I agree. If a team has an outstanding cheering section at home, that can make a huge difference in the atomsphere of the team and the turnout of the game. :ylsuper:

Home court does help some teams. Some players seem to player harder for the home crowd than they would at away games. In certain instances the home court can help just by name alone. An example would be Memorial Gymnasium in Hazard. During Hazards prime teams often feared playing Hazard in Memorial for the simple reason not many teams won there. ( the fans also had fears of a heart attack from walking up that mountain because they had to park in Jackson )

 

On the flip sides some teams that are perennial powers tend to feed off of the negative response from crowds. The teams that seem to be hated the most seem like they love playing in front of hostile crowds.

I think that the home court is a 5 to 10 point advantage. Wouldn't most teams prefer to play at home? At some schools the clock-keeper can be worth 3 or 4 points alone.

AGREED!!! Home Court is HUGE!!! court is the same size & goals are all 10 feet but everything else sways towards the home team.

2. familiar goals and gym

3. more fans (environment vary but are 99% in favor of home teams on any given night)

4. clock keeper & other personnel (how many home team fans have been put in jail by their sheriff?) They may leave the gym by referee request but very few go to jail.

The rims are always the same size, but the court can vary sometimes. For example I believe Lexington Catholic has a college size floor, which gives them a slight home court edge.

thats true. I know people said that jackson city use to use lee's college floor & it was college size. the added feet would make a difference over the course of a game.

 

Nets also make a difference. running teams have small nets so that the balls go through easy. Teams that want to slow things down have big thick new nets that seem like will hold the balls in them.

We have always hated playing Mason county at the fieldhaus because of the size,6000 seats ,our gym at Fleming does not have all that open space around the basket.

It's not too much of an advantage when teams who are from the same region are playing one another, but if teams travel to another region, then it becomes a big disadvantage. One reason for this is that coaches rate their own region's officials for the post season tournament assignments.....and most referees aren't going to upset a coach from their own region, who in return may give them a low rating.

Coaches and their teams may not get hit too hard when out-of-region, but they're not going to get any judgement calls that could have gone either way, the toss up calls.....the home team will get those. And the host usually can play more than usual aggressive press defense, and not worry too much about being whistled for many fouls.

 

You are absolutely correct. I've seen our local teams get " Homered" when they were on the road, and I've seen our local teams get favorable calls when teams from other regions come here.

Driving for miles on crooked roads before you play a game is a definante disadvantage. Tournament games should be played on a neutral court. Give both teams a fair chance.
