Close Games

Why do so many people think it is their God given right to see close games? While I'm at it where did we come up with the idea that it's not right that the same teams win a lot.

Because it's supposed to be the best teams in each class. When "great" teams play each other, it is usually a close game. I expect blowouts in the opening rounds because you have #1 seeds playing #4 seeds who barely made the playoffs. But it's the FINALS, I expect to see close games.

But hasn't there always been this kind of problem. Sure there are exceptions but prior to 6 classes, weren't there a lot of blowouts in the Title games?

Just from my experience with my team (Boyle) the Rebels won in blowouts every year in their 5 straight run. The HHS game in '03 was close for 3 quarters but the 4th quarter was a bursting of the dam that left any doubt erased.

HHS was doing that to many teams before in the 4 class system as well.

Here's a list of all Championship Games and there were quite a few blowouts in those title games.

Looking back, prior to 6 classes there was not a 3A title game within 2 TD's since 1997.

All I'm stating is that when the "best" teams in each class lineup I expect a great, close football game. Do you not?

Amen!! Amen!! and Amen!!!!

It's a game, and the object of the game is to score more points than your opponent, unless of course you are golfing lol.

If the same team wins again and again, changing classes or whatever isn't going to make that team any worse. So what if you win by 50 points or 1 point. Simply enjoy the game as it's played and stop blaming teams that are successful, that is why the game is played...to win.

But the best teams are not always in a bracket that allows them to meet in the finals. True in any sport. NCAA basketball rarely pits the two best teams in the finals. It tries to design a system that will get there but rarely makes it.

Same with KHSAA football only worse. Regional design means that the best teams might square off in the semi-finals or even Regional Finals along the way.

I guess my point is, it's always been this way and always been a "crap shoot" on what you get in any finals.

Do you feel the same in professional sports? Look through the history of the Super Bowl, there really haven't been t a lot of barn burners, or the World Series, how many game 7's have there been in the World Series or NBA etc.

How many NCAA Championship games were close?

It's just the nature of the beast, some games will be close, some won't be. It's just how it happens.

"Best" = what are to be considered the best. I do understand that it does not always occur. Read between the lines.

Last Super Bowl to have a 14+ winning margin was in 2003, Bucs v. Raiders. When you get into basketball and baseball you are comparing apples to oranges. I'm getting the feeling that every one of you are coming in here with guns blazing and completely overlooking what I am stating.

These games are called FINALS for a reason. They are SUPPOSED to be the best two teams. Hell, any matchup of two ranked teams in any college sport should be a great game. There is a reason these teams make it to where they are, because they have defeated other good/great teams along the way.

Did you all not expect to see a good game between UL and UK last year in the Final Four? If you didn't and let's say UL won by 25+ would you not feel a little bit let down?

Nope, I wouldn't of felt let down because of the score.

I don't go to games hoping it's close and the winner only wins by 1 point. I go to games to root for my team and hope they win. If they win by 1 point or if they win by 50 points it doesn't matter to me. I take a little of that back, if my team wins by 50 i enjoy it more than if they only win by 1 because I'd rather they completely dominate their opponent.

Now I only watched 2 games at WKU this weekend, the NCC and the Cooper games, both were close. Both were within 1 score in the last 10 mins of the game. I would of rather seen Cooper blowout Bowling green but it didn't happen, so I guess I was more upset with a close game than a blowout by Cooper

I go to a lot of games for the matchup, as well as following "my" school. I've been to T-X at Papa Johns, haven't attended either. I would've went to Ballard-Scott Co. last week had I not sat through a four hour final. I've been to the Sweet 16 when "my" team wasn't even playing in it! Went to the Elliott Co-Holmes game a few years back, went when Christian Co beat Eastern and Rowan to win state.

Forgive me for being a SPORTS fan and traveling to watch great matchups, and expect to see a great game. Maybe I shouldn't have such high expectations.

Edit: Wanted to include that I simply stay away from the games I think are going to be blow outs. I could honestly care less if T wins 6A for the next 100 years, I will just not go watch them play in the 6A title game.

There is nothing wrong with hoping for a nail biter etc. when you are simply there to watch a game and have no rooting interest in any of the 2 teams involved. Nothing wrong with that at all. But you also have to remember that it is sports and there really isn't parody in High School sports and very seldom in College sports.

Schools do not get their athletes all the same ways, they also don't live in the same type of enviroments socially and economically as all the rest of the schools in the state. There are many many many variables that go into account when it comes to school teams. some schools may not be able to afford proper equipment etc. Coaches are different, just too many reasons why you will never see parody in high school athletics.

Like I said, there is nothing wrong with rooting for a close game, but it is never that easy. Especially if you have a dominating program that no other school in that same class can compete with.

Short of seeding the playoffs you are not guaranteed the two top teams meet in the finals, and really not even then. You are State Champions by advancing and winning five games, not by necessary beating the best opponent in the last game.
