October 19, 201214 yr Who all is a fan? I am, but my knowledge is rudimentary. Was hoping some people could point me in the right direction to new artists. Stuff I'm a fan of: Trombone Shorty, the jazz played on Treme, jazz played on Homeland, earlier Esperanza Spalding. Open to any suggestions. But if you know something along those lines I'd really appreciate it. Especially the N'Awlins stuff.
October 19, 201214 yr There are some styles I like - including the aforementioned Trombone Shorty. I mainly like what is called either "soul jazz" or "jazz funk." RS had an article a few months ago about it. Charles Earland , Black Talk - YouTube

I've got a few of his on vinyl...and absolutely LOVE it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBSN7WOPkQ0
October 19, 201214 yr I've never jumped into jazz with both feet...but I've got some favorites that'd be worth looking into if you're trying to get started. I don't know how many would be news to you, but I'll mention for the sake of it: St. Germain: He's a decent new(ish) electronic/acid/nu jazz artist.

The Dave Brubeck Quartet/Time Out.My personal favorite Jazz album Coltrane live at Birdland/Search on youtube John Coltrane/Afro-Blue... Dave Brubeck , Maynard Ferguson , Jerry Mulligan +1 on Dave Brubeck...
October 19, 201214 yr Marco Benevento: He's an experimental piano/jazz phenom. Believe it or not, years and years ago, I was in a childrens piano competition against this dude (he DESTROYED me). I saw him live in Lousiville a few years ago. Incredible. He also does some cool cover songs using his own jazz interpretations. Here's an awesome My Morning Jacket cover he did at the Louisville show I saw:
October 19, 201214 yr Agreed with the sentiment on Dave Brubeck. In my opinion, his music is the most easily accessible jazz that has ever been recorded. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faJE92phKzI
October 19, 201214 yr Stanley Clarke Great Bass Player...I have a copy of his self titled album,I'm going give this one a spin here in a few.:thumb:
October 19, 201214 yr Charles Mingus: He was a bass player what kind of came out of the big band era, and created his own big band-esque jazz sound, which later have ways to the likes of Coltrane (Mingus liked his band's music to be SAX HEAVY) and Miles Davis. If you want to hear a lot of busy instrument voices all at once, listen to Mingus.
October 19, 201214 yr Miles Davis: Just go ahead and get yourself Kind Of Blue. It'll be worth it. It's what cool sounds like.
October 19, 201214 yr John Coltrane: Okay...Trane is what cool sounds like too... If you take the time to sit down, turn off the tv, put down any books or magazines and just listen, you can hear his saxophone have a conversation with you.
October 19, 201214 yr CWB,Do you have a copy of Miles Davis/Bitches Brew? I may pick up a reissue but I would rather have a first pressing.
October 19, 201214 yr CWB,Do you have a copy of Miles Davis/Bitches Brew? I may pick up a reissue but I would rather have a first pressing. I've got Kind Of Blue and In A Silent Way (both re-pressed), but I don't have a copy of Bitches Brew right now. I have them all on CD though. ...and this thread has me listening to Thelonious at work at the moment.
