Let's talk about 3rd, who are some of the girls that stood out to you.

Amy Kozerski, senior-Holy Cross, Amy has played 3rd and outfield over the last 5 years. She has improved every year and with a little luck could be one of those break through players this year.

This group has to be lead by soph Hannah Dossett from Gallatin County. She plays summer ball for the 18U Louisville sluggers who are one of the top travel clubs in the south and midwest. She will be one of the few from the area to receive a D1 sholly to play softball in college.

Shelby Graybill from Highlands. Was team offensive MVP last 2 seasons and this being her freshman year will be her 4th year of playing varsity. She is going into her 6th year of travel ball having played for the Cincy Doom, Lady Lasers Red and the last 3 season with Cincy Static 98.

If working hard during the offseason is any indication Highlands will have 2 good options at Third and i believe both are Freshmen! Obviously Shelby Graybill (plays summer ball for Static) returns along with Brennah Dutcher (plays summer ball for EMR) both have been working hard during offseason and both have good bats!

Sure seems that more kids from HHS are playing summer ball than at other schools, any idea why that is?

Maybe because often summer ball costs alot, and with traveling and such, some families don't have the income to make this kind of financial commitment.

Not a knock on those than can and do,but summer ball takes commitment of both money and time.

Good call, I am sure that is one of the top reasons. Softball is no more expensive than soccer or volleyball or basketball AAU and there seems to a whole lot of the kids doing those sports either club wise or AAU. I know my family has had to make great sacrifices for our kid to do it. That doesn't mean all families should or can do it just what our family decided to do

I think/hope you will see more and more young ladies from across NKY in the future playing higher levels of softball soon. I know where I went to high school they started playing fastpitch in 1991. If I am not mistaken some schools in NKY have been doing it less than 10 years?

This will be NewCath's 8th season of fastpitch.

I think it really just comes down to a choice of lifestyle that your family will live for the time your DD is in TB...my wife and I don't have much money, but we manage...I have many friends that have a big family vacation each summer, or regular trips to "the lake", or any other in a list of 100,000 things to spend your money on....we made the choice that each summer we'd have 8 mini vacations on a shoestring budget in our van with 230,000+ miles, caravaning to various far-flung parts of the country, with the same bunch of girls, parents and grand parents, and sweat in the dust, pack our own food, sit in the hotel parking lot to drink beer and tell lies at night and watch our DD grow up working hard at a skill, playing a fun, exciting game that in the end may or may not get a little return on the money spent in the form of a scholarship, but will most certainly teach her (and us) life lessons that can't have a price tag put on 'em.

I know this is off topic, and by no way am I demeaning your sentiment, but it can be done without a lot of green.

That is all, back to your regularly scheduled broadcast.

I agree 100% and I can personally verify the parking lot beer stories!! I can't tell you how many times we would pack a grill and went to the store and spent 100 bucks on food and feed two teams. We ate better spent less money and had a whole lot more fun than going to a Bw's and yelling at each other to talk or waiting for ever to get the bill right.

Might be true but that coaching staff has a month or two involved and knows a thing or 2 as well. When you keep succeeding, coaching has a lot to do with it.

I think there are several reasons Highlands has so many young ladies playing summer tournament softball the least of which is the financial coomitment! The main reason is because the girls that were playing summer ball was having a positive experience during the offseason (summer) which here in Northern Kentucky is the best time to be playing softball! There is something to be said about playing more games getting more at bats more opportunity to learn the game and the life lessons it teaches! I think 2 years ago they had 3 girls playing summer Ball, last summer the number was 8, next summer i know there is 10 and maybe more playing on competitive teams and will play in 8-10 tournaments playing at least 3 games and hopefully 5 or 6 games if they do good so that is between 24 and 60 more games these young ladies will be playing against quality competition in an exciting atmosphere!

As far as financial and time commitment my daughters team is about $600 per girl and that covers all 8 tournaments, umpires, uniforms! We will travel to Columbus and Findlay Ohio which does require overnight stays so there is another couple hundred dollars, but most are inside the 275 loop! Although most parks do not allow you to bring food and drinks in we typically set up an ez up and the girls picnic in parking lot! It is a time commitment but I can not think of a better way to spend my weekends over the summer seeing the fellowship and friendship these girls develop at these tournaments is truly priceless!

It is an exciting time at Highlands High school the Lady Bluebirds program is up and coming building on the foundation the previous staff (BTW they have a beautiful healthy little girl) built! The new coaching staff has set excpectations on that foundation and I think will be playing an exciting tournament style of ball!

It is great I have said it before HHS is on the right track.

The Financial commentment is real and the higher level you play the more expensive it is. We do our best to keep cost down but it is easier for some families than others. Our dollar amount is substantially higher than yours with that being said we are very lucky, the guy that runs are org donates 100k every year and also puts money into the org through other softball related things that he does.

If you play in some of the top tourneys aroound the country where there could upwards of 100 plus colleges coaches you may have to pay up to $1500 or more to play in that single tourney. The price is high but they line up to get in.
