If it wouldn't give about a hundred spoilers, I'd love to break that scene down and project it out across the entire season and the entire series. "Life just be that way I guess . . . Didn't have to put no cap in him though . . . kill a man over some [small stuff]." Are we not able to discuss ahead of time and future things? I think that will take away from the discussions as there is so much that happens that makes you think of the future seasons.

I haven't had a chance to re-watch the whole episode yet, just that scene. As long as we're cool with posting spoilers, it'll make the discussions a lot more fulfilling and complete for those of us who've seen the entire show. Interesting note: that story of why Snot Boogie got shot is a true story that appears in David Simon's book "Homicide: A Year On the Killing Streets." If you have a chance, I HIGHLY recommend it. He spends the entire year of 1988 (basically the height of the crack epidemic and the crime boom that came with it) shadowing a squad of homicide detectives with incredible access. It's a great book.

I've got the book but never made it past the first 100 pages. I actually got it back out again in hopes I would restart it sometime soon. You can see some character ideas from the show in that book.

March 28, 201214 yr I'm only halfway through season two so I'm going to finish the series and then catch back up wherever you guys are at. I'll probably be done with all 5 seasons in a month. Maybe less.
March 29, 201214 yr My initial thought when I originally watched this episode was something to the effect of "Man, there's a lot of characters... I'm not sure I can keep up." And for the first few episodes, I was right. It was actually very interesting - after watching the entire series - to go back and watch season 1 again. Knowing everyone... It made so much more sense! :lol: I don't really have a lot to say about the first episode. I do think it's interesting, though, that one of the big rules is that business is not discussed in the car... While if you go through the entire series, you pretty much learn that it may be the only safe place to talk.
March 29, 201214 yr Author The scene with Rawls and the "fingers" pointed for McNulty's benefit. Good times. We get to meet so many different characters, and having watched the series you can really see where they have come from. We hear Daniels is a career movement candidate, working his way up the ladder, and McNutly think's he has nothing good in him. We meet the Judge that plays a fairly significant role through the season. We start to see Bunk and McNulty's friendship, and I especially enjoy the scene where Bunk tells McNulty about him shooting the mouse for his wife with his service weapon. The episode ending with "D" seeing that it is the witness in his own trial that gets capped and you can almost read his mind that he feels responsible for that.

Kima told them there would be too guns. They found the shotgun but forgot about looking for the pistol. Also, what about how even in episode 1, McNulty has his nose in other cops business by attending the trial. As someone tells him later on, he is caring when it ain't his turn to care...

If I remember right, in a sense of irony, McNulty told Bunk in that very episode that Bunk was giving a f' when it wasn't his turn, seems like it was at a murder scene that Bunk paged McNulty to come to.

I'm way into season 1 now, I can't just watch 1 episode at a time, we have to start cranking some out! I've got so many good tidbits to get into like that. I think we are past spoilers, there will be many spoilers in these threads.
