Graybeard Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Sheldon Clark put on a nice tournament this Saturday. The teams in attendance were: host Sheldon Clark, Lawrence Co., Prestonsburg, Wayne Co., Perry Co. Central, Greenbrier East (WV) and Ashland. Ashland’s Matcats did pretty good – placing 3rd behind Wayne Co. (1st place) and Sheldon Clark (2nd place). Several of Ashland’s seniors continue to struggle with a nasty flu-bug. I heard a lot of teams complaining of the same thing – I guess it is the season for it. Cody Zacur took 1st place in 171 Andrew Dillon took 2nd place in 215 We had several other wrestlers finish in 3rd place. Cody Zacur beat Sheldon Clark’s Kelly (in their last match of the day) by a pin in the third period. These two have met once before at the Bourbon Bash where Kelly won. This will be a fun math-up to watch in the coming weeks. It was a good day of wrestling. I’m attaching a few photos that I took – I hope that you enjoy them.
Graybeard Posted January 15, 2006 Author Posted January 15, 2006 This one is from Cody’s match with Lawrence County’s 171. Zacur got the pin in the first period.
Graybeard Posted January 15, 2006 Author Posted January 15, 2006 Andrew won this match with Prestonsburg's 215. Dillon is a possible contender for the Region 8 title.
Graybeard Posted January 15, 2006 Author Posted January 15, 2006 I think this was one of my best shots of the day. Jimmy placed 3rd. He is wrestling Prestonsburg's 140.
Graybeard Posted January 15, 2006 Author Posted January 15, 2006 Blake didn’t finish the day due to a bout with the flu. He is a good wrestler; I hope that he recovers soon. This match is with Lawrence Co.
Graybeard Posted January 15, 2006 Author Posted January 15, 2006 I think this shot is from his match with Lawrence Co. Trace placed 3rd.
Graybeard Posted January 15, 2006 Author Posted January 15, 2006 This shot is from Joe's match with the Lawrence Co. wrestler. Joe placed 3rd.
region8dad Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 How did Alfred Collins do? What weight? How did any other of the Perry County wrestlers do? Did Dials lose any? How did the Joey Sanders vs. Runnels match at 152 go? Is Trace Stafford staying at 135? Did Murton lose any? j/k  Ashland's team looks tough this year. Ashland may have 2 or 3 region champs this year, and maybe one state champ.

I'm trying to learn the names - I'll do the best I can, here goes: Alfred Collins - I need some more clues (weight class??). Perry Co. has a good team. They were mixed together with Greenbrier East because they both were missing a lot of weight classes. I know their 189 pounder came in 3rd place and I have a shot of him I'll post later. Dials (160) SC - took 1st place I think Joey Sanders (152) of Wayne won by forfit against Ashland. Blake Runnels was too sick to wrestle by that time. Trace Stafford is staying at 135 to my knowledge. Murton didn't wrestle - nursing an injury I was told. I hope this helps a little, R8Dad.
Graybeard Posted January 16, 2006 Author Posted January 16, 2006 This shot is from the 189 pound match between Perry Co. and Ashland. I don’t know the Perry Co. wrestler’s name, but he looked to be an upper classman and very strong – barrel chest and big arms. He looks like he spends a lot of time in the weight room. Ashland’s 189 is Evan Holbrook a 14 year old freshman. Evan didn’t look to stand a chance in this match – but he went the whole 3 periods, only losing on points 5 to 6. Not too bad for a youngster. What a fun match to watch as the crowd got into cheering for the underdog.
csabo17 Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 This was Travis Pennington, he is a Jr. and this was his first ever match. Not bad for a kid who has been on the mat exactly 4 days prior to this match. I would of loved to had him a few years earlier to train. Dials didnt place at 160 unless he got third but i saw him take 3 loses. Jones from PCC Sanders from wayne, and i cant remember who else beat him, but im pretty sure he started the day 0-3. Sanders wrestled up this weekend, and said hes still not sure where he will be come region time. He and Jones had a good match with some questionable calls from a young ref. Not placing the blame anywhere but come region time if Sanders goes 160 he and Jones may have a great match. Alfred Collins 130 Took second to Howard, All my boys have been practicing since tuesday and are in no way wrestling shape yet. I felt like Howard was the better wrestler in this match though, and Alfred will have to work hard the rest of the year to match up come region time. All in all I took 4 wrestlers, Charles Turner went 3-2 and lost 3rd by points. Alfred cCollins 4-1 2nd place. Time Jones 4-1 2nd place. Travis Pennington 3-2 3rd place. Chris Spurlock PCC Wrestling
Graybeard Posted January 16, 2006 Author Posted January 16, 2006 Thanks for the information csabo17. Your wrestlers were very good Saturday – especially considering the short time that you have been working together. I think your team will make a big impact at our regional tournament. Good luck, Graybeard
csabo17 Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Thanks for the kind words, they have a long way to go, but i have faith come region time they will be ready. Chris Spurlock PCC Wrestling
