Do we want 1 episode per week or put up several episodes to comment on? I'm down for whatever. Each episode could lend itself to some good discussions.

I'll have my first discussion comments ready by Thursday. Ready to get this thing rolling.

I don't have a copy and I don't have HBOGo. So I'm out. Have fun though!

I've never tried to post from my phone before but here goes. I just finished the episode on my IPOD and man had I forgot a lot of things. It's very interesting to see how the characters start out. The opening scene is fantastic....I mean who can forget snot boogie! The kid talking with McNulty is dead serious when he delivers the line about "we have to man. It's America.". That cracks me up.

In the courthouse scene we meet (or at least see) several characters we will come to know. Stringer, DeAngelo, Levy, WeeBay etc... I remember watching it for the first time and being lost in all the faces and why they were important.

More to come later.

I got my S1 back yesterday but probably won't get to watch until Wednesday or Thursday. But I'm itching to contribute so I YouTubed this scene.

I think this scene is insanely fitting for the tone of the series. You see the amazing depth Simon is willing to go. Your normal police serial wouldn't bother with the details. Not Simon, like it will be shown time and time again Simon will stick in for the long haul for the payoff. With this scene we get the fantastic payoff of "we have to man. It's America." While it may just hit us as a funny story with a fantastic punchline on first viewing. Once you have seen the series in it's entirety you realize that this is exactly what Simon wants to show, "we have to man. It's America". I think Simon would argue that many of the problems explored in the show are due to the attitude that this is America and we have to do it that way...

I've always heard the first scene of each season sets the tone of the entire season and what will happen during that season. This is something we can look at as we progress.

If this is true, what tone do you think Simon wanted to set?

I was going to watch it last night but I was in a 5 hour fantasy baseball draft because the commissioner had it set up for 1 minute and 30 seconds in between each pick.

You were in two drafts last night?

It felt like it.

I just watched that opening scene. So much foreshadowing. If it wouldn't give about a hundred spoilers, I'd love to break that scene down and project it out across the entire season and the entire series.

"Life just be that way I guess . . . Didn't have to put no cap in him though . . . kill a man over some [small stuff]."
