Newport Central Catholic 8 Highlands 2 36th Semi-Finals

Featured Replies

Breds and Birds battle it out in Newport for the 4th time this season and the Breds win for the 4th time in a "VERY" entertaining game to sat the least.

The NewCath 1st starts out with a single from Sr.Mehgan Millard, she moves over to 2nd on a groundout of Fr.Casey Kohls, and scores on single off the bat of Fr. Michaela Ware, who tasks 2nd on the throw. Sr. Rachel Hardesty groundsout to 8th grader Haley Coffey at short, but Ware thinks thats 3 out and starts walking to the 3rd base dugout, in the mist of this she is able to reach 3rd safely. The next batter Sr. Paige Immegart "bloops" one over Coffey's head at short and Ware scores. The next batter Fr. Kristin Schreiber reaches on a dropped ball at 1st and So. Taylor Burkart "laces" an RBI single between 3rd and short. Highlands gets a 2 out double off the bat of lone Sr. Brooke Hollingsworth but she is stranded. The NewCath 2nd Kohls reaches on an error but is stranded. The Highlands 2nd sees the Bluebirds load the bases for the 1st of 3 times in the 1st 5 innings. So. Carly Hebel gets a 1 out double off NewCath starter Fr. Sarah Neace, Fr. Payton Leighty groundsout, then Coffey is hit by pitch, Cheryl Horner draws a walk, but NewCath 2nd baseman Casey Kohls makes a nice back-handed grab of a shot from Fr. Whitney Quillen to get the force to end the inning. NewCath goes 1-2-3 in the 3rd. Highlands Ashley Grosser reaches on a error in the in their half of the 3rd, but Hollingsworth pops out to short, *th grader Shelby Graybill pops out to 3rd, and So. Kendell Turner groundsout. The Breds go down again 1-2-3 in the 4th, the 3rd out of the inning off a "LONG DRIVE" to deep right-center off the bat of Zimmerman that from out of nowhere Ashley Grosser makes an "unbelievable catch".

Now things get "real controversial" in the Birds half of inning #4. Hebel, Leighty, & Coffey all reach base to start the inning, then DISASTER for the Birds. Horner hits one of the end of the bat that goes about 20 feet up the 1st base line and 1st baseman Rachel Hardesty dives for and makes the catch, as she trys to get to her feet the ball hits the ground and in the "mass confusion" the runners are off. Hardesty throws home not knowing what the call was, the catcher Schreiber throws to 3rd where Fr. Loren Zimmerman steps on the base. Time is called and the umpires have a "pow-wow", and when they emerge the call is.........batter is out on catch & runner on 3rd out. Quillen then walks to load the bases for the 2nd time in the inning, but Neace gets So. Ashley Grosser to chase a bad pitch for a strikeout. The Breds dodge a bullet and escape giving up no runs in the inning. The Breds get a 2 out base runner in the 5th, but nothing. Highlands again gets the bases loaded with 2 out and score their 1st run of the game on a walk, before Horner strikeout to end the inning. The Breds get a 2 out pinch-hit single from Fr. Morgan Martini, but that's all in the 6th. The Highlands 6th starts off with Quillen drawing a walk, at this point it's time for the showers for Neace and to the mound comes Taylor Burkart. She K's Grosser, gets Hollingsworth to pop-out, but Graybill drives one to the gap in right-center for and RBI triple. The inning ends with a strikeout of Turner, but the Birds have made 3-2.

The Breds send 10 batters to the plate in the top of the 7th and plate 5 on a combination of hits and errors. Burkart gets the Birds to go down 1-2-3 in the 7th and that's your ballgame.

NewCath....3.0.0.0.0.0.5--8-10-2

Highlands...0.0.0.0.1.1.0--2-7-5

Bases loaded. Pop up is caught. F3 drops ball after the out is completed.

Did all of the runners tag or did they never go back to their base when the ball was hit?

What did the runners on first and second do?

Congrats on a nice win for the Breds. Tough to beat any body 4 times in one season, especially a rival like this. Good luck in the district finals and in the regional tournament.

Runners on 1st and 2nd were able to get back to their respective base, however the girl on 3rd ran home and she made no attempt to return to 3rd and the catcher through the ball to 3rd to recorded the out. Let me tell you it was "WAY TOO BIZARRE" to watch live, trust me. In all fairness to the Highlands girls, on this play, they were definitely "between a rock and a hard place".

Did Blue yell "out" on the catch?

I assume there was no infield fly rule called since the player had to come and dive for the ball?

Yes, but in was "mass chaos" none the less.

If the base coaches said "run" then it's on them.

I assume the HHS coaches didn't argue.

I assume the HHS coaches didn't argue.

They argued it wasnt a catch. I was 5 feet away from it. It definitely wasnt a clean catch. It hit her glove and rolled up her arms as she was still falling. However, I thought she held on to it for a catch. But I was the ONLY person in that section that felt she held on and there were others even closer than me. So it was a very tough call and it put the runners in a very tight spot. The ump did say out once he let the play evolve, but by that time the runner that scored from third was already half way to the dugout after scoring and he didnt say it very loud because I think he was still a little unsure of the catch. The runner scoring from third was also a 6th grade pinch runner. Because the play was so weird, it put that much more pressure on the youngster. Just a tough play for all.

Either way, HHS had their opportunities in multiple innings and didn't finish their job. They also had two bad innings of errors. If they hit at all and reduce just a few errors, I think they win fairly easy honestly. But you never know what you're going to get with a young team.

Awww.....

It makes a lot more sense now coming from you. I will take your expertise on this situation over anybody on here. From where I was sitting I couldn't see the play at all but I figured something had to happen for the uproar. I agree with opportunities.....For instance, HHS had a runner on 1st & 3rd....The 1st base runner steals 2nd. It wasn't a great throw to 2nd but it was okay. The shortstop had to end up on her elbows before the play was finished because of the throw and the base runner coming in for the slide. I don't care if the girl thinks she is Barry Larkin, she's not throwing the 3rd base runner out going to home. She could of back peddled home...Very poor base running if you ask me!!! Overall I thought HHS played a very decent game.

Did anybody else catch the Fan/Parent standing down the Left field line during the game. Wow!!!! You would of thought this game was for the National Championship. Settle down little guy, enjoy it while you can. It's only Highlands your girl is playing and not the Yankees!!!

Good luck Breds! Very nice team.....

Let me say this it was a good game to watch minus the 1st and 7th inning. I was standing behind the plate and watched the girl catch the ball. The umpire though did a horrible job calling the batter out. He was not clear at all Brooke Dill had already crossed the plate before the umpire ever made a call it was extremely poor on his part. The coaches had to send her cause the ump never made a call.

Even then I was a little disappointed with the behavior of the fans. It's a game played by the girls and the parents need to remember that. Bad calls happen in ever game at every level but some times it's the actions of the parents that are remembered more then the game it self.

Good luck to NCC

I would have to agree that some of the verbal comments made to the homeplate umpire were very abusive in a personal nature. Standing from the shelter area, it was hard to hear and it was very hard to see what had happened, but the actions of some of the parents were very uncalled for.

I think the umpire made what he felt was the right call, no matter right or wrong it is a judgement call, but I must say he needs to be commended on ignoring the parents/fans and kept the game moving. While whenever NCC and Highlands play the game will always be intense due to the nature of being neighborhood rivals, but I must agree with ABC comments. Everyone likes to see their team be successful, but to verbally abuse a umpire such as was done last night was a bit much. I can honestly say that no umpire ever intends or wants to determine the outcome of the game or would ever become one-sided.... or lets just say it, cheat anyone.

Both teams are young and I think when Highlands gets their pitchers healthy they willl be a force in the future.

Good Luck to the Lady Breds!!

Without a DOUBT, it was.

I try to give those not in attendance enough info to what happened. This game definitely had many highlights to speak of.
