  1. Timmerman SHOULD be the starter, as Erpenbeck just isn't strong enough. But Timmerman kind of reminds me of Pat Van Sant, which means he probably will be utilized elsewhere where he is needed more. Erpenbeck started last year one game because Isler was injured, and Young had been having troubles. The right guy was the QB for CovCath the past two years, and if Erpenbeck had been THAT good, I think he probably would have been given the opportunity. He just wasn't, so let's not get ahead of ourselves referring to him as a mini brett favre. lol.

Nothing like putting high expectations on a HS kid, by comparing him to Brett Favre :p

I know last year he was not in the QB mix early because he was spending most of his practice time on the defensive side of the ball. Early on he shared time with Timmerman at the JV level, but as Timmerman's PT at LB went up he played less and less JV ball, leaving Erpenbeck as the only JV QB.

I see no use in arguing who should have played last year, and who shouldn't. The reality is that now Erpenbeck is by far the most experienced returning QB. The new coach will have to determine if he is the right "type" of QB for his system. Timmerman defintely has the arm strength to compete at QB, but his lack of experience at QB could be an issue.

One thing is for sure, if one of these two end up being the QB, toughness will not be an issue. I am a big believer having the QB be tough both physically and mentally, sets the tone for the entire team.

That toughness both mentally and physically is what CovCath needs to return to their winning ways. That type of attitude at the QB position can be contagious for the entire team. Not that I am comparing them, but that type of attitude is what makes the Brett Favre's, the Ben Rothlisberger, the Tony Guidugli's the successful QB's on successful teams. I will take that attribute in my QB over a slightly stronger arm anytime.

  2. Dave Brossart is a good man. He has at least one great coach that would follow him from last year at Cov Cath. Just because things didn't work out for him in Park Hills, does not mean he wouldn't be a good fit. Coach Brossart is a very hard worker and I believe will land on his feet and do a great job wherever he ends up next year. I don't know Coach Rice, but Newport would benefit from the hire of Dave Brossart.

I agree. In addition I think Newport is similar to Finneytown, in demographics as well as talent level. I think that Brossart at Newport would be a good fit.

It maybe a very good move for both. Don't know the other candidates so this is in no way a shot at them. I do know that Newport has the talent to be a serious contender in the 2a district. I think it will be challenge to knock of NewCath, but I can see that rivalry returning to a very competitive game year in and year out.

  3. CovCath has had a very challenging year. Injuries, Illness and Inconsistent play have all be part of the struggles. A couple things that are most disappointing is the inconsistent support that the team has received from the "Crazies", and the lack of team cohesiveness. People blame players, coaches and even the administration. Truth be told all probably share some in the blame.

The saddest thing is that the even the families have had a part in the poor season. They post on BGP, and criticize players and coaches, thinking they are hurting no one because they are anonymous. When in reality they end up hurting the team they support. Unfortunately players and coaches both read what is written about them. They let the comments of the family members affect the team chemistry.

I just hate to see the enjoyment of HS basketball be lessoned by hard feelings from players and family members, because of some of the anonymous comments made on forums such as this.

The reality is in 20 years you will have a hard time remembering the individual wins and losses. However, the team spirit, the friends the special bond that is HS sports is all that sticks with you. Enjoy it while you can, don't let small minded people's comments take away from this great experience.

Friends and family members, please remember the feelings of the teenage players, their siblings as well as their parents. Calling out individual players leaves hard feelings and hurts team chemistry. Even if you are "anonymous", people know those people close to the program, and it hurts them.

  4. Isler is the only consistent free throw shooter they have. He has the highest FT percentage on the team I believe. Ives is probably the next best, and after that it's really just not good. Luke will make one or two and then bomb the rest. Wellbrock, it's just said. People laugh in the stands, and he laughs too, but it really is not all that funny.

That is by far the best part of Isler's game. He is very consistent from the charity stripe. What's really scary, is if Thelen were healthy Isler probably would not even be in the line up to shoot free throws. The trade off Thelen gives you with the rest of his game would probably make up for it. Not sure what Thelen's Ft percentage was, but my guess is it is not as good as Isler.

Maybe if Thelen were healthy they would be able to sub Isler for Wellbrock late in games to avoid the current situation.

The reality is that they are not talented enough offensively right now, to not take advantage of every scoring opportunity.

  5. He's being recruited as a pitcher. I've always questioned posters who say how fast a kid throws. However, a college coach said that Ice hit about 88 a few weeks ago in a throwing session. I'll go with the coach on that one. They like a 6'2 or 6'3 thick kid with strong legs that can throw. I'm guessing that they feel with refinement and year-round work he can become a 90+ guy.

Unfortunately raw stats are very important to both Major college and pro scouts. Years ago I worked with a company responsible for creating a database of High School, Jr.College and College players. The Database was heavy on Raw stats, Height, Weight, Speed home to first, Speed first to third, Speed in the 60, arm Strength rating 1 -5 etc.

For Pitchers the KEY stat was speed, next was a rating 1 - 5 on control.

There were half dozen other ratings 1 -5 on several things including work ethic.

There were also several fields for scout impressions, comments and "personal concerns".

The database (don't know if it is still used, company no longer exist as it was) was designed by MLB.

This was in the early 90's so maybe things have changed, but I doubt it.

How many times have you seen great high school talents never get a chance with the big boys, because they were 2 inches to short, or a half step to slow. Right or wrong those RAW stats are the first thing that attract attention. Not saying that kids who are lacking in those categories won't get looked at but it becomes less likely.

As for Isler, if he throws 88 consistently then I agree he is a definite D1 prospect. I didn't realize he threw that hard, I thought he was more in the 82 - 83 range.

  6. Isler

As a Pitcher or a position player?

Unless things have changed speed was always required for the D1 and Pro scouts. Occassionally that is not requirement, especially for pitchers and catchers. But usually they want at least decent speed, even for 1st baseman.

    How fast does Isler throw?

I know he is a very good HS hitter, but didn't know he had the speed and defensive skills to be a D1 player. D2 yes, D1 ????

  7. I would have to disagree. I doubt Maile is the number 1 CATCHER for his class. Hitting wise he would without a doubt in the running for 1 I would think. But catching, no. Possibly in the state, but nationally...

Regardless of all this, and whether or not they indeed do take state [Will have to get past region first!], this is a special group of boys. How many teams have 2 D1 caliber kids, possibly three with Darner, on their team this year?

Who is the 2nd D1 prospect?

  8. Fred Bernier was the coach before Coach Ray.

This is off the CovCath Web Site, so I assume this is correct.

  9. I agree Maschinot and Thelen had good games. Even though they lost by almost 20, it may have been CovCath's best game since the Louisville tournament.

I think it's time for Thelen to take over the starting role. He can score, he rebounds well and he didn't back down from Pittman at all. True Pittman is a much better athlete, and did out jump Jake several times, but Jake battled. Some of the other big's did not, they spent more time laying on their backside.

Even though Wellbrock didn't score much, I thought he battled as well. Maile does sometimes force shots, but the offense still revolves around him. If he feels more confident that the big guys down low will finish, I think he will starting getting them ball.

I think the lineup should be Maschinot, Ives (played pretty well), Maile, Wellbrock and Thelen. I think Heimbrock, Counse (sp) and Wilson should be the top eight. Robinson gives a big defensive spark as well. That team gives the best combination of offense and defense. I think you gear your season towards the HC game. If you don't beat HC, its Holmes in the district, and it would take a miracle to beat them. I think this team is capable of beating HC and Beechwood, if they play well.

If Pauley can come back, I think now you can compete with most teams in the Region on a good shooting night. Unless Mitch Shover returns, and to his last season form, I don't think there is any chance at knocking off Holmes, even if they have an off night.

With that said, I think your goal is secure the 3rd seed, win the 1st district game and then hopefully get hot in the regionals. I would rather face Holmes in the Regional final, than the district opener.

  10. The problem wasn't that they were losing games. That is not why mud starting getting slung. And the "Park Hills Mafia" is not why he is gone either. It's just best for both parties.

That's not what the 50 + players at lifting think.

Their very upset. They don't want to start over again. They have bought into the program, and wanted Coach B there. They wanted to fight back and bring CovCath back to is prominence. Now they are just a "transition Class" for the next coach.

This is not a plus for the kids in the program. They all have to start over, just as they did 2 years ago.

As a parent of a player, very few inside the program especially the Senior's to be are happy with this decision.

  11. Sorrell shot the ball well. He had a couple three's but once he missed two in a row, you could see his confidence go down.

Ives looked solid handling the rock but still struggled some to break the press. He looked very quick with the ball though and IMO is the best PG Covcath has. Him and Shover in the backcourt will be a very tough tandem to contain if they can feed off one another and not just jack up three's every time they touch the ball.

Counts played well but was somewhat a ghost at times. I don't remember him shooting too much. He will be able to contribute off the bench though. Physical kid who should get a few offensive boards and put backs if he learns to use his body down low.

I think the biggest think CCH needs to learn is that they can't live and die by the three this year. They really aren't good enough to do it, but if they penetrate, which IMO is their strength, they can be a very tough team to beat for ANYONE.

You are truly a HS sports Fan!! At the Highlands/JC in Paintsville game on Friday, and then at the CovCath bball Scrimmage in Louisville on Saturday.

You should get some kind of frequent driver points for that, 9 1/2 hours of windsheild time in a 24 hour period, thats impressive!

  12. their QB hides the ball really well

I agree JC does an excellent job of keeping the ball out of sight. This is where the Home Field advantage is greatest, not the crowd, not the long drive, but the dark colored home uniforms. It is a BIG part of their O, to disguise the ball's location. If they had to wear White, I think it would significantly less effective.

I think JC will have some success running the ball against Highlands. They run the belly option as good as I have seen. However, I do not think JC's defense will be able to stop Highlands running or throwing. I think JC will keep it close for a half, but unless Highlands puts the ball on the ground 4 or 5 times (and loses it), I can not see JC being able to pull off the upset.

    I predict a 38 - 14 type of score.

I forgot to mention I predict at least 1 special teams score for the Birds as well.

  13. Brandon Roller will be SORELY missed. He IS one of the TOP LB's in the STATE. But LB is a strong area at HHS. Blake Newman, Travis Alford, Jake Turner, Teddy Abner, Mr. Consistency-Michael Laber, Nick "the STICK" Martin, David Hogue, possibly Oliver Head or even Josh Conner provide a wealth of LB talent and experience to step up and shine. TE will be ably manned by Newman, Hogue, and big #86 Kyle Welz. Brandon...it hurts deeply to be without you, and NOBODY feels as bad about it as you do (outside of Mom and Dad). But I have every confidence that you will be back next year terrorizing offenses and D-backfields the way ALL ROLLER'S DO and HAVE DONE!! God speed, young man!

That is a shame. What kind of injury is it? Hopefully not to severe. I played against his father, a great competitor and a good guy.

  14. If I am not mistaken Ryle crossed mid-field once due to penalty until the 4 th quarter .Ryle scored with 1:12 left in the game.21 - 0 at the half.# 42 for BW had a big game along with # 40 and the rest of the Tigers,Great effort on both sides of the ball.

Does this put them in the championship even if they slip up against New Cath next week ?

Who are some of the key players from this year's Frosh Squad?

They have had an impressive run. The Championship game between them and Highlands should be interesting.
