Players of the Week

Owsley County Izaiah Allen, Joey Grove, Noah Shelby, Letcher County Central's Josh Owens, Cody Gregory, Knott County Central Camron Justice, Lee County's Blake Gabbard, Estill County's Trenton Jenkins, Powell county's Trey Marcum

MVP(s) Goes too: Owsley County's Izaiah Allen and Joey Grove (Yes both) Here's why, both helped the Owls go into 2 hostile environments and leave with 2 district wins to go 2-0 in district play. Against Powell, Izaiah Allen had 27, Joey Grove added 17 points. Against Lee both Allen and Grove had 21 points. Noah Shelby added 17.

Injury Bug

Breathitt County has some football players that are out nursing some injuries from football but will return to the Bobcats here shortly.

Games of the Week

Owsley County def. Powell County 65-63, Owls basically went into Stanton and took it to the Pirates. Owsley at one time in the second half, had a 10 point lead.

Hazard def. Breathitt County 49-29. I figured this one would have been closer than what it was but the Dawgs come out with a huge region win.

Here are some other region scores from this past week:

Cordia 68 - Jackson City 62

Cordia 68 - Leslie Coutny 62

Lee County 53 - Jenkins 39

Wolfe County 59 - Leslie County 56

Good Efforts of the Week

Owsley County - Joey Grove & Izaiah Allen combined had half of Owsley's points (35 of 65) against Powell County.

Owsley County - Joey Grove, Izaiah Allen, Noah Shelby combined for 54 of Owsley's 74 points against Lee County

Powell County - Trey Marcum had 22 points against Owsley County

Letcher County Central - Josh Owens and Cody Gregory combined of 40 of Letcher Central's 73 points against Powell County

Estill County - Trenton Jenkins lead the Engineers with 14 points as they won by 35 over the visiting Jackson City Tigers

Knott County Central - Camron Justice lead the Patriots with 24 points, Evan Hall added 19 as the Patriots routed the Powell County Pirates 77-44.

I agree that Hazard is probably #1 in the region. They're a talented team wth size and depth. The 6'5 Hudson, who transferred from Cordia, has really helped the Bulldogs.

It's sad that they don't play Perry Central during the season but I suppose both sides have their reasons. I was told by a person from one of the schools that would be in a position to know that they may resume scheduling next year.

The 56th district, which I assume we both reside, is as about as even as I've seen it in many years. I don't know much about Estill County but hear they have a good team. The Engineers may have a slight advantage when we get to March due to the district tournament being held at their school.

I think Breathitt is still a top 5 team in the region. Once we get past the 14th region's top 4 or 5, I don't think any other teams are in the mix to win the region. The rest are all playing for district titles and a trip to the region. That's about as good as it's going to get for them.

The Hazard win over Breathitt County seemed impressive from this outsider's perspective.

That was a very impressive win. I was surprised by the outcome, thought it would have been much much closer. I do feel that once Breathitt get's all their players back from football injuries they will be fine, their injuries are more like tiredness but I believe they will be good to go shortly.

I don't think Hazard has all their players either. Olinger was one of their top players as a sophomore but decided to not play last year. Now he's a senior and just getting through the football season. When he gets back into basketball mode the Bulldogs will be even better.

They beat us (Owsley) badly in the opening game of the season, and we have to play them again in the near future, and then again in January in the All A. Whew!!!

It's going to take a great effort IMO to keep them winning the region. I think Knott and Perry are the only two with a shot at doing it.

The player Breathitt needs in a huge way is the big Fraley kid. But he quit the team. That forces Chaney to have to play center and he's not as effective as Fraley.

Yep. Unless something changes Fraley won't be on the Breathitt team.

Good job.
