Last year in the region tournament, Barren County ended Willie Feldhaus's run as HC at Russell County 68-59 in the region tourney, avenging an earlier loss in the regular season. Both those matchups last year were at Barren County, and the Lakers took advantage of getting to host this time around. After a tight game early, Russell County stretched into a 33-20 lead at halftime, and increased it to 15 points entering the fourth quarter. Then, the Trojans finally came to life, drawing within a single point and having multiple chances to tie or take the lead. But Russell County could not be denied, puulling out the 62-59 victory. Jones had 19 points for Barren County. The victory led to a flip flop in our ranks for the two teams. 14th District Draw - The dust finally settled on the 14th District this week. On the court, South Warren seized control of the #3 seed with an 85-81 win over Warren East, relegating Greenwood and Warren East to the 4/5 game. Off the court, the coin flip for #1 took place on February 15th and when the dust settled, it was Warren Central with the 1 seed, Bowling Green with the 2 seed. That sets up a great semifinal between Bowling Green and South Warren, played at South Warren. The Spartans will try to break two streaks at once - never having beaten Bowling Green and never making the region tournament. Lovan Elevates Franklin-Simpson - To say Franklin-Simpson missed Lovan during his absence with a broken wrist would be a wild understatement. Without Lovan, the Wildcats went 2-14. With him, they've gone 7-3, including winning 4 of 5 since his return. Since coming back, he's been averaging 24 points per game. Last week, the Wildcats knocked off South Warren and Allen County-Scottsville in back to back games, elevating them into the top 10 and placing themselves as a legitimate threat to make the region tournament. Fourth Time The Charm? - Clinton County has been close, sooooooo close. Three times the Bulldogs have played old 16th District rival Monroe County three times this year. They lost all three.... by a combined five points. Monroe County has yet to lose to a region opponent, and it would be an upset if they did not maintain that until at least the region tournament. Clinton County is a lock to make the region tournament and perhaps it is there that they'll finally get over the hump. Snow - It's coming folks, and it will probably take out most if not all the games next week. It'll be interesting to see how the teams respond to potentially long layoffs leading into the district tournaments. Upcoming Games of the Week 2/19 - #6 Barren County at #4 Clinton County - It's slim pickings this week and again, it seems likely that a lot of games will get canceled in the snowpocalypse. This is one of the few games matching two top 10 region teams and is a matchup of two teams likely to make the region tournament. Last season these two had a true classic, with Clinton County going on the road for an 82-80 double ovetime win.
  2. There are not many 4th Region records in any time recent that I would claim to not know, but Monroe County accomplished something this season that I am not certain of how long it has been since it occurred. The Falcons ran through their regular season unbeaten against 4th Region teams, and I cannot tell you the last time a team outside the 14th District accomplished that. It is very rare and Monroe County is to be applauded for it. I point that out so you may understand that it is a no-brainer that they are the clear cut favorite for the 15th District crown. That’s not to say they’re incapable of being beaten, but that judging from the results of this season, it seems quite unlikely. Only Allen County-Scottsville’s 64-63 nailbiter result shows vulnerability within the district, the only district contest Monroe County did not win by double digits. Oh, and the tournament is at Monroe County where the Falcons have not lost since last January. To the matchups..... 15th District Tournament at Monroe County High School February 24th #1 Monroe County vs. #4 Glasgow – This is a rematch of last season’s district semifinals, which Monroe County narrowly escaped as the top seed, 67-64 in overtime. That season they split with the Scotties and had actually lost to them by double digits during the year. We actually predicted a Glasgow upset but came up just short. So does that mean Glasgow has a shot this season? No, it does not mean that and no, they do not. Sadly, Glasgow has been in complete disarray this season, stumbling to a 4-22 record and losing to Monroe County three times by an average of 35 points per game. Expect the same here. Prediction: Monroe County by 35 February 25th #2 Barren County vs. #3 Allen County-Scottsville – Since the previous game was a rematch of last year, naturally this is as well. In fact, be it in the semifinals or finals, this is the fourth straight year these teams will meet. All three previous matchups were won by the Trojans, which isn’t a good omen for Allen County-Scottsville. Neither is what occurred in the last meeting of the two teams, a 65-48 blowout win for Barren County on the road at AC/S back on January 23rd. This was after the Patriots were game in an 88-83 triple overtime thriller back in early December that earned our game of the week honors. The Patriots had a strong start to the year relatively speaking. They went 0-3 against a competitive schedule, but then reeled off 7 straight wins and overall won 11 of 14. But since mid-January the needle moved in the other direction, and they are just 3-8 in their last 11 games. Even the wins have been suspect, coming against teams that are a combined 14-64, and none were even by double digits. This is a team that was in desperate need of some momentum coming into the postseason, but it is not going to happen thanks to the snow. The Patriots do have two of the top scorers in the region in big man Dylan Haper (19.6 PPG) and Jake Sikes (15.0 PPG), and they’ll need them to come up big. Barren County meanwhile has been chugging along as they usually do, posting another 20 win season and a strong 16-4 record in their last 20 games. Their only region losses have been to four of the top teams in the region, Monroe County (twice), Bowling Green, Warren Central, and Russell County. Barren County is the type of team that can bury you in a hurry if they heat up from outside, led by sharpshooter Wade Coomer, who has made 47 treys on the season and averages 18.8 points per game. Nick Mabe helps shoulder the load with a 13.2 PPG clip as well. Ultimately, it is hard to see AC/S pulling the upset with the way their last month and a half has gone. Prediction: Barren County by 12 February 27th Predicted Matchup #1 Monroe County vs. #2 Barren County – The undefeated region campaign for Monroe County is a true feather in their cap, but it isn’t the game they’re really hunting. They’re out for titles, and that begins with the district title. They have not won one since moving over to the 15th District in 2006, last winning a district crown back in 2004 when they were in the 16th District. It’s been a long, long wait, and there’s nowhere better for them to try to do it than on their home court. We predict they’ll have to go through Barren County to do it, and the Trojans are the three time defending district champions, which includes a bit of an upset victory by the Trojans over Monroe County a year ago. The Falcons have the KABC player of the year in Dillon Geralds, who can play just about anywhere on the floor. When he gets hot he will have no conscience about where he shoots it from and you can bet he’ll make them. He can play the post, the wing, up top, anywhere. He’s surrounded by perimeter shooters that have helped the Falcons to a modest 35% clip from three, and four players have made 30 or more treys. It makes the Falcons very difficult to guard and is why they boast one of the state’s highest scoring margins with an average victory of over 14 PPG. They are tournament tested thanks to their run through the region’s All A tournament and a run to the finals of the state tournament. They have experience in close games too, winning a trio of games against one of the region’s best - Clinton County - by a combined 5 points. Simply put, the Falcons can play any way they need to, and they are the class of the district. After they get this trophy, they’ll look for more at Diddle. Prediction: Monroe County by 9
  3. Fourth Region Top 10 1) Monroe County (22-3) - 1/29 63-55 W Murray (All A ), 1/30 55-53 W Danville (All A), 1/31 55-46 W Owen Co. (All A), 2/1 36-78 L NCC (All A) Previous Rank: 1 This Week: 2/3 vs. Glasgow, 2/6 at #10 Allen County-Scottsville 2) Bowling Green (19-4) - 1/26 75-40 W at #10 Allen County-Scottsville, 1/27 58-50 W Muhlenberg Co., 1/30 69-57 W #2 Warren Central Previous Rank: 3 This Week: 2/3 vs. #9 South Warren, 2/7 vs. Greenwood 3) Warren Central (15-7) - 1/27 68-51 W #8 South Warren, 1/30 57-69 L at #3 Bowling Green Previous Rank: 2 This Week: 2/3 vs. Christian County, 2/6 at Warren East 4) Clinton County (16-7) - 1/30 62-56 W #10 Allen County-Scottsville Previous Rank: 4 This Week: 2/3 at Caverna, 2/6 vs. Glasgow 5) Barren County (17-6) - 1/27 79-55 W #5 Logan County, 1/30 58-45 W at Glasgow Previous Rank: 6 This Week: 2/3 at Greenwood, 2/6 at Hart County 6) Russell County (10-9) - 1/26 77-45 W Cumberland County, 1/27 79-59 W at Pulaski County Previous Rank: 7 This Week: 2/2 at South Laurel, 2/5 vs. Casey County, 2/6 at Metcalfe County 7) Logan County (14-6) - 1/27 55-79 L at #6 Barren County, 1/29 50-76 L at Daviess County Previous Rank: 5 This Week: 2/2 vs. Trigg County, 2/6 vs. #8 Russellville 8) Russellville (10-9) - 1/27 85-75 W Springfield (TN), 1/30 70-60 W #8 South Warren Previous Rank: 9 This Week: 2/3 vs. Franklin-Simpson, 2/6 at #7 Logan County 9) South Warren (10-12) - 1/27 51-68 L at #2 Warren Central, 1/30 60-70 L at #9 Russellville Previous Rank: 8 This Week: 2/3 at #2 Bowling Green, 2/6 vs. Greenwood 10) Allen County-Scottsville (11-11) - 1/26 40-75 L #3 Bowling Green, 1/30 56-62 L at #4 Clinton County Previous Rank: 10 This Week: 2/3 vs. Hart County, 2/6 vs. #1 Monroe County, 2/7 vs. Todd County Central Last Week's Game of the Week - The intra-region games weren't all that pretty with most of the significant games ending in double digit margins, so we turn again to the All A for the highlight. Monroe County and Danville met in the state All A quarterfinals and it was not short on drama. Danville led by as many as 11 in the fourth quarter, but the Falcons took care of that with a 13-0 run that was part of a 20-7 finishing kick that sent them into the semis. Monroe County was fairly pedestrian from the field, shooting just 38% from the floor and 27% from three, but their 22 points off of turnovers proved to be the difference. They parlayed that into a run to the finals, and barring something unforeseen, Clinton County will be their only major hurdle in the remainder of the regular season. Strong chance they remain our #1 heading into the postseason and could possibly carry a 27-3 record by that point. Almost everything has come up big for Monroe so far. District Races - An update on where we stand as the regular season winds down. 13th District - There's still a lot of movement that can happen. Logan County sits at 5-0 and needs only to beat Russellville on the 6th or have Russellville fall in one of their other two district games to clinch the #1 seed. But should the Panthers win out, they'll tie with Logan County for the top. Franklin-Simpson can clinch at least the #3 seed with a win over Todd County Central on Friday, and could theoretically play up to the #2 seed. At current, Russellville is 2-1, Franklin-Simpson 1-3, and Todd County Central 0-4. 14th District - Last season was one of the very few clean draws for the #1 seed we've had recently, marking the first time since 2008 that there was no tie for the #1 seed. After Bowling Green's win over Warren Central last Friday, the odds are in favor of those two teams facing a coin flip in a couple of weeks, though there are plenty of games remaining that could alter that course. Warren Central missed a chance to clinch the top seed in that game, but would have to lose out to face even a chance of falling below the #2 seed. Greenwood gained a huge win at Warren East to move one game up on both the Raiders and South Warren, sliding into the #3 spot. South Warren perhaps has the best remaining schedule for movement, facing both Greenwood and Warren East in addition to Bowling Green, while both Greenwood and Warren East have to play both Warren Central and Bowling Green in addition to South Warren. The 14th is a 5 team district, and each of those three teams will desperately want to avoid the 4/5 game which would require two wins to advance to the region tournament. 15th District - The matchups are officially set and the jersey colors decided in the 15th District. Monroe County has clinched the top spot via a season sweep of Barren County, and even if they lost their two remaining games this week, would win a tiebreaker with the Trojans based on that. They'll face Glasgow in the first round which is winless in the district at 0-5. Barren County has clinched the 2 seed with a 4-2 record while Allen County-Scottsville will be in the 3 spot at 2-3 currently. 16th District - The 16th is almost certainly heading to a coin toss as Russell County will likely knock off Metcalfe County on Friday to enter into a 5-1 tie with Clinton County for the top spot. Cumberland County is locked into the #4 seed with an 0-6 record while Metcalfe County has clinched the 3 seed with a 2-3 record. In any scenario, Clinton County and Russell County are virtual locks to advance regardless of which opponent they play. Cumberland County is winless and Metcalfe County's only wins are the two district wins they have over Cumberland County Upcoming Games of the Week 2/3 - #9 South Warren at #2 Bowling Green - The Spartans are a combined 0-22 against Warren Central and Bowling Green, and will once again try to pick themselves off the mat and come up with a signature win for the program. South Warren has lost 5 of their last 7, and dropped both results last week after what looked like a corner had been turned in a strong win at Russell County. 2/6 - #8 Russellville at #7 Logan County - The Clash of the Cats may have district tournament implications as mentioned above. The Cougars wiped the floor with Russellville in their January 2 meeting by a score of 72-52, but recently saw a winning streak snapped with a rough 0-2 week to tumble down the ranks. Meanwhile, that Logan County loss is the last one Russellville has taken, currently sitting on a 6 game win streak. Both of these teams will want that #1 seed badly as that likely means avoiding Franklin-Simpson, a far more dangerous opponent than Todd County Central.
  4. Fourth Region Top 10 1) Monroe County (17-2) - 1/16 64-54 W at #4 Barren County, 1/17 68-33 W at Metcalfe County Previous Rank: 2 This Week: 1/22 vs. TBA (4th Region All "A") 2) Warren Central (12-6) - 1/13 66-16 W Glasgow, 1/16 64-58 OT W #1 Bowling Green Previous Rank: 3 This Week: 1/20 at #8 South Warren, 1/23 vs. Greenwood 3) Bowling Green (14-4) - 1/13 68-62 W #5 Russell County, 1/16 58-64 OT L at #3 Warren Central Previous Rank: 1 This Week: 1/20 vs. Christian County, 1/23 vs. Warren East 4) Clinton County (13-6) - 1/13 68-45 W at Cumberland County, 1/16 48-44 W #5 Russell County Previous Rank: 6 This Week: 1/19 at Todd County Central 5) Russell County (7-7) - 1/13 62-68 L at #1 Bowling Green, 1/16 44-48 L at #6 Clinton County Previous Rank: 5 This Week: 1/20 vs. Southwestern, 1/22 vs. Adair County, 1/23 vs. #8 South Warren 6) Logan County (12-4) - 1/13 61-46 W at #7 Allen County-Scottsville Previous Rank: 9 This Week: 1/20 vs. Edmonson County, 1/23 at Franklin-Simpson 7) Barren County (13-6) - 1/13 69-68 W #10 Warren East, 1/16 54-64 L #2 Monroe County Previous Rank: 4 This Week: 1/20 vs. LaRue County, 1/23 at #9 Allen County-Scottsville, 1/24 at Edmonson County 8) South Warren (9-9) - 1/13 72-61 W Edmonson County Previous Rank: 8 This Week: 1/20 vs. #2 Warren Central, 1/23 at #5 Russell County 9) Allen County-Scottsville (11-6) - 1/13 46-61 L #9 Logan County, 1/16 81-56 W Glasgow Previous Rank: 7 This Week: 1/20 vs. #10 Russellville, 1/23 vs. #7 Barren County, 1/24 at Caverna 10) Russellville (7-9) - 1/13 68-67 W at Greenwood, 1/16 60-52 W at Franklin-Simpson Previous Rank: NR This Week: 1/20 at #9 Allen County-Scottsville Last Week's Game of the Week - Could it be anything else other than Bowling Green at Warren Central? Annually these teams are the ones to beat for the region title (though as you can see Monroe has something to say about that this year), so any time they meet, it's big. And round 1 went to the Dragons via 64-58 win in OT in one of the most tense, nerve-wracking games you'd ever see. Incredibly though it made it to OT, Bowling Green never led. They were tied several times and possessed the ball on numerous occasions with a chance to take the lead, but could never climb the mountain all the way. The Dragons managed a 25-15 lead in the first half, but once that was closed the game was never led by more than 6 the rest of the way. Most of the second half and OT was spent with the Dragons maintaining a lead between 1-4 points. Just when you thought it was over, the script flipped. The Dragons had gotten out to a 6 point lead with less than a minute left and at the line to go up 7. That free throw was missed, and after the Purples cut it to 4 they forced a turnover and cut it to 2 with just over 10 seconds remaining. After Jared Savage missed the front end of a 1 and 1, Logan Riehn rebounded a missed three pointer for the win and tied it to send it to the extra session. But again the Dragons did not let go of the lead, gaining a crucial district victory. We'll do it again in two weeks. A New Sheriff - You can see it plainly in the rankings above, but it is worth drawing your attention to that Monroe County now heads up our ranks for the region, dethroning Bowling Green which had held the position since the preseason. The Falcons entered the year as the #3 team, and while not quite a favorite at the time were by no means a dark horse. We've had them pegged from the beginning as a serious threat and they have proven it on the court. They're unbeaten in 4th Region play, are the only region team to defeat Warren Central, which is the only region team to beat Bowling Green. It is highly unlikely that the Falcons will lose a region game before their matchup with Bowling Green on January 31st, so expect that this will be the status quo until at least then. Monroe County is a serious player in the region this year. Holding Server At Home - It's no secret who will come out of the 16th District this year as Metcalfe County and Cumberland County just aren't on the level of their district mates. But it's always interesting to watch the games between Clinton County and Russell County, and the two split their regular season matchups in the last two weeks, each winning at home, necessitating the formality of a coin toss for their district seeding. Ultimately these teams will meet a third time in the all important district game. Keifer Dalton Makes History - Keifer Dalton recently broke Chuck Conner's all-time scoring record at Clinton County, surpassing his 1,887 point mark that had stood for 52 years. Conner was on hand for a ceremony recognizing the achievement earlier this month during a girls' varsity game. Upcoming Games of the Week 1/20 - #2 Warren Central at #8 South Warren - It's another chance for the Spartans to get that elusive first victory over the Dragons. They were within 5 points twice last season. 1/23 - #1 Monroe County vs. #4 Clinton County - This is a bit of a gamble as this isn't a scheduled game. These two are heavy favorites to win their games in the All A tournament to play each other in the title game. If they do meet, it will be their second of the year, after a two point Monroe County win on the road earlier this year.

Previous Rank: NR This Week: 1/9 at #3 Warren Central Last Week's Game of the Week - "Last week" is relative since this is the first notebook in a few weeks, so let's say game of the week since the last one. And that coincidentally came one day after our last update, waaaay back on December 9th. Call it a signature loss for Allen County-Scottsville when they went on the road to #4 Barren County and came up just short, falling 88-83 in TRIPLE overtime. After the game was tied at 61 entering OT, AC/S seized control, jumping out to a five point lead with just under a minute left in the extra frame. But a Nick Mabe three ball tied it at 71 to go to the second OT. In that session it was the Trojans that took control, and it was the Patriots' turn to hit a big three, this by Thomas Spencer tot tie it at 77. The Trojans were ultimately able to gain the lead and win it on free throws late to gain the crucial district win. Both teams are in the top 7 of the region now. Impact Game - The game of greatest impact has to be Monroe County's 62-53 win over Warren Central in the Owensboro Invitational tournament. It was just the second win ever for the Falcons over Warren Central, a team that has been to five straight region title games and entered the year a favorite to go back again. Monroe County had already moved ahead of the Dragons in the BGP rankings, but now we have concrete proof that the Falcons are ready to challenge. They remain unbeaten against 4th Region teams and have added wins over Barren County and Russell County as well. They have twice narrowly missed opportunities to play Bowling Green, but may yet have their chance to lay claim to #1 when the teams play at Monroe on January 31st. Impact Injury - Tavin Lovan may be just a sophomore, but there's a strong argument he is the region's best player and he is certainly its best prospect. In his first four games of the year he averaged over 29 points per game. But in the fifth game, he broke his non-shooting wrist, sidelining him for up to a month and a half. The Wildcats expect him back in late January, possibly for their district tilt against Todd County Central. Franklin-Simpson went on to lose the game against Logan County that he was hurt in, as well as five of the next six. And it doesn't get easier this week as the Wildcats take on the #2-#4 teams in the region. It is likely his absence will severely damage their record and seeding, but could also possibly transform them into a bit of a dark horse when he returns, a team that will far outperform their record at that point. Favorites Look Like It - Bowling Green was made #1 in preseason after their strong close to the previous year led them to the region title and state final four, and that train has not come close to derailing through the first month of the year. The Purples are off to a strong 11-3 start, matching last season's mark through 14 games as their best start since 09/10. Their losses are to highly regarded WKY powers Henderson County, Owensboro, and Christian County, and they boast wins over Apollo, Daviess County, and Elizabethtown. Bowling Green is 21-4 since their loss to Owensboro late last season and there are a lot more wins ahead of them. Upcoming Games of the Week 1/6 - #1 Bowling Green at #4 Barren County - As mentioned, the Purples are rolling and have won 14 straight games against 4th Region teams. Warren Central is the only region team to beat them in just over two years.... since Barren County took the Purples down on New Year's Day in 2013. The Trojans enter with a seven game win streak and will hope to rectify last year's failure to defeat BG when the Trojans had homecourt advantage in the region tournament. 1/9 - #7 Allen County-Scottsville at #2 Monroe County - Monroe is already out to a 2-0 start in the district and can put a stranglehold on it with a home win over the Patriots. Meanwhile AC/S will look to continue their climb up the region rankings and hope to get back in the #1 seed discussion in the 15th. 1/10 - #4 Barren County at #3 Warren Central - It's kind of a big week for Barren County as they have another year of double duty in a single week against Bowling Green and Warren Central. In this one they take on the Dragons, a team that has won 15 of 16 against Barren County, and has not lost to the Trojans in Dragon Gym since 1996. Last year each team was more highly regarded, and the two teams lit up the scoreboard to the tune of an 84-81 Warren Central victory at Barren County. Games between these two are usually quite entertaining.

I felt strongly enough about the odds of Monroe County and Clinton County facing in the finals to make it one of my picks last week, and they didn't disappoint, rolling to the finals for a matchup of our #1 and #4 teams. Monroe County led most of the way, but were never able to stray too far from Clinton County, holding a 23-20 halftime lead that swelled to 40-32 after a John Geralds three at the third quarter buzzer. But Clinton County scratched and clawed back as Monroe County missed seven crucial free throws down the stretch, allowing a Keifer Dalton three ball to tie it at 52 and send it to an extra session. Incredibly, no points were scored until Dillon Geralds hit a free throw with 14 seconds left. Then everything went crazy. Geralds missed his second free throw and the Falcons committed a foul on the rebound to put Clinton County on the line..... where they missed the front end of a one and one. Go to the other end where Ty Mink had two shots for the Falcons. Missed them both. Then Dalton fouls out of the game for Clinton County via a charge. Then Monroe County turns the ball over. All of this took place in a span of 8 seconds. Clinton County had the ball with a chance to win but the guy you'd want shooting it was on the bench having fouled out. Ultimately, the Bulldogs missed two shots that would have won it, giving Monroe County the 4th Region All "A" Championship via a single Dillon Geralds free throw in overtime. A game worthy of former district rivals, top 5 region teams, and of a title. Honorable Mention - A strong contender was the South Warren at Russell County matchup on Friday. The Lakers have made a strong effort to schedule more of the region at-large, and this was their third matchup against a 14th District team. Some of the shine came off of this game as Russell County entered having lost three of four and South Warren had gotten knocked around by Warren Central on Tuesday, also their third loss in four games. Russell County used the homecourt to their advantage most of the night with leads of 7, 9, and 9 at the intermissions, but the only one that mattered was the last one, and South Warren got that with a 70-69 victory. 8th grader Marquise Walker drained two free throws with no time on the clock for the win. Lovan Watch - Tavin Lovan, one of the most prolific scorers in the region despite being just a sophomore, has been sidelined since December 12th with a broken non-shooting wrist. Franklin-Simpson started the year 3-1 with him, but since he went down, they're 2-14. Word at the time was that he was targeting a January 30th matchup with Todd County Central, and it appears that he is on track for exactly that as the cast is reportedly off. The Wildcats still have three district games remaining, including crucially a pair of matchups with Todd County Central. At current, those games may determine the #3/#4 seed in the district, and avoiding Logan County, which has almost clinched the top seed. All "A" - Monroe County will take on Murray in the first round of the All "A" Classic, and should be favored in that one. Should they advance, they may get a crack at Williamsburg, the final undefeated team in the state. Upcoming Games of the Week 1/27 - #5 Logan County at #6 Barren County - The Cougars have a seven game winning streak entering this one, and will look to snap a three game skid against the Trojans. Meanwhile Barren County is looking to climb the rankings, and their only three losses since December 20th have been to Monroe County, Warren Central, and Bowling Green - our top 3 teams. 1/30 - #2 Warren Central at #3 Bowling Green - Round 1 went to overtime with the Dragons coming out on top, knocking the Purples off their #1 perch where they'd been since preseason. In Round 2, Bowling Green will look to get that one back in a crucial seeding game. 1/31 - #3 Bowling Green at #1 Monroe County - I'm including this one because if played it will be outstanding, but my feeling is that Monroe County will be too good for our hopes, and will advance in the All "A", likely sinking this game (if it isn't already preemptively canceled). If they play, Monroe County will be looking to put a stranglehold on the #1 rank for the rest of the year.

A win would put them in the driver's seat for the #3 seed in the district. To say things did not start well would be an understatement. South Warren trailed by as much as 15 in the second quarter and by 10 at halftime, but a furious rally in the third quarter spilled into the fourth, and with just under 6 minutes left in the game, South Warren had outscored Bowling Green 40-18 in a roughly 17 minute stretch to take a 51-44 advantage. But it was not to be. The Purples scored the next ten points and took a lead they would not relinquish, though the Spartans had several chances to tie or take the lead late. If South Warren's breakthrough is to come this year, it'll have to be in the postseason. District Races - Two districts have no remaining games, two districts have their postseason matchups set while another just has to settle tie at the top. And then there's the 14th.... 13th District - With Russellville's narrow 68-66 win over Franklin-Simpson, Logan County's double digit thrashing of Russellville, and Franklin-Simpson's season sweep of Todd County Central, the 13th District postseason lineup became set in stone. Logan County completed a perfect 6-0 district run, ensuring that there will not be a third straight season where Russellville and Franklin-Simpson advance to the region tournament, as those teams will meet in the 2/3. Logan County will look to return to the region tourney for the first time since 2012 (itself their only trip since 1998) against a Todd County Central team they swept. The Rebels for their part will hope to overcome the odds and go back to region for the first time since 2003. 14th District - The march to the coin flip(s) continued as Warren Central and Bowling Green matched pace and sit at 6-1. They'll each head on the road on Friday in games they'll be favored in, with Central visiting Greenwood and Bowling Green looking to extend their dominance of Warren East. If both win, it'll be a tie at the top for the fifth time in six seasons. South Warren is actually the only team in the district controlling their own destiny in pursuit of a goal. If the Spartans beat Warren East on Tuesday, they clinch the crucial #3 seed as Greenwood could only tie them and South Warren has the season sweep. Should the Spartans falter, it sets up a likely three way tie for third unless the Gators or Raiders pull big upsets in the aforementioned games against Warren Central and Bowling Green. There's a scenario where we know basically nothing after this week except that Warren Central and Bowling Green will be 1-2 in some order and the others at 3-5 in some order. The 14th District = chaos as usual. 15th District - The district slate is done and the seeds had already been determined as mentioned last week. It was nice and tidy in the 15th district. Monroe County went a perfect 6-0 - a feat they had not accomplished since they were in the 16th District back in 2004. Barren County lost only to Monroe County, Allen County-Scottsville lost only to Monroe & Barren, while Glasgow went winless. 16th District - Business as usual in the 16th. Clinton County and Russell County split their season series, sending it to a coin flip to decide the top seed. Metcalfe County is locked into 3rd via their only two wins of the year, those coming over winless Cumberland County. Upcoming Games of the Week 2/10 - #5 Barren County at #6 Russell County - Just a friendly intra-region game, but the one with the most impact on our ranks this week. Our #1-#3 teams are the only ones to take down the Trojans in the region this year, while Russell County looks to avenge their loss at Barren County in last year's region tournament, the final game coached by Willie Feldhaus. 2/13 - #4 Clinton County at #1 Monroe County - These two teams have had some outstanding games this season, meeting once in December and then in the All "A" Region Finals last month. Monroe County won them both, but by a combined 3 points and one of them took an extra session. With all due respect to Greenwood and Warren East, who will play the Falcons next week, this is likely the only thing standing between Monroe County and a perfect regular season run through the region. The Falcons are unbeaten in true home or road games this season, with only a trio of neutral floor losses. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs will be hungry for a win to break through the glass ceiling. If you can make it to only one region game next week, make it this one.
  8. Inside South-Central Kentucky Football During each week of the year, Inside South-Central Kentucky Football will look at some of the teams from the greater Bowling Green area, and will include the following teams: Allen County-Scottsville, Barren County, Bowling Green, Franklin-Simpson, Glasgow, Greenwood, South Warren, Warren Central, and Warren East. The area will provide a healthy mix of teams with high expectations following successful years last year and teams looking to rebound from down seasons. And in one lonely case, a team that continues to struggle to gain a handle on winning. The belle of the ball is obviously Bowling Green. The Purples return 15 starters, all of them one-way players in the two platoon system. They have the longest current win streak in the state at 30, with an eye on taking down the state record of 50 wins next season. They are the dominant favorite in 5A, and may well cause the top spot in the South-Central Kentucky rankings I will release each week to be a mere formality. The loss of five coaches from an always great staff is the only possible concern. Warren Central does not have nearly the amount of returning starters that Bowling Green has, but what they do return should keep them in the mix at the top of 5A. They will have to deal with an all-new offensive line and having to move their best wide receiver into a quarterback, but still return several weapons that will give them the leg up on almost every team they play. The Dragons will more closely resemble their 2009 team which featured more quarterback runs to take advantage of senior QB Chris Porter-Bunton’s athleticism. After those two we find two teams that will immediately tell us which one is better, as they will line up against each other in the opening game. Warren East will be fairly hard to recognize from the team that was a game away from the state title game in 2012. They replace 22 seniors, their head coach, and their previous QB to a transfer. Veteran coach Steve Long will take the reins of the Raiders, and he’ll have arguably the premier player in the area as his ace on the field, junior Vanderbilt commit RB/LB Eli Brown. They’ll visit South Warren to open the 2013 campaign. Last year the Spartans gave Warren East all they could handle in a close 14-10 decision in that season’s opener, and this year’s edition will be the first chance for our rankings to get shaken up. The Spartans have been building to this year since the inception of the program, and like Warren East, they have an ace on the field in every game. That’s large and in charge senior DL Adrian Middleton, a monster on the field and Kentucky commit. The Spartans are a sleeper to make some significant noise on a statewide scale in 3A. Glasgow is two years removed from a state runner-up finish, and they return the type of team that will threaten to go back. With 31 upperclassmen, 17 seniors, and 15 returning starters, the Scotties are locked and loaded as the favorites in their district and region. At this point, Scottie fans are forgiven for peeking westward at what may be their greater challenge in the larger scheme of things, 2A favorite Caldwell County, a potential state semifinal opponent. Following those five, we have a potentially unknown quantity at this point. Greenwood has a new coach, one of the departed Bowling Green staff Chris Seabolt. Seabolt will have the services of senior QB Josh Dyer, a 2300 yard passer a year ago. But with some new wrinkles in the offense and a new defensive scheme, we may not have a read on the Gators until they get a few games under their belt. They do enter the season off of a 2012 campaign that featured their most regular season wins ever. Two teams that are looking to regain the glory of just a few years ago are Franklin-Simpson and Allen County-Scottsville. Franklin-Simpson played for the 4A state championship in 2011, but struggled in 2012 following the loss of most of their weapons from the 2011 edition and their head coach. New HC Doug Preston’s Wildcats limped to a 3-8 record that saw them win only two games against Kentucky competition. That year’s pain was this year’s gain as they return 17 starters in their attempt to climb back into competition. Allen County-Scottsville has experienced similar hardship, rolling to the 2010 4A state finals where they dropped a close 21-14 decision to Boyle County, but turning in only 4 and 3 wins in the last two years en route to a pair of first round losses. The Patriots will look to 13 seniors and 10 returning starters to take them back to the promised land. Which brings us to Barren County. The Trojans began the 2012 season with a 28-0 shutout win against Metcalfe County, but would drop their next 9 games by an average of nearly 30 points per game, only coming within a TD a single time – a 21-20 loss to Logan County that ended their playoff hopes. That ended a run of five straight playoff appearances for the Trojans. They will have a shot at returning to the playoffs, but they will be hard pressed to add their first playoff win since 1992, or their first winning record since 2000. South-Central Kentucky Rankings 1) Bowling Green 2) Warren Central 3) Warren East 4) South Warren 5) Glasgow 6) Greenwood 7) Franklin-Simpson 8) Allen County-Scottsville 9) Barren County
  9. The last two years for Allen County-Scottsville have been challenging to say the least. From 2008-2010 the Patriots made three straight region title games, compiled a 33-6 record, all culminating in a run to the 2010 4A state championship game. The past two years have brought no playoff wins and lost more games in each individual year than they did combined in 2008-2010. The 2012 season was not without positives. The Patriots had a strong win against surging 3A South Warren. They battled 2A power Glasgow to the wire and gave another 2A power Monroe County all they wanted in a loss on the road. Most importantly, the Patriots knocked off district rival Franklin-Simpson to gain a home playoff game and moving back up the ladder towards the top spot in the district that they consider their rightful home. Coach Brad Hood will enter his eighth season at the helm, and he will look to 13 seniors that have been in the program for four years to lead the team back to the promised land. The Patriots return five starters on each side of the ball, possibly none more important than senior RB Charlie Trapp. Trapp averaged 5.4 YPC in his junior campaign, gaining 664 yards and 6 TDs along with adding 226 yards and a TD receiving out of the backfield. He’ll be the bell cow, as no other Patriot runner returns that carried the ball more than 22 times. Those 22 rushes came from junior QB Colton Oakes, who will take the helm of the offense from departed seniors Kasey Johnson and Connor Ross. Those two combined for 86% of all passing yards for the Patriots last year, but Oakes did start a pair of crucial district games against Franklin-Simpson and Warren East last year, and threw for 164 yards and a TD on the year. His development will be crucial to Allen County-Scottsville’s success on the year. Protecting Oakes and blocking for Trapp will be a veteran offensive line, the deepest at Allen County-Scottsville since the seminal 2010 season. The Patriots return three starters, RG Michael Burton, RT Gabe Whitney, and LT Elijah Perea. The line was almost even more experienced, but two year starter at LG Jordan Keen was lost to an ACL tear during spring ball. The Patriot aerial attack will be aided by the return of leading receiver senior Jacob Howard. Howard accounted for a little over 25% of all receiving yards for the Patriots a year ago, and nearly half of their receiving TDs with 4. Howard is also the primary playmaker on kickoff and punt returns. Defensively, the Patriots will have the tough task of replacing all-purpose player Austin York, who led the team in tackles in addition to handling punting duties. The Patriots additionally lost their #2 and #3 leaders in tackles from a year ago and return no starters on the defensive line. The Patriots return a pair of linebackers in seniors Tanner Mutter and Wes Cornwell that combined for 101 tackles in 2012. The linebacking corps should also be bolstered by two way player junior OLB/WR Jordan Moss, who is anticipated to have a big impact on the defense. Allen County-Scottsville also returns almost their entire secondary with junior CB Cainan Cox, senior CB Caleb Vernon, and senior S Gage Link. Cainan Cox was co-leader on the team for interceptions in 2012 alongside Tanner Mutter. The Patriot 2013 schedule is a half and half mix of new and old faces. To open the year, Allen County-Scottsville will play Mercer County, a rematch from a year ago in Boyle County’s bowl game. This time, it will take place on the field that every team in Kentucky hopes to be playing on in December, at WKU’s LT Smith Stadium as part of Bowling Green’s Rafferty’s Bowl. They will then meet Greenwood, which returns to the schedule after a two year hiatus that followed a four year stretch where the teams split 2-2 in their matchups. In mid-September comes the customary rivalry game against Glasgow. Outside of a 4 year span from 1999-2002, the two teams have played every year since 1997. Glasgow has won two straight, including last year’s heartbreaker 7-6. The season closes with the same 4 game stretch as 2012, when the Patriots go through the crucial games against their three district foes. The schedule does them no favors there as they will have to travel to the two teams that are their biggest competition in striving for the district title, Franklin-Simpson and district favorite Warren East. Their regular season closes with another staple of the schedule when they host Monroe County. 2001-2004 were the only years in Monroe County’s history that the two schools did not meet, with the Patriots trailing the series 16-8. Players To Watch Charlie Trapp – RB – 5’7”, 200 lbs – Senior - Trapp will be heavily leaned on to carry the offense, especially as the new quarterback develops. He’s a compact but explosive player. Tanner Mutter – OLB – 5’10”, 190 lbs – Senior - Mutter is the leading returning tackler for the Patriots, with 32 solos and 7.5 tackles for loss in 2012. He was also a team leader in INTs with a pair. He’ll be counted on even more this year to marshal the defense. Wes Cornwell – MLB – 6’1”, 225 lbs – Senior - Cornwell looks the part more than some of the other Patriots with a little more typical height and weight for the linebacker position. Last year he did a little bit of everything, forcing two fumbles, blocking a kick, and hauling in one INT to go with 18 solo tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss.
  10. Series History: Warren East leads 19-14 Series at Warren East: Warren East leads 9-7 In the last decade in this series, homefield has been crucial for the Raiders. They have won 4 of 5 at Warren East, the lone loss a 42-6 beatdown in 2009. The Raiders have won two straight overall following a three year stint of domination by Allen County-Scottsville. The series has a lot of back and forth, and exempting the first six games of the series, the Patriots lead the series 14-13. But it's only close in wins and losses of late, as no game has been a single score affair since 2004. This game will have significant postseason implications. Their last time out, the Raiders were smashed 37-7 by Franklin-Simpson, putting them behind the eight ball in the standings. A loss here would realistically lock them into the 3 seed for the playoffs. A win, and they stay alive in the district title hunt (with a little help needed from the Patriots). The Raiders have a losing record at this point in the year for the first time since 2010. On the other side of the coin, the Patriots enter winners of three straight and four of five, an a win would set up an outright district title game at Franklin-Simpson next week. The Patriots have surged behind RB Charlie Trapp, already a 1,000 yard rusher on the year, and the emergence of QB Jessie Bow.
  11. Inside South-Central Kentucky Football (8-25-13) Week 1 in the area saw a mix of expected results and head turners. -Bowling Green (1-0) was up to their usual dominance in a 48-21 shellacking of highly regarded 4A #4 Lexington Catholic. The Purples gained 461 yards offense and the Hayes to Fant connection accounted for 4 TDs. The Purples look every bit the favorite they are. -Meanwhile Warren Central (0-1) stubbed their toe in their season opener against 4A #7 Madisonville-North Hopkins in a 27-13 loss. The Dragons were undone by 4 turnovers and a pair of blocked punts, with the Maroons scoring 21 points off of those turnovers. -South Warren (1-0) made a statement in a 35-0 victory over Warren East (0-1), the first victory over a Warren County team for the Spartans. All 35 points came in the first half as South Warren took advantage of two bad snaps on punt attempts and absolutely shut down the Warren East offense in the first half. The news for the Raiders got worse from there as their QB Austin Pagel was knocked from the game and may have a broken collarbone. -Glasgow (1-0) won easily 48-0 over Hart County, which was no surprise. Running backs Marquez Trigg and Quentel Bradley combined for 218 yards on just 21 carries as they ran all over the hapless Raiders. -Franklin-Simpson (0-1) had a decent showing in a 25-7 loss to Danville at Campbellsville University. The Wildcats trailed just 13-7 and had possession midway through the 4th Quarter, but a fumble at midfield was returned for the TD to put the game out of reach. -A key interception was the undoing for Allen County-Scottsville (0-1) in their loss to Mercer County in the Rafferty’s Bowl at WKU. Trailing 21-14 just before halftime, Colton Oakes threw an INT that was returned 73 yards for a backbreaking TD. Instead of potentially tying the game, the Patriots were down two TDs and never recovered. -Greenwood (0-1) turned in what may have been the most shocking result of the first week in the area when they were crushed 35-6 by Hopkinsville. It was the largest win for the Tigers since 2009 and least points allowed since 2006. The teams played to a scoreless tie in the first quarter and the Gators led 6-0 in the second quarter, but very little went right from that point on. Greenwood was outgained 308-48 in the second half. -Barren County (1-0) looked to be on their way to a laugher against Metcalfe County as they had a 19-0 halftime lead, but some Trojan turnovers began to make things tough immediately in the third quarter as the Hornets closed the gap to 19-13. Barren County bore down in the fourth, surviving a last ditch drive by Metcalfe County that reached the Barren 26 in the closing seconds. An INT sealed the game. South-Central Kentucky Rankings (8-25-13) 1) Bowling Green vs. 6A Bryan Station at Lexington Catholic (8/24) 2) Warren Central at 4A #5 Boyle County 3) South Warren at 5A Logan County 4) Warren East vs. 5A Barren County 5) Glasgow vs. 3A Garrard County at Danville 6) Franklin-Simpson at 5A #9 Graves County 7) Allen County-Scottsville vs. 5A Greenwood 8) Greenwood at 4A Allen County-Scottsville 9) Barren County at 4A Warren East
  12. Series History: Glasgow Leads 27-7 Series at Allen County-Scottsville: Glasgow Leads 15-2 The Scotties and Patriots have met every year since 2003, but the Scotties have won two straight in the series, both extremely close affairs. Last year the Scotties won 7-6 in a game that saw some key injuries for Allen County-Scottsville. This year it is Glasgow that enters a little banged up, suffering a few minor injuries against rival Barren County last week, causing the Scotties to cautiously maneuver their way to a 28-0 victory in that game. They enter 3-0 ranked very highly in 2A, and are considered a sleeper for the state title. The Patriots have had a more difficult time, but they are coming off their first win of the year, a road victory over Marshall County 35-28.
  13. South-Central Kentucky Football - Top 5 Running Backs So Far A quick look at where we stand for the best runners in the South-Central Kentucky Area. 1) Blue Tisdale, Sr., Bowling Green – 30 Rushes, 222 Yards (7.4 YPC), 1 Touchdown. 5 Receptions, 111 Yards, 1 Touchdown. – The most talented back in the area running behind the most talented line. It’s really not fair to the teams he squares off against. Tisdale lost a chance to boost his stats when Bowling Green’s second scheduled game against Bryan Station was rained out, but is still averaging north of 100 yards per game and boasts a strong YPC. What sets him apart from most of the other backs in the area is he is a huge receiving threat as well. In Bowling Green’s 39-25 win over St. X, he had an 82 yard TD reception while lined up in the slot. 2) Joel Iyiegbuniwe, Sr., South Warren – 16 Rushes, 73 Yards (4.6 YPC), 4 Touchdowns. 2 Receptions, 38 Yards, 1 Touchdown. – Tisdale’s line is a little under because of a lost game. Iyiegbuniwe’s line is a little under because the Spartans quite frankly haven’t needed him to rack up the stats. Thanks to a strong defense, Iggy hasn’t had to face many long fields, so when he breaks his runs he hasn’t had to go too far. What’s most impressive is that he is averaging a touchdown every four carries or every 3.6 touches when you factor in the receptions. Joel has been South Warren’s most impressive player all-around in the young season. 3) Marquez Trigg, Jr., Glasgow – 24 Rushes, 263 Yards (11.0 YPC), 5 Touchdowns. 2 Receptions, 45 Yards. – What a luxury Coach Wood has in Trigg. It’s not every day you have a running back that when you hand him the ball averages gaining a first down. It’s no wonder that he is averaging a touchdown every 4.8 carries. He essentially compiled his stats in the first two games of the year, leaving with a minor injury after only three carries for 18 yards against Barren County, netting a touchdown and “only” 6 yards per carry. 4) Eli Brown, Jr., Warren East – 49 Rushes, 378 Yards (7.7 YPC), 2 Touchdowns. 1 Reception, 8 Yards. – You knew the Raiders were going to have to lean on their bell cow, but possibly they’ve had to do so even more than they thought they would after losing their starting QB in the very first game of the year. He is already almost halfway to his total carries from the 2012 season, in which Warren East played 14 games. Brown has continued to excel in all facets of the game, knocking down opponents from the defensive side as well as running them over on the offensive side. His numbers include a mammoth 202 yard effort against Barren County. 5) Charlie Trapp, Sr., Allen County-Scottsville – 66 Rushes, 410 Yards (6.2 YPC), 5 Touchdowns. 4 Receptions, 23 Yards. – If you go see a Patriot game this year, chances are you are going to see Trapp carry the ball A LOT. He’s currently seeing a carry on roughly 40% of the offensive plays AC/S runs, and still averages an incredibly strong 6.2 yards per carry. Trapp accounts for 45% of all offensive yardage for the Pats right now. The next opponent to hold him under 100 yards rushing on the game, will be the first one. Honorable Mention (Listed Alphabetically) Quentel Bradley, Sr., Glasgow – 50 Rushes, 327 Yards, 3 Touchdowns. 5 Receptions, 86 Yards. – Bradley is the thunder to Trigg’s lightning for Glasgow. Rondell Green, Sr., Warren Central – 26 Rushes, 141 Yards, 3 Touchdowns. 5 Receptions, 130 Yards, 1 Touchdown. – Central has had a rough start, but continue to get reliable play out of their best back. Blake Pillow, Sr., Bowling Green – 13 Rushes, 99 Yards, 3 Touchdowns. 5 Receptions, 82 Yards, 1 Touchdown. – Pillow may actually be the most dynamic weapon the Purples have. If you don’t tackle him before he hits the jets, you won’t. DeMarcus Potter, Sr., Greenwood – Stats Unavailable – Potter has been something of a surprise for the Gators. He transferred from South Warren and has given the Gators a strong presence in the backfield. South Warren is the only team to hold him down so far.
  14. Series History: First Meeting The reeling Patriots are home for the third time in four weeks, but are still seeking their first victory on their homefield. They've dropped a 17-6 decision to Greenwood and were blasted 37-0 by Glasgow in the friendly confines. They'll welcome 2-2 Marion County which enters off a 24-7 win over Woodford County last week. Marion County's losses have come to a pair of BGP ranked teams, Bell County & Bardstown.
  15. Inside South-Central Kentucky Football (10-21-13) -Friday night provided confirmation of something that everyone knew already, that Bowling Green (7-0) is far and away the best team in the area, truly without peers. Warren Central (4-4) managed to stay in touch with the Purples through 1.5 quarters by matching them score for score. It was 14 all at the 9 minute mark of the second quarter, and just 20-14 BG heading under 5 minutes in the half. But the Purples' powerful offense was stopped only once on the night and very rarely slowed, a clip that the Dragons just could not hope to match. In all, Bowling Green racked up a 467-247 offensive yardage advantage, including a Bowling Green single game record 374 yards passing by QB Devin Hayes. The win wrapped up the 5A District 2 crown for the Purples, and they will face the winner of Friday's Ohio County/Apollo game in the first round. It appears that Warren Central will host Hopkinsville in the first round of the playoffs in three weeks. -South Warren (8-1) let loose the frustration of two years of losses to Monroe County out in a flurry of activity at the end of the second quarter of their 53-8 victory over Monroe County. The first quarter was fairly even with the Spartans up just 7-0, and just 14-0 heading under the 4 minute mark of the second. They would score 20 points via two TD runs and a blocked punt TD on defense in just under 3 minutes of gametime to seize control of the game and take a 34-0 halftime lead. The win clinched the first district title in South Warren history, and gives them homefield for at least the first two rounds of the playoffs. The Spartans were fueled by QB Jay Eblen who ran for five TDs and 149 yards as South Warren held a 346-111 advantage in offensive yardage. Monroe County had won the first three meetings in the series by a combined 83 points. -Glasgow (7-1) clinched a district title of their own, going on the road to take a 48-13 victory over Green County. The Scotties led just 13-6 after one, but would score the next 35 points in the game to put Green County down. Marquez Trigg and Quentel Bradley combined for 307 yards on the ground on just 36 carries, while QB Ryan Hinkley threw for three TDs. The effort put Marquez Trigg right at 1,000 yards rushing on the year. In all, the Scotties were the picture of dominance with over 550 yards of offense. -Franklin-Simpson (4-4) continued their late year push with their fourth win in six games, the latest a 50-7 blowout victory over Breckinridge County. The win puts them just one more district win away from their second district title in three years. The first quarter belonged to Chris Holman, as he ran for scores of 23, 20, and 17 yards on the way to a 28-0 first quarter lead for the Wildcats. Holman accounted for 115 yards on just seven carries as part of a night that saw Franklin-Simpson rush for 414 yards. -Before the bye, Warren East (4-4) were the receivers of a surprising 37-7 beatdown by Franklin-Simpson to lose control of their own destiny in the district. They kept themselves in the hunt for the #1 seed by knocking off visiting Allen County-Scottsville (4-4) 28-14 in a close affair at Jim Ross Field. The Raiders seized control early on a pair of Raymond Green TDs The first was a 46 yard strike from QB Antwan Gilbert, the second a 22 yard sweep. The Patriots rallied in the second quarter to tie it at 14 all in the half, and Charlie Trapp's 77 yard TD rush ultimately accounted for nearly 75% of Allen County-Scottsville's 105 yards of offense on the night. RB Antonio Shields put Warren East up for good late in the third quarter on a 14 yard run, then put the nail in the coffin with another TD run with less than two minutes left in the game for the final margin. The Raiders now have to become Patriot fans, hoping that Allen County-Scottsville can knock off Franklin-Simpson next week to create a three way tie atop the district. -Barren County (3-5) clinched the 3 seed in the district - their highest since 2007 in the first year of 5A - with a 53-13 win over Logan County. The win gave Barren County multiple district wins on the year for the first time since 2001, and sets them up for a likely trip to Christian County when the playoffs begin. Chad Eaton was Mr. Everything for Barren County, scoring two TD receptions in addition to throwing for another. Cole Payne also had a pick six against the winless Cougars. -Greenwood (3-5) got just the opponent they needed in Apollo to snap a two game losing streak in a 24-13 victory. Apollo entered the game with just a single win over the year - that over a winless opponent. The Eagles did make Greenwood work for the win, taking a 7-0 first quarter lead and maintaining a 13-10 advantage at the half. But the defense bore down in the second half, holding Apollo to just 33 yards of offense and turning a fumble into a 23 yard TD return for the final score of the game. THIS WEEK -The game with the most postseason implications will be Allen County-Scottsville at Franklin-Simpson. If Franklin-Simpson wins, they will take the district outright. A Patriot win coupled with an all but certain victory by Warren East over Breckinridge County will send it to a three way tiebreaker. The three teams are very close in potential tiebreaker scenarios currently. -Two weeks after being the only team in the area to play, South Warren will be the only one to sit this one out as they prepare for a date with Russellville in the season closer. -There will be a lot of familiar faces when Greenwood meets Bowling Green on Friday. Several coaches on the Greenwood staff were at Bowling Green last year, including HC Chris Seabolt. They'll get a chance to learn how the other half lives in that series, one in which Bowling Green has won all 21 meetings and most have not been close. The Purples have won the last seven meetings by an average of over 46 PPG, dating back to the last time Greenwood came within a single score, a 31-24 loss in 2004. South-Central Kentucky Rankings (10-21-13) 1) Bowling Green at Greenwood 2) Warren Central vs. Logan County 3) South Warren - OPEN 4) Glasgow vs. Metcalfe County 5) Franklin-Simpson vs. Allen County-Scottsville 6) Warren East at Breckinridge County 7) Allen County-Scottsville at Franklin-Simpson 8) Barren County at 4A Taylor County 9) Greenwood vs. Bowling Green
  16. Series History: Allen County-Scottsville leads 13-10 Series at Logan County: Allen County-Scottsville leads 6-5 These teams meet for the first time since 2010 when they were district foes. The Patriots have won six consecutive games in the series, dating back to 2005. They've only played at Logan County twice since then, winning those games by an average of 53.5-6. The Patriots have scored 40 points or more in the last four meetings. There's a good chance those trends continue this week. Though AC/S enters at just 2-3, those two wins have come in their last three games after an 0-2 start. They are also 1-0 in true road games this year. Meanwhile Logan County is winless and have scored in only one of their 5 games, that coming against Franklin-Simpson. They have yet to hold an opponent below 47 points and yield an average of 55.4 PPG. In short.... it don't look good for the Cougars.
  17. Series History: Allen County-Scottsville leads 8-0 Series at Allen County-Scottsville: Allen County-Scottsville leads 4-0 AC/S will be strong favorites to move above .500 for the first time since the end of their 13-1 state runner-up season in 2010. It's already the first time they've been at or above .500 since that point. They've got the perfect team for it. The Fighting Tigers enter winless at 0-6 and have never defeated the Patriots. They are in fact in the midst of a 14 game losing streak. They are coming off a season high scoring effort of 27 against Caverna, almost equaling their total scoring effort for the previous 10 games (30). The Tigers haven't scored on the Patriots in their last two meetings, losing by a combined 95-0.
  18. Inside South-Central Kentucky Football (9-2-13) -Bowling Green (1-0) ran into the only thing capable of stopping their powerful offense – Mother Nature. Their Saturday game against Bryan Station at Lexington Catholic was delayed and then canceled due to rain and lightning. Attempts to reschedule for the following day were unsuccessful. This means the Purples will have two weeks between their season opener and their game against the toughest team on their schedule, St. X. -Another game, another shutout for South Warren (2-0). The Spartans have opened the season on an 85-0 tear after knocking off 5A Logan County 50-0. The Cougars managed only 31 yards of offense against the ferocious South Warren D. Joel Iyiegbuniwe was the standout for South Warren with a pick 6 plus a pair of TD runs. -Warren Central (0-2) looked much improved in their 26-16 loss to Boyle County, but it was a loss nonetheless. The Dragons took their first lead of the year 8-7 towards the end of the first half, and were tied midway through the 4th Quarter at 16 apiece before Boyle pulled it out. Of more importance, the Dragons had several injuries during the game that could potentially give them problems if they turn out to be long term. Depth is not a luxury Warren Central enjoys. -Glasgow (2-0) survived a scare before finally waking up to defeat 3A Garrard County 46-22 in a bowl game at Danville. With just under 4 minutes left in the third, Garrard County led 22-12. That was before a 53 yard Milas Norris TD reception that opened the floodgates. In all, Glasgow scored 34 unanswered in a span of 12 minutes. Quarterback Ryan Hinkley was named the offensive MVP for Glasgow. -It took longer to pull away than Warren East (1-1) might have hoped for, but they ultimately got back in the winning column against Barren County (1-1) in a 32-14 home victory. It was the first victory at home over Barren County for the Raiders since 1996, having lost five consecutive to the Trojans there. But the game was just 14-0 with less than 4 minutes left in the game. That’s when Eli Brown ran it in from 13 yards out for the game clinching score, starting offensive fireworks that saw four touchdowns in a 2 minute span. Eli Brown ran for 190 yards on just 15 carries to lead his team to the victory. He was also key in holding the Trojans to just 72 yards offense and forcing 4 first half turnovers. The win was the first at Warren East for new HC Steve Long, and his first as head coach anywhere since a 36-32 victory over Warren Central on October 19th, 2001. -Franklin-Simpson (0-2) battled for a half against 5A #6 Graves County, as Franklin-Simpson briefly enjoyed a 7-6 lead and were tied at 14 all going into the break. That’s when the other shoe dropped and Graves County rattled off 28 unanswered en route to a 42-14 victory. None of the Graves County scores were shorter than 29 yards, and two of them were 50+ yards. -In a battle of teams trying to pick themselves up after ugly losses in Week 1, it was Greenwood (1-1) that dusted themselves off first with a 17-6 win over homestanding Allen County-Scottsville (0-2). The game was a hard fought battle, with a scoreless first quarter and the difference a single Gator TD from the second quarter by the 6 minute mark of the fourth quarter. The second quarter TD was set up via a bad snap on a Patriot punt, the type of miscue the Gators themselves had suffered the previous week. Greenwood put it away with a 53 yard touchdown run by DeMarcus Potter following a turnover on downs by Allen County-Scottsville. Potter was the star of the night with a 210 yard game with two touchdowns. THIS WEEK This week is highlighted by a pair of rivalry games and one of the most anticipated matchups of the year for the entire state. -Bowling Green puts their 31 game winning streak on the line when they travel to state powerhouse St. X. The Purples have knocked off the Tigers the past two years, yet somehow again find themselves the underdogs in many circles. -South Warren hosts Greenwood in the first matchup between the two schools. South Warren was formed mostly out of Greenwood and has quickly found success that eluded the Gators for many, many years. They squared off against each other in a 7 on 7 this summer that quickly became a more physical affair. If you can’t make it to Louisville for the BG game, I highly recommend this one for the area. -Barren County hasn’t beaten Glasgow since 2008 and hasn’t even really been close since, but it’s always a great rivalry game to watch when these two match up. -One of the great sleeper matchups for the state this week might be DeSales at Warren Central. The Dragons are reeling from two straight losses to open up the season, while DeSales announced themselves as a force to be reckoned with when they knocked off 5A power (and higher ranked than Warren Central) John Hardin this past week 25-20. South-Central Kentucky Rankings (9-2-13) 1) Bowling Green at 6A #2 St. Xavier 2) South Warren vs. 5A Greenwood 3) Warren Central vs. 2A DeSales 4) Glasgow at 5A Barren County 5) Warren East at 3A #9 Monroe County 6) Franklin-Simpson at 5A Logan County 7) Greenwood at 3A #7 South Warren 8) Allen County-Scottsville at 6A Marshall County 9) Barren County vs. 2A #3 Glasgow
  19. Inside South-Central Kentucky Football (11-11-13) -Ho-hum, just the usual first round running clock for Bowling Green (10-0) as they began their march to a third straight state title with a 49-7 victory over Apollo. The win was their 40th consecutive and clinched their 22nd double digit win season in the last 26 years. Bowling Green opened the throttle early to gain the necessary 36-0 lead before the end of the first quarter, then used most of the remainder of the game to play reserves and stay healthy moving forward. It was also senior night for Bowling Green, which honored 27 seniors. They’ll have at least one more home game, and may have up to three. -Warren Central (6-5) received a little more fight from their first opponent, but likewise put the running clock on Hopkinsville in a 48-10 victory. The Dragon offense was rarely stopped, gaining 347 yards, but did have some trouble slowing Hopkinsville’s rushing attack at times. The Tigers actually held a brief 7-6 lead near the end of the first quarter and had a couple of red zone possessions where they came up empty due to turnovers. The game’s turning point came on a pair of turnovers on downs in their own territory late in the second quarter, both of which set up short fields for Dragon touchdown drives. -Continuing the running clock theme, South Warren (10-1) received little challenge from Webster County in a 49-7 win that secured the first 10 win season in the short three year history of the Spartans. QB Jay Eblen ran for three scores and threw for two others, all in the first half, and South Warren gained the running clock by going up 42-0 with 9:11 left in the second quarter. On the negative side, the Spartans did give up 64 rushing yards, by far the most on the year they’ve allowed, though most came against the reserves. That raises their average to 9.64 YPG allowed on the ground. Pick it up guys, you’re slacking. -Glasgow (10-1) picked up a milestone win for the program with their 43-0 shutout. It was their 600th in program history, becoming the 15th school in the state to accomplish this feat. They rank 42nd nationally as well with the honor. As for the game itself, the Scotties went up 36-0 with three minutes left in the first half to start the running clock, and cruised to the shutout victory. Marquez Trigg continued to pull away in his role as lead back for Glasgow with 21 carries for 167 yards, accounting for just under 50% of Glasgow’s total offensive output. -What’s that? Another running clock? The first round of the playoffs are great. Franklin-Simpson (6-4) sent Hopkins County Central to their 26th consecutive loss in a 50-0 decision in Franklin. Hopkins County Central made the playoffs due to the contraction of their district from five teams to four with the loss of Lone Oak. The Wildcats totally dominated the Storm, beginning the scoring with a safety and holding them to only 20 yards of offense. It’s irrelevant and coincidental, but next week will be the third straight week Franklin-Simpson plays a team with Hopkins in its name (Hopkinsville, Hopkins County Central, Madisonville-North Hopkins). The first two were wins of 34 or more – they’ll hope for the same then. -The theme was survive and advance for Warren East (7-4), which was playing without stud RB/LB Eli Brown during their ugly 21-0 victory over Calloway County. The game featured three fumbles and a missed field goal in the red zone for the Raiders as they allowed the Lakers to hang around. It was just 7-0 with under 3 minutes left in the third quarter, but a pair of TDs from returning QB Austin Pagel within a 4 minute span put the game away. Pagel broke his collarbone in the first game of the year and was initially though lost for the entirety of the season, but stepped up with a TD through the air and one on the ground to win the day for East. It isn’t known for certain whether Eli Brown will return this week or at all this year for the Raiders. Nothing official has been released regarding his MRI last week. -Three years, three first round matchups with Madisonville-North Hopkins, three losses for Allen County-Scottsville (4-7), which saw its season end in a 52-28 loss to the Maroons. It was a disappointing end for the Patriots, dropping their last four games by an average of 21.25 PPG. AC/S could not slow the Maroon rushing attack which netted 272 yards on the ground, most of it from Ryan Bowman (10/117) who also had 73 yards receiving. The highlight for the Pats as always was senior Charlie Trapp, who rushed for two scores and hauled in a 45 yard TD reception in his final game in the red, white, and blue. The Patriots improved on last year’s record by a game, but will enter next season still looking for their first winning season since 2010. -It’s baby steps for Barren County (4-7), but a move forward nonetheless for the Trojans as the Trojans closed their season with a 26-12 loss at Christian County. The Trojans won their most district games in 12 years and gained their most competitive playoff result since 21-14 at Scott County in 1994. After falling behind 12-0 after one, the Trojans pulled within 12-6 during the second, but the Colonels scored again to move up 19-6 at halftime and hit a 90 yard bomb to go up 26-6 during the third quarter. A mid-4th Quarter TD by Wininger gave the final margin. -Graves County coach Lance Gregory said Greenwood (3-8) was not a typical 4 seed, and they sure didn’t play like one for most of the night Friday in a season-ending 56-42 loss. The Gators took to the air to remain competitive, with outgoing senior QB Josh Dyer throwing for 200 yards and 4 TDs to keep them in it. Greenwood kept it a game throughout the first half, trailing just 21-14 after a Dyer to Bibb TD with 29 seconds left in the half. But the first backbreaker came then, an 85 yard kickoff return by Marshall. That momentum carried over with Graves getting out to leads of 42-14 and 49-21 before Greenwood attempted an unlikely late comeback that saw them draw as close as 49-35 with the ball and less than 3 minutes left in the game. The 42 points for Greenwood is their most ever in postseason play, topping the 40 they posted against Muhlenberg County in 2009. THIS WEEK -The marquee game would seem to be #7 Glasgow hosting #3 DeSales. It represents what the Scotties hope will be the beginning of a brutal march that would likely require them to beat the top 3 teams to reach the state finals. The first two would at least be in Glasgow. -It’s another year where Warren Central will take the long journey west to take on the district champion Graves County Eagles, the former stomping grounds of Dragon HC Mike Rogers. Last year Graves gave Warren Central all they could handle in a 21-14 win, and the Eagles will be looking to advance to the region finals for the first time ever while Central is looking to make it for the fourth straight year. -South Warren got the better of Fort Campbell in the playoffs last year, and will host the Falcons for the first time ever this week. This is the third straight year the two teams have met in the playoffs, splitting the two meetings at Fort Campbell. -Bowling Green will square off against the last team that has beaten them, hosting Christian County. The Colonels completed an unlikely comeback from 10-0 down late in the game to win 14-10 back in 2010. But Christian County has lost their last 6 at El Donaldson Stadium, and haven’t won there since 1977. South-Central Kentucky Rankings (11-11-13) 1) Bowling Green vs. Christian County 2) Warren Central at Graves County 3) South Warren vs. Fort Campbell 4) Glasgow vs. #3 DeSales 5) Franklin-Simpson vs. Madisonville-North Hopkins 6) Warren East at #8 Owensboro 7) Allen County-Scottsville (4-7) 8) Barren County (4-7) 9) Greenwood (3-8)

Knox (at Edmonson Co.), 12/28 59-66 L #6 Greenwood (at Edmonson Co.) Previous Rank: 9 This Week: 1/3 at #7 Barren County Last Week's Game of the Week - There weren't many intra-region games, but the one that stood out took place in the Caveland Classic at Edmonson County. Monroe County continued a recent surge with a victory over then #6 Greenwood with a 65-57 OT victory. The Falcons did not trail at any point in the second half, but never led by more than 7 over the Gators. Greenwood overcame a late technical foul to tie the game with less than 20 seconds left and even had a heave for the victory that was no good. In OT, Monroe County scored the first 6 points and never looked back. Stock Rising - I've already mentioned Monroe County, which gained wins over 4th Region Top 10 teams Barren County, Russell County, and Greenwood since our last notebook. The win over Russell County was particularly eye opening. Another team that is jumping up the ranks is Warren East. At 10-2, they are the first team in the region to double digit victories and matched last season's 10-2 start through twelve games as the best mark for the Raiders at this point in the last 25 years. They would be even higher in these ranks if not for their two blowout losses, one of which came at the hands of South Warren. Stock Falling - It's a relative fall here since they were rated 4th in the last ranking, but had a notebook come out this time last week, Clinton County may have found themselves as the #2 ranked team in the region with a case for #1. But after getting off to the region's best start at 9-0, they have dropped five straight, thanks in large part to the tough slate at the Republic Bank Classic at Lexington Catholic. Another team sliding down is Franklin-Simpson, which has faceplanted to start the year with a 1-7 record. Their last region loss was to unrated Allen County-Scottsville, which sent them out of the top 10. 13th District Troubles - The 13th District teams find themselves in a slightly unusual situation. The district has typically found itself with a couple of teams in the dark horse mix for the region crown and usually has at least one team to bear the standard of the district as a real threat to win. Last year that was Russellville, but graduation has crippled the Panthers, and they sit at a paltry 3-9 record. The best record in the district? Todd County Central at 3-6. Every team has a losing record and they currently collectively rate as 4 of the bottom 7 teams in the region. Many years they're a tough out, but right now it appears the other districts will be hoping for the 13th come region tourney time.... Region Without a Site - The region tournament is just over 2 months away, and the 4th Region still doesn't have a home for the tournaments. The region has been at WKU every year since 2003 and all but five years in the last 50. But the current site selection plan expired at the close of last season and requires at least 12 schools of the 17 to agree to pass a new one. Per Micheal Compton of the Park City Daily News, just 11 athletic director's have voted WKU's Diddle Arena as the site for the future. If an agreement can not be made, it will go to the choice of the commissioner. In my humble opinion, the tournament belongs at Diddle Arena, but I do concede that there may be financial benefits for it to be played elsewhere. Upcoming Game of the Week 1/3 - #3 Russell County at #4 Clinton County - An easy choice. These two teams have combined for all but one of the 16th District titles since 2005, a trend that doesn't seem destined to stop this year as they are miles ahead of their district mates Metcalfe County and Cumberland County. The pair have split their regular season meetings each of the last three seasons, and provide the first top 5 matchup of the year in the region.

Warren East hosted Logan County on December 2nd and immediately spoiled their fans with a close game with a great finish. Neither team ever gained a double digit lead, and the game was knotted at 66 coming out of a timeout and Logan County in possession. East's Mason Lee blocked a Cougar attempt at a game-winner, and Jaylin Barnett grabbed the loose ball, driving the length of the court for a game winning layup at the buzzer for the 68-66 Warren East win. Honorable Mention - Overshadowed by their football brethren, the Bowling Green basketball team put a real scare into highly ranked Trinity. The Purples jumped out to a 37-28 lead at the half despite missing several players, but a quick start to the second half for the Shamrocks erased the lead. Still, a respectable 62-57 loss to a top team bears mentioning. Cancellations - Unfortunately the narrative of the week for many teams was one of canceled games. Three teams failed to get a single game in (Warren Central, Glasgow, Todd County Central), and seven others played just a single game. Clinton County and Franklin-Simpson were the only teams that had seemingly no difficulty playing games, each getting three in. While the Clinton County Bulldogs might have been happy with that in starting 3-0, the Franklin-Simpson Wildcats maybe would just as soon stayed home, starting 0-3. Early Rankings Movement - All the movement in the top 10 came at the expense of Franklin-Simpson, as the two teams initially rated just behind them - Greenwood and Monroe County - gained victories over the Wildcats to knock them down the ladder. Upcoming Games of the Week 12/10 - #4 Clinton County at #8 Monroe County - Each team gets a tune-up before their district opener. Clinton County has made a habit of strong starts (won at least first five each of last two years) and will look to extend that streak again while Monroe County will look for revenge for last year's 54-39 loss in the All A regional. 12/13 - Warren Central vs. Hopkinsville (at Christian County) - These two teams are the heads of their respective regions and are both considered to be among the 10 best teams in the state. Hopkinsville won the last meeting between these two, 41-37 in 2011.

The two teams traded baskets until Barrett Billingsley put Barren County ahead 57-56 with two free throws. That set up a buzzer beating finish where Gibril Summers nailed a shot with 1.2 seconds left to give the Falcons the win. Honorable Mention - In a game you might see in the Sweet 16, Warren Central held the lead for nearly 3/4 of their game against highly rated Hopkinsville, but a furious Tiger run erased a 13 point third quarter deficit and they finished the last three minutes of the game with a 13-4 run after trailing 66-65 to take the 78-70 win. The Dragons were competing without their starting point guard Rondell Green and could not withstand the full court pressure and aggressive defense of Hopkinsville. Unbeaten Check - There are just three unbeatens left in the 4th Region, two of them in the 16th District. Clinton County has opened up 6-0 against a heavily frontloaded schedule, which follows the 2012/13 season where they started 5-0 and the 2011/12 season where they won their first 10 games. The Lakers are a more modest 3-0, but since their usual December 16th district tilt with Clinton County is being played in January this year, it's not inconceivable that these two teams might escape the calendar year unbeaten. Meanwhile, Greenwood is almost unbeaten by default, having played only one game, a 47-39 win over Franklin-Simpson on December 5th. They haven't suffered any cancellations, they're the anti-Clinton County. While the Bulldogs play quite a bit in December, Greenwood plays an unusual amount in February, with 10 games before the district tournament. Standout Performances - Tavin Lovan, the superstar freshman for Franklin-Simpson, was scorching hot in a 66-50 win over Logan County on Friday night. He had 25 points while shooting 8/10 from the floor, including hitting three treys, and boosted Franklin-Simpson to their first win of the year. Earlier in the week came a bigger performance, albeit in a losing effort, by Jon Michael Brown of Todd County Central. He scored 40 of Todd County Central's 76 points in a 79-76 loss to Russellville. Brown has made a habit of torturing the Panthers, dropping 19, 17, and 28 on them in the three games prior to this monster performance. Upcoming Game of the Week 12/20 - #7 Greenwood at #5 South Warren - Greenwood will emerge from their early season layoff three days prior at Daviess County, but the always entertaining game between crosstown rivals on Friday is the main event. These two schools are generally mirror images of each other since South Warren split from Greenwood three years ago, and their student sections provide as much entertainment as the game itself. Last year South Warren swept the season series only to be denied their first postseason victory ever as part of Greenwood's Cinderella run to the region tournament.

If I ranked beyond the top 10 AC/S would be sitting at 11. They've played five games against the top 10 teams, all losses. In four of them, they've lost by a combined 16 points. One of those was last Tuesday when they hosted #9 Glasgow. The Patriots trailed much of the night before rallying for the lead midway through the fourth. They led by two with less than a minute left when Glasgow used a pair of free throws to send it to OT. And at the end of OT - THIS HAPPENED. A buzzer beater three that dealt AC/S yet another loss to a top team in the region, 57-54. The Patriots will get a quick turnaround to look for revenge, but this time they'll have to do it on the road at Glasgow. Runner-Up GOTW - Barren County fell down the ranks a bit earlier in the year when they took a (then) surprising loss to Monroe County. But the Trojans are capable of great things if the shots are falling, and they were on Saturday night when they hosted #1 Warren Central. It was a very closely contested game that featured no lead larger than 7 and the Trojans led by as much as 3. They led only once in the second half, briefly before the end of the third quarter, but kept the pressure on the Dragons throughout with a mix of perimeter shooting and surprisingly great success in the paint. They didn't wear down against the horde of Dragons sent from Warren Central's deep bench, and in the end the Dragons had to do what they rarely do well - make free throws. They held on in a very high scoring 84-81 decision. It was the most points allowed by Warren Central since December 2010 and the most they've allowed in a victory since December 2005. Key District Games - One district race can be ended on Friday when Clinton County visits Russell County. The Bulldogs knocked off Russell County by 12 just ten days ago, and they can realistically clinch the regular season crown in that district with another victory. Clinton County shot 50% from the field the last time including 43% from the three point arc and were led by the powerful duo of Langford and Dalton to the tune of 34 points combined. The Lakers will have to tighten up on defense to have a shot. Meanwhile Barren County travels to Monroe County, also on Friday. Exactly one month ago the Falcons upset the Trojans in Glasgow and a win on Friday would give the Falcons a stranglehold on the district, needing only a single victory against either Glasgow or Allen County-Scottsville to clinch the #1 seed. The 15th has been one of the tightest races this season (in a good way - compared to the 13th) and the #1 is by no means a guarantee of anything, but it would likely keep them out of the crosshairs of district host Glasgow. Meanwhile, in the 14th..... Upcoming Game of the Week 1/17 - #1 Warren Central at #2 Bowling Green - Yes, it is time for the first of two regular season matchups between the two teams that have dominated the region for the past decade plus. The two have played only three district games this season, but have won those by an average of 17 points. Neither has lost a game in region competition. Coming into the year it appeared that Warren Central might be head and shoulders above the region but the whispers have grown louder in the past few weeks that not only is that not true but they may not even be at the head of the region at all. Those could turn into shouts if the Purples defend their homecourt on Friday. Last year was a significant departure in the recent history of the series in that Warren Central swept the Purples in three games, though two were highly competitive. It was the first sweep in the series by either team since Warren Central did so in 2006/07. The Dragons have won three of the last four games played between the two teams at Bowling Green, but should expect a wild and crazy crowd from the Purple supporters. The costumes they've been wearing to games have been - interesting.

Both teams brought their A game as each shot better than 55 percent from the field for the night, leading to a high scoring 85-76 victory for the Trojans of Barren County. Sophomore guard Wade Coomer led the way for Barren County with 23 points, complimented by Charley McCoy's 19. Glasgow for its part got 22 from senior forward Milas Norris. The loss dropped Glasgow to 0-2 in the district, with road losses at both Monroe County and Barren County. They'll have one more road district game this week at Allen County-Scottsville before closing out the back end of the district slate at home. Somewhat Surprising Result - The game I pegged as the likely game of the week in the last edition was a matchup of two top 5 teams in the region, Russell County at Clinton County. There were signs Clinton County might be better than the Lakers despite my ranks, such as their performances against Monroe County (Clinton County won by double digits while Russell County lost). But the Bulldogs entered having lost their previous five games after a 9-0 start. After jumping out to a 16-5 lead on Russell County, the Bulldogs spent much of the rest of the game holding on as the lead dipped under 5 in the 4th quarter. But a late push gave them a 65-52 victory and established them as the clear front runner in the 16th District. For as much as that's worth - they'll both easily advance to the regional, but hey, bragging rights! Region Site Set - Last week I noted the limbo of the regional tournament site as the region AD's could not reach the 2/3 majority they needed to draft a plan over the summer. Well, in a victory for those who believe WKU gave the 14th District a competitive advantage and those who favor the financial benefits and atmosphere of a high school site, Commissioner Julian Tackett set the site of the boys' regional tournament at Barren County, to be played in early March. It was a position supported by the minority of ADs in terms of voting, as 11 of the 17 had voted for WKU, one shy of the 12 votes needed. In his comments and e-mail regarding the matter, Commissioner Tackett noted that there were three factions of ADs: Those in favor of WKU, those in favor of high school sites, and those that just wanted to play basketball and didn't really care (which included some who were voting for WKU). In the end, WKU may have priced themselves out of the game. This will be the seventh year since Diddle Arena opened in December of 1963 that any region tournament games were played somewhere else and only the sixth time that the finals themselves will not be at the venue. In 1989, 1994, 1997, 2000, and 2003 all games were played at high school sites and in 2002 the opening round games were played at the district winners' home courts. Old Man Winter - In a twist that many regions are experiencing, several games have been canceled, not for snow or ice but bone rattling cold. Barren County was to host Bowling Green tonight in an attempt to gain revenge for a Christmas tourney loss, the highest profile game canceled. It did save the Trojans from having to run a gauntlet that would see them face the top two teams in the region during the same week. They'll have to settle (probably) for hosting #1 Warren Central. Upcoming Game of the Week 1/10 - #1 Warren Central at #6 Warren East - Last year Warren Central lost only two region games, both of which came to the same team in their district. Most years, the easy leap would be that it was Bowling Green they fell to. But no, it was Warren East that humbled the Dragons twice, their second sweep of Warren Central in six seasons. In fact they're the only team in the region to sweep the Dragons in at least two meetings since 2001. That helped catapult Warren East into a share of their first regular season district title since 1998 and the #1 seed. They'll enter this game assured of the best record in the region while thanks to a cancellation it will be Warren Central's first game against a 4th Region team. If East wins it'll clinch their first three game win streak against Warren Central since winning 4 straight from 95/96-96/97. Also on the line is the potential of the first three game losing streak overall for the Dragons since December 2009.
