem for Highlands in this scenario is the chance of drawing Conner as their first round game, if that happens they still have to go through some combo of NDA/ Ryle to win it. Best case for the Birds has them and St Henry on the same side of the bracket which would place Conner there as well. For the Birds to win it they need NCC/Dixie to pull an upset and then get past Conner/ St. Henry. For this to happen the bracket would have to look like

Does anybody want to talk softball on here anymore? Region tourney is weeks away yet no one is posting. ..be proud of your team brag on them a little...pick on me or better yet lawnboy...do something damnit

Highlands is on track for a winning record this year and a good shot at making regionals. Has some great young players who will keep up the winning ways for the foreseeable future. Need to get over the hump of beating the top teams in the region.

HC is in the same boat as HHS expect they don't have any good wins only 1 bad lose and that was with out their starting pitcher.

 

You could make an argument that they have played better against the top 4 teams than anyone losing all games by 1 or 2 runs expect the 11-3 to NDA and I would say that game was much closer than the score.

 

That being said they haven't beat a 5-9's either so who knows what to think.

 

HC finds ways to lose games...some of their problems are real easy fixes others not so much.

IMHO, yes. However, Highlands, Holy Cross, Dixie, & NewCath would not be that far behind......it would be one giant "crap-shoot".

Probably St Henry..HHS possibly bc they are a little more solid all the way around...maybe HC bc of me!

 

Dixie is the wild card for me bc I just haven't seen or read enough about them.
