  1. I truly hope FK doesn't shut the program down and merely hope that this is just another bump in the road.

I, for one, think that the move to 1A will help them tremendously. Then again, it might not.

Most people just laugh at the thought of 6 classes actually hurting some programs, but it has and FK is one of them (by barely being in 2A).

They petitioned the KHSAA to move two years ago and again last year. Were denied both times, even though the school's enrollment had dipped pretty close to the cutoff in 2012 and below it the next year.

  2. I have to wonder: if Fort Knox was, say a top 10 team in Class 2A, would this game have happened? Or, would time off with family still have been of utmost importance?

If Fort Knox was a top 10 team, then that means numbers absolutely are not an issue. If Fort Knox had even the slightest bit of success this year or last, I'd be willing to bet more kids would be willing to give football a chance.

But the Eagles aren't, and the kids don't give a crap about football.

Here's what I don't really get, either: The numbers on both soccer teams are up this season. Not sure if that's in correlation with it being a World Cup year, but the boys' team had over 30 players at the start of the year -- after only having 15-20 last year -- and the girls' team had over 35 -- after only having 12-15 last year. But football took a hit. They had 40-some players at the beginning of last year, but injuries took their toll. They were expecting to have a good chunk of those kids back for this season, but wound up with only two kids -- Escoffery and Irving, who had a lot of playing experience coming back -- after the 3/1 deactivation.

It's a sad situation on post. And I'm not sure how it can be fixed, short of shutting it down.

  3. Then why sign a contract and schedule a game that week?

Once again: It is a district game. There are no contracts for those games. They couldn't schedule it any other time.

Sounds like they should just pack it in and call it a season since they have so much going on. No point in playing the rest of the year.

Yeah, because that'll be a good thing.

  4. As it has been asked many times in this thread, why couldn't the parents wait until after the game to leave town? Or at least give a notice well in advance and ask DeSales to play on Thursday.

Because they, IMHO, don't give a crap about the team. If they did, they would have waited to leave -- but they didn't.

And just spit-balling here, but I'm guessing they couldn't move the game to Thursday since it was played at a JCPS school. Does JCPS still have the rule that teams can't play on the Friday of fall break?

  5. I saw this posted somewhere else.

"Their head coach is pure class. He has had an extremely tough last few weeks and unable to attend practice. I'm not going to give details here because he may not want it released. Let's just say it involved two of his kids and makes you realize football is insignificant. Keep them in your prayers"

Coach Combs is a class act, plain and simple. Tonight would have been his first game back since the Fort Campbell game on Sept. 5. Not going into details, either, but his family's been through hell the last few weeks.

  6. You think the coach who represents the school had no idea before today they weren't going to have enough kids to play? You don't think he knew at any point this week when having practice? You really believe that? It wouldn't have changed anything, but he should have had the courtesy to let us know earlier in the week.

Coach Combs knew, and so did Coach Davis. The two had talked earlier in the week, when Combs was sure they'd have at least 17 or 18 kids to play. That number obviously changed.

Combs said he tried to get in touch with Davis sooner today, but they were in a pep rally at the school and weren't reached for about 30 minutes after Combs found out.

  7. Look. I'm 100% for not playing if you only have 12. I'm saying that had they not taken off for break they would have had 33. I thought you assumed they only had 12. My mistake.

That 33 is a big misnomer.

Some kids have quit and others are injured. On Thursday, they were down to 15 players who would've played tonight at DeSales. Not great, but it's better than 12. However, one of the parents took two more players and one of their friends -- who is on the team -- on vacation, and didn't tell Coach Combs or the administration until very late this afternoon that they weren't going to be in town for the game.

It sucks for DeSales that the game got cancelled, but it was in the best interests of Fort Knox to not play tonight.

  8. Since when was the facemask considered the crown of the helmet? head was up, face mask to the chest, clean hit. The game is almost a joke because too many people are afraid of being hit. Too many rules put into the game. You know what you are getting into when you play football. Period. Before we know it will be illegal to hit a QB and flags will be worn on hips to prevent injury.

His facemask didn't hit Roethlisberger's chest. You can clearly see the Ravens' guy lower his head and the crown of his helmet is planted in Roethlisberger's chest -- which is why the ref threw the flag. He led with his head, which is a big no-no nowadays.

  9. Even worse.

Why would the paper let an intern even write any type of opinion piece in the first place without putting about 3 sets of eyes on it?

Either way this goes... either the newspaper or the Bell staff should have some serious repercussions from this. My suspicion having not seen the video is the newspaper is in a whole heap of manure.

Not defending what was written, but ...

I'm guessing the newspaper doesn't have "three sets of eyes" to look over everything. Newspaper staffs across the country are shrinking, and it wouldn't surprise me to know this paper only has a handful of people on staff -- total.

Without seeing the rest of the clipping, I can't tell if it's in sports or an opinion page.

  10. Before anyone thinks I'm implying something with this thread, I'm not. Combs is one of the good guys out there, and his staff is solid.

I was just curious as to what folks thought about Fort Knox's situation which, as gchs pointed out, changes from year to year. I don't think that's something I could deal with as a head coach. It's hard to build anything when you don't know who's going to return and who you'll be missing every year. I know they had one player whose dad got PCS'd a few years ago before the season even ended -- and he was a senior.

So please, don't make this into anything it's not.

  11. Something I want to try with y'all: a what-if game, where I list a scenario and you tell me how you would handle things.

Up first: Fort Knox. The Eagles are 0-5 and have only been competitive in one game (not counting the weather-shortened game against Elizabethtown). They've been held to one touchdown or less in their other four games and their single wing attack isn't moving the ball very well.

They've got a couple of good players in Escoffery and Irving, the only two kids back from last season, but had to start five freshmen on defense against Bardstown last week.

Fort Knox is dropping to 1A next year, which should help some. They'll be in a district with Berea, Bethlehem, Campbellsville and Caverna.

What if you were in charge? What things would you want to change and what things would you want to keep? How would you get kids to come out for the team and keep them on the team?

  12. Wondering just how solid this years Jaggerless Dragons are considering they took at beat down 33-0 at the hands of Marion Co and barley slip by a very young Larue Co team. Time will tell. Should be a great ball game. But like I said before the Eagles will have their hands full trying to win at Dragon stadium.

The Brewer kid is pretty dang good. I don't think he's near Jaggers' level, but he's good for a sophomore.

  13. They are looking for a reason, and ATL said it boils down to W's and L's.

Hager is a good guy who has been fighting an uphill battle. I hate to see them let him go like this as the timing is horrible. I feel for those kids too.

Who will step in as the new coach? An assistant as interim?

If it truly is about wins and losses, why fire him two games into the season -- and especially coming off a victory? Doesn't add up.

  14. The KHSAA pushed the season back a week in, IIRC, 2005 or 2006 in response to the heat. I remember the heat being really bad those years, when it seemed like it was pushing 100 just about every day -- and even higher when the heat index was factored in -- and KHSAA responded by moving the start of the regular season back a week.

I don't see why they can't do that again, unless it has to do with scheduling conflicts with Western. Then, I could see them not being willing or even able to move the start back another week.

  15. I'm saying...these ladies have been playing together so long it would take her a year to speak the language.. She would make the team on talent no doubt, but the "MUDD" is good and thick.

Just like our football team has one of the best backs in the state, and we can't get him to back to back practices...

Do you have nothing better to do than to pick on teenage kids?
