  1. The only thing good about 16th region refs is that they leave quickly after the games....unfortunately they do come back.........

As a frequent observer of 16th region basketball, I dont have the same disdain for officials as you. Granted, if I were coaching there are some I would prefer over others but you seem to cast a broad blanket over them all as being terrible. I just dont see it. Would you care to list some that you have seen and what your specific complaint with each?

  2. Sounds like the coach could use some sensitivity training........he is routinely hurting his opponents feelings.........I think after a good talking to he would realize the importance of letting his opponents leave the gym with a warm fuzzy feeling of only being beaten by 15 or 20.

What would happen if EC took every starter out and played only subs after halftime of these blowouts? They lose conditioning......thats what........then when a close game makes it necessary for them to play 4 quarters they then have a increased chance of injury.

  3. What system can work for Russell this year? Who knows! I don't claim to have the answers, but I have begin to observe "the natives are restless" with the coaching there

I have to assume you mean they are "restless" with the middle school, freshmen, and JV coaches.........Isnt this where most of the current roster would have been playing the past couple of seasons? Is it the Varsity coaches sole responsibility for player development as they come up thru the ranks? I am certainly not casting stones toward the coaches at those levels. In fact, I dont even know who they are. I am simply making a point that it would be silly for the "natives" to take out their frustrations on the Varsity coach in what can only be described as a rebuilding year.

  4. Please read above, I stated I do not want any player lost. My son is in his senior season, was the starting center for LCA last year, and was looking forward to a good senior season but in during "practice" before the season started, tore his patella tendon in his knee, just jumping up for a pass with no one around, now we hope he can come back for a hand full of games if he heals. So NO I do not want a player EVER lost for ANY reason. Not the purpose of this post.

I understood your post completely and I agree with you. I didnt intend to insinuate you were advocating rough play or anything........I was simply offering an explanation as to why officials may be quick to make the held ball call......

  5. I dont think the fear of injury comes from the held ball itself but more from players losing their temper during such action and swinging an elbow or fist. You worry about a team being "penalized" by losing possession but what about a team losing a player for the remainder of the game and an additional game because they lost their temper during a loose ball and got ejected for a punch or flagrant elbow? Seems to me a quick whistle is good game management.

  6. From the NFHS Rules........

Rule 4 Sec 25 Held Ball

    A held ball occurs when:

Art 1... Opponents have their hands so firmly on the ball that control cannot be obtained without undue roughness.

Art 2... An opponent places his/her hand(s) on the ball and prevents an airborne player from throwing the ball or releasing it on a try.

I think the quick whistles are simply a precaution to prevent the undue roughness.

  7. Did anyone see this game in person?

105.7 made it sound like the game should have been won by East Carter as they lead virtually the entire contest until final minute; however, they only shot the ball 4 times in the 4th quarter. How do you just shoot the ball 4 times in a quarter anyway? Is that stat even accurate or was it an error? Did the Raiders try to put it in the freezer too early or did the Eagles simply put the clamps down on them? Whatever the case that was a good win for Fairview. Another game that supports that Elliott is head and shoulders above all in the region with 5 or 6 good teams stacked behind them.

East was down by 10 in the first half but fought back and did lead most of the second half. I cant say for sure how many times they shot the ball in the 4th but they didnt take many. They ran the offense but just didnt look to score......???

  8. Cumberland beat Tates Creek in the first round, a solid team from the tough 11th Region, then beat Franklin Simpson (the top ranked team in their region in the cats pause yearbook) so they didnt have a cake walk. Having said all I have said, I do realize and admire what a special team Elliot county is, but I do believe their lack of an inside game could hurt them against a team with a really good inside game and quality guard play to handle their pressure, along with a track record of playing great defense. These 3 things are what Cumberland is known for, so I think it would be a great matchup. Good luck to the Elliot bunch also, they are truly a fun bunch to watch!

While they may not have huge bodies across the front line, I think their inside game will surprise you. They have a several good leapers, they block out and they have multiply players crash the board.

  9. IMHO I think the physical nature of the girls game in the 16th is now beginning to be on par with the rest of the state. Ask coaches of teams that often travel to Lexington/Louisville and see what they say. The game has been pretty physical in those areas for a long time. Its not in our teams (16th Region) best interest to have every bump called here then go play in big time tournaments or state tournaments where the physical play is part of the game.

  10. When accused of running up the score, I once heard Steve Spurrier say, "Its not my job to stop my offense."

As for EC leaving starters in too long......well they only dress what 8 or 10? If you dont have a guard to replace a guard do you insert a unskilled ball handler to run your offense just so you dont hurt your opponents feelings? Dont the subs you insert have just as much right to run their offensive sets and try to improve?

  11. bust- Fairveiw

    suprise- Bath

    I could picture that.

I am not sure about Fairview..I dont think most people believe they will have much anyway, but Bath will be better than expected.[/Q

Fairview has more than you think. They just need a bit more experience. If you are surprised by Bath then you havent been paying very much attention over the past couple of years.
