OK.....I'm only 4 years into this HS baseball thing, but I was thinking.

 

If football has 1a, 2a, 3a........and so on....classifications, why doesn't baseball?

 

I think I remember an All A tourny, but that may have been soccer.......

 

Anyone around when they had any talks on this one? Wondering what the thinking is......

There have been plenty of cases in baseball of smaller teams doing well like LCA, Beechwood, etc. but the most of the time the bigger schools are a bit more successful on the average. I'd say there is a bit more parity in baseball only because it takes on really good pitcher and you can balance out things pretty evenly even if its between a far superior team and an inferior one. Football classifications are bit more required because that is more of a "team" sport and if you have more talent working as a team then you will be more successful. With more players to choose from in big schools, that typically translates out well into finding a good amount of talent. Baseball is a bit more of an "individual" sport. Sure you win and lose as a team but the impact of each individual is felt much more. That can be bad or good but that especially comes down to the pitching position. Thus I can see why it hasn't really been brought up too much before.

I believe that there are more unclassified sports for State Competition than there are Classified. Basketball is always the one that seemed more due for Classification than Baseball. That is truly a team sport that benefits greatly from larger enrollment to pull from.

Only three high school sports are classified in Kentucky.

 

Football.

 

Cross-country.

 

Track and field.

 

I think that's it.
