Bullitt East senior basketball player Rusty Troutman committed to Bellarmine University, picking the NCAA Division II Knights over at least one Division I school.

Troutman, who is 6 feet 5 and 195 pounds, is a strong shooter who is expected to play on the wing for the Knights. He committed to Bellarmine coach Scott Davenport during an unofficial visit to the campus Sunday with his parents.

Troutman said in a Tuesday phone interview that he chose the Knights, who have recruited him since his sophomore year, over a scholarship offer from Division I Gardner-Webb, as well as multiple other D-II offers. He said he also had significant interest from Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State.

“Bellarmine is a great fit,” Troutman said. “It’s close to home. Everybody can come watch me play, and I feel like I fit in there perfectly. And they’re successful.”

Troutman averaged 17.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists as a junior for the Chargers, the two-time defending Sixth Region champions. He has started since his freshman year and helped Bullitt East to 81 victories through three seasons, his coach, Troy Barr, said.

“He’s just a winner,” Barr said. “He’ll do whatever it takes to win, whether it’s score points, rebound, pass, dribble, take charges or dive on the floor for a loose ball. So many kids nowadays do one or two things on the floor, and Rusty does everything. He’s extremely versatile.”

Troutman is one of four Bullitt East seniors Barr expects to play in college, joining Derek Willis (committed to Kentucky), Trey Rakes and Elliott Young.
