At least 10 post will start out .. " I don't want to blame the loss on the officials..but"

At least 5 Highlands bball threads will end up talking about Highlands Football

Any others with predictions for 2010?

  3. I haven't seen Brossart this year, but they are usually a very disciplined, tough minded and scrappy. The remind me very much of St. Henry. If CovCath is patient, I think their inside game could allow them to dominate. If they fall in love with the 3, I think they will be in for a battle. It's a good barometer game for both Schools. Even though they are in separate Regions, it is a good test for how both schools might do heading into the New Year and their respective No. KY schedules.

  4. This (bold) is a recipe for inconsistent results. Point guard is the most important position on the floor. You rarely, if ever, see a good team without a good PG running the show. The bigs can't do their thing if there isn't a PG to control tempo and get the offense into their sets.

I don't disagree. I think that is why you have seen the inconsistent play so far. Unfortunately I don't think they have that one great point guard. Maschinot I think has the most potential, but he also has been inconsistent.

I do believe they can go by committee and still be successful, they just have to accept their roles. While I agree that is not the best formula ( one strong PG would be), there is enough talent/potential among the group to make it work.

I am just trying be realistic with what I have seen so far from the team. Perhaps Evans/Pauly/Maschinot will step up and be that PG they need, but so far they haven't shown that. At some point you have to recognize what you are and build from there, instead of trying to force feed something you are not.

  5. Not sure if it was Coach Gillen or Coach Prosser, but one of those stated something like this:

November and December is about finding out who you are, January and February is about becoming the best of who you are, March is for finding out if your best is good enough!

I think CovCath has found out who they are. They are a team that will depend upon the post players, Thelen, Wellbrock and to a lesser extent Connelly to score. They are a team that will be an average at best shooting team. They will rely on Wilson or Evans to be the deep threat ( seems like one or the other is on, but very seldom both) and they will be a team with a PG by committee. If they play strong defense and don't turn the ball over they can play with anyone. If they struggle in those areas they can lose to anyone.

The old guy stated it well, they need to have more consistent and balanced scoring in the post. Teams will find a way to stop Thelen, especially when they have more than 24 hours to prepare. They need Wellbrock and Connelly to be more consistent offensive threats, and they need to avoid those 3 - 5 minute stretches where they seem to lose their mind, both offensively and defensivley. It seems like in every game they "check out" in either the 3rd or early 4th quarter.

For them to be a serious contender they need to improve the Free throw shooting. They are not talented enough to be a 60 -65% free throw team. They need that to be above 70%. I know that is easier said than done, but I also believe that is something that you can improve on. It's tough to get faster or stronger in January and Feb. but you can definitely improve your Free throws.

Finally they need to individually and as a team "buy in" to what they are ask to do. If you are ask to be the defensive stopper, and give up scoring opportunities, or to be a 10 minute role player instead of a starter, buy in.

Talent wise this is not one of the better CovCath teams, but if they play their roles, and improve in a few areas I can see them being a 16 -17 win team. I think they will be the 2 seed in their district, and possiby winning a game or two in the Region.

  6. Let me assume what was meant.

D1 college football takes an unreal amount of time and toll on your mind and body. ND , with its assumed higher academic expectations, is even more demanding. Not every kid who goes to college to play football wants that rigorous schedule. Many colleges have strong degrees even if they're not as strong as ND. Some players would then compromise.

    Perfectly understandable.

    Very well stated.

I in no way was slaming Miles. He is a great kid and an excellent Football player. He however does not love the academic side of school, neither did I. For you to play D1 at schools like ND, Stanford or Duke, you had better love football, but you also better love an intense academic challenge. All I was trying to say, was that Miles top choice is probably not an intense academic challenge.

I had opportunity to play at Dartmouth. I was so intimidated by the huge academic requirements, I never gave it serious consideration. So please don't take my statements as a negative comment about Miles or his character.

  7. As usual, VOR makes a very good point. In recent years, I've been shockingly surprised by the attitude of some parents in the Cov Cath community towards some of the coaches (past and present)...and I'm not just referencing the basketball team.

When these young men see grown adults treating coaches with disrespect, then why would they ever give them the time of day? Even for as much tenure as Coach L has, when he came in after Coach T, he brought a different style, and that style has never been accepted by many of the Cov Cath basketball parents in particular. By choosing to treat Coach L as they have, these parents have not had nearly the impact on the mindset and effort put forth by Coach L as much as they have spoiled the mindsets and efforts put forth by their sons.

One bad apple can spoil the whole bunch.

While I agree it starts at home, if the coach allows the disrespect, it is now his problem as well.

I think 90% of the people will support you if you are fair and consistent with discipline. If he would have benched the player who refused to come out of the game, and not put him back in, win or lose he would have earned respect.

While you want to win every game, the nature of Ky HS basketball is that with the exception of district Seeding games, the rest of the regular season is to get better for the post season. More importantly it is part of the process of developing team work and instillng the values you want the young men to have in life.

  8. Lets all agree to disagree. The fact of the matter is HHS is ranked and not one of us can change this. For HHS it is a great thing to boast about. For the naysayers, they can can moan all they want and nothing changes. HHS is one of the winningest teams all time in the NATION folks and that is going to add to their case. By the way, Male is also top ten in this category. All season long I have seen posts after the USA 25 poll from around the country about this team and that team being great and should be ranked , etc....

When you have a team win three state titles in a row, one loss in four years and playing up in class, somebody will take notice. And it doesn't hurt if you get a little PR from some or a coach who is as proud of his program and not afraid to tell the world. Congrats BIRDS on a great season and the wonderful memories. Take the ranking, whatever it is, and be proud.

Not a Highlands fan, in fact the two schools I route for/Support are CovCath and NewCath, arguably Highlands biggest rivals the past 30 years.

As I always say you can love em or hate em, but you have to respect them!

This just makes you respect them more. I think that is what this ranking shows, that people respect and admire the success this team/program has achieved.

I hope they are ranked in the top 10 again next year in September. That will make it all the more exciting if the Colonels can knock them off!

  9. While I agree that Highlands is definitely the favorite in 5a in 2010, and also probably the #1 team in NKY, the gap will not be anything like the past 2 years.

Love 'em or hate em' you have to respect them. They usually simply re-load instead of re-build. Even though they bring a lot of experience back, I can't see them simply replacing Roller, Collinsworth, Bardo, Grubbs, Drennan, Buten etc.

I think until someone beats them they have to be the #1 team, but I also think that Ryle, Covcath, and Dixie all have a chance to knock them off.

This year they had no chance!

  10. If CovCath can find a QB, they will do very well.

They will be very deep a running back, and return who I believe will be the best reviever

    in NKY, in Connelly.

They must replace both O and D lines, but that can be done.

Defense will be a question, but QB is the key .

QB and Dline are the big holes to fill. In addition they lose some great Senior leaders like Garnick, Geisen, Couch, Robinson etc.

On offense the following players either started or saw significant varsity action this past season:

    Thaxton OL

    Way OL

    Connaughton OL

    Kuderer OL

    Halpin OL

    Schaefer RB

    Slabaugh RB

    Gray RB

    Connelly WR

    Best WR

    Massey WR

ON Defense (either Started or played significant Minutes)

    Jones DL

    Timmerman DL

    Henderson DL

    Sizemore DL

    Connaughton DL

    Neinaber LB

    Chailand LB

    Clark LB

    Guess LB

    Ritter DB

    Connor DB

    Cosby DB

    Batts DB

The QB is the big question, and perhaps the injury situation of several good athletes. If Torebeck, Manis, and Wendling can return that would be a huge boost to next year's team.

With the RB talent in the program, next years version of the spread may be much more run oriented. If the QB can throw 12 -15 times a game, enough to keep teams honest, I think the offense will be fine.

The key may be defense. Hopefully playing so many soph's late in the season (5 starters on D ) pays off next year. If they can stop the run better next year, the Colonels could be very good.

  11. Last I heard his health situation had not been resolved. If this lingers past the Christmas break, I would doubt very much that he comes back. If his health improves I could see him coming back one more year, with the talent they have coming back.

Who are the names you are hearing? I always thought the Dan Wagner, the D-coordinator for the last eight or so years was a shoe in.

  12. Don't claim to be a BBall expert, but why is CovCath using their guards down on the block on Free Throws, and keeping Wellbrock, Thelen and Connelly out by the 3 point line?

Whatever happened to a high low post offense? Thelen was the only offense the entire 2nd half. Wellbrock who had 16 points and 10 boards against Lexcath spent most of his time on the offensive set outside the 3 point line. CovCath did not utilize their height advantage at all.

A very disappointing effort from the players on the court, and the coach on the sidelines.

Colonel Crazies were the only Covcath contingent on top of their game!

  13. I guess it depends on your agenda.

W/Ls have always been a terrible way to evaluate teams including last year's team. I'm on record as saying Coach Brossart got one more win out of them than most expected.

    08:

    Mooney, Elder, Holmes, North Hopkins

    09:

    Ryle, LexCath, Campbell Co, LaSalle

Holmes and North Hopkins were not very good in 08.

Campbell was not very good in 09.

    Dixie was better in 09.

    BW/NCC were better in 08.

The schedule from a W/L perspective is about a wash.

I Agreed The biggest difference is in the score differential in the losses.

Some may say a loss is a loss, I partially agree but lets look at the details.

However in 2008 here are the scores of the losses:

    Mooney 57 - 0

    Elder 56 -7

    Highlands 61 - 0

    North Hopkins 17-14

    Beechwood 35 - 21

    St. X 56 - 0

    2009 Losses

Ryle (no where near as good as Mooney)

    34 -14

LexCath (much better than North Hardin)

    23 -17

Lasalle ( no where near as good as Elder )

    35 - 44

Highlands (IMO better than the 2008 version)

    36 -7

St. X ( about the same as 2008)

    63 -7

Even though I think the 2008 version of CovCath had more individual talent, I think the 2009 version played better as a team. That is in no way a shot at the coaches, just my opinion on how they played. So IMO CovCath is not a good example of NKY teams being down or up in 2009.

  14. What chant was out of line?

I am old school, the kid was simply trying to put the focus on himself, instead of the team. Whether or not he was dis-respecting Covcath or not, there is no place for that in HS sports. I am sure he is a good kid, and that he meant no ill will towards CovCath Players, but the bottom line is he was showboating.

I believe the kid is a Soph. as well. He is very talented. It drives me crazy when kids feel they have to do that type of demonstration to be noticed. I guarantee, more people of both my generation and his, would respect his hustle and athleticism than his goofy pre-game demonstration.

I don't know if Lexcath plays at Holmes, but if they do, and he does the same thing, I have a feeling his first trip into the lane will be a memorable one.

  15. Doug Losey 1980, 1981 9th Region Player of the year. His Varsity record was something like 16 -1 with an ERA under 1.00. He hit over .380 both Jr. and Senior year, with around 5 or 6 HR's each year.

I recognize the offensive numbers are not as high as some of the more recent ones, but in that stretch of the early 80's he was in the top ten in all offensive categories (except Steals) and top 3 in all Pitch categories.

Went on to play at EKU.

  16. I know what the official rule states, but how is the Holding call enforced down field?

It seems like there are many times that WR and lead blockers have their hands on the shoulders of DB's, many times grabbing cloth and no Hold is called. It seems if that same situation occurs with an o-lineman having his hands outside on the shoulder pad they call a hold. I always tought the hands had to be inside the shoulders or a hold would be called.

  17. Baseball is such a difficult sport to compare one athlete to another. Obviously all of the young men mentioned on here are having fantastic years!

The stats for Mr. Connor and Mr. Isler are very impressive. The fact that they both are doing it on the mound and at the plate, makes me think they should be the front runners for the award.

Not that this should be the deciding factor, but Isler only has 1 K in 81 AB's, that is very impressive. Especially considering the competition that he has seen. I used to think that his future was only in pitching, but that one stat tells me he may have some PA's in his college career.

Heck he even has 2 SB's. If someone would have told me that Zach would have more stolen bases than strike outs I would have told them they were crazy!
