  1. Which ByLaw, does this reference? Each District, must have a Site Selection Plan on file and I know if any conflicts arise, it gets resolved by their Board of Control, I believe.

It is found under the Policies & Procedures section under Other Board of Control Precedents and Policies, District Tournament Requests.....I am looking at the 06/07 Handbook and it is found on page 114. I cant immediately locate my 07/08 copy.

  2. A college buddy of mine from OH was snacking on a box of Cheez-Its when one of our local KY guys thinking they might be a bit stale asked, "Are those any count" The Buckeye looked curiously at the box and answered, "I dont have any idea how many there are"

Ram, that was perhaps the funniest conversation I ever heard.......

  3. This is my understanding of the 64th district.

First, there is no definite rule of the KHSAA that says that it must be held at a site with any certain seating capacity. That is a red herring. However, if a majority (3) of the schools don't agree with holding the tournament in a particular place, KHSAA can step in.

Unfortunately, a couple of years ago RH's administrator and Fairview's superintendent signed an agreement hastily handed to them by Ashland's AD. I have heard that Rose Hill's admin said he signed it as he was getting in his car after a district meeting and was stopped by Swift. He said he thought it was an attendance sign in sheet. I also understand that neither of them knew what they were signing. The agreement provided for Ashland and BC to get their regular turn hosting the tournament but, in the case of the smaller two, the agreement said "TBA". With this designation, RH and Fairview are preempted from holding the tournament, other than the girls, at home. The agreement goes through 2011.

I beg to differ with you on the bold part.......If you look at post #34, the comments in quotations were taken directly from the KHSAA handbook.

  4. I would suggest a quick trip to your local club fitter/maker first....Not much use in spending $250-$300 on something you cant hit......A good club fitter will help you narrow your choices to clubs best suited to your current swing....Who knows you may pick up a few free swing tips in the process.

I saw a guy a couple years ago and went thru a driver fitting session....cost me $75 bucks and I ended up buying a driver that I never would have even looked without his input.....driver cost me $170 brand new on eBay. So for $245 I greatly improved my game off the tee......

  5. Agreed Bogeyman, they should have the right to keep the tournament if they so choose. That said, it is easy to have it at bigger gyms, where everyone who wants to see the game, can see it. If I had to guess, I would say Fairview gives up their home court for the tournament, because that is what they usually do I think, and Elliott keeps the 62nd in Sandy Hook. Either way is should be up to the host school, or all districts should do a neutral site, every year as was suggested earlier.

They have no choice but to give up their home court......It must be played at a larger venue. The KHSAA has a rule that says....."The schools by majority shall decide what playing facilities can hold the attendance of the last five years of the tournament based on the fan followings of the schools and other logistical needs such as accessibility, parking, etc." In the case of the 64th, the attendance numbers from the OJ years have inflated the numbers a bit. Fairview and Rose Hill cannot "hold the attendance of the last five years" so it must be moved to a larger arena.

  6. QUOTE=CatsCatsCats;2628486]Clemmons was a beast tonight. Ate the Comets up. West was down by 20 some before cutting the lead to 8 in the forth, but couldn't completely get back into the game. West was ice cold and careless with the ball in the first half, Bath took advantage. Clemmons is a top 3 player in the region IMO. Side note the officiating was horrible in this one...but wasn't the reason West lost.[/QUOTE]

First let me say I have no idea who officiated this game but after looking at the box score in todays Independent, I assume one of them might have been Jim Hicks old college roommate.......Personal Fouls: BATH 19 WEST 23 (same disparity in foul calls in the Bath/Rose Hill game) Free Throws: BATH 25 of 35 WEST 15 of 24 (similar disparity in free throws from Bath/Rose Hill) Bath MAKES more free throws than West attempts.....If you remember when these stats went the other direction in favor of Baths opponent then it was inferred by Bath fans and coaches that somthing deceitful must be going on....The question was asked, "How can the foul shots be so lopsided?"

Here we see the same thing.....My point is that just because the fouls and/or free throws are not even does not in any way indicate the consistency or quality of the officiating. You cant have it both ways....when you lose with such stats you blame the officials then when you win with such stats you want to take credit for the win.....cant be both ways.

  7. If you want to aid the recruitment of officals then 2 things must happen......

    1. They must be paid better across the board
    2. They must be shown more respect and/or appreciation across the board from schools and fans.

How many of you have made one of the following statement or one similar to an official? "I wouldnt do your job for any amount of money" or "I dont know why/how you guys do it, getting yelled at every night"

Dont you think the young guys that are being recruited to join the ranks have the same comments? You will see numbers steadily decrease until schools take a stand on how fans are allowed to behave in their gyms, fields etc...

  8. I don't think evaluating by fellow officials would work at all. It's too much of a conflict of interest.

Then you would be getting back to the situation of "contracting" officials like they do in Indiana. I have friends that still officiate and they have contracts years ahead of times for certain schools and games.

    Talk about a biased system.

Somone talked earlier about letting officials rate each other. That would be a hoot. Some people would lose friends if they are honest with people. I had to tell a guy once that he was in over his head and not to do a game (it was a preseason scrimmage). Hardest thing I ever had to do, but it did make my decision easier when I dedcided to hang it up. I knew it was time to go when the speed of the game had picked up and I no longer could get in position. Desire was still there, but the wheels were shot!

Some people never quite learn that however! There are a few D 1 guys out there that need to hang it up for that fact alone!

    :fire:[/QUOT

As I said it was my opinion.........I think I can make a strong case for it too. There is absolutely no conflict of interest for officials to evaluate other officials......I didnt say it would be done in a public forum either. I guarantee that if you give your local group of officials a list of their membership and ask them to pick out the top 10 among them you would end up with the same group of 10 from everyone.....maybe not in the same order but you would still get the cream.......If these guys are to be men of integrity when it comes to enforcing the rules of the game then surely they have enough integrity to offer an educated opinion when it come to evaluation of their fellow offical.

  9. The rating system in Kentucky is ridiculous. You can't go by who is the best officials by who goes to the state tourney. If you have connections you get to go and if you don't deal in the politics you don't. Coaches have 80% of the vote and they have never officiated before in their lives. They don't know if officials are in the right position or know the rules, they just know if they win or lose and who was calling when they lost and put those officials at the bottom for the most part. There are some coaches that do an honest job at this rating system, but to give a coach 80% is just crazy, why not give them the 20% and give someone who goes out and watches and evaluates these officials every night the 80% of the ratings. Seems like that would be the most logical thing to do, no wait the most logical way would be to not give the coaches any say at all who is the best official. That would take care of a lot of the "favors" done in all these regions for votes. We have assigning secrateries and that is who should be rating the officials, that is there job and that is what they are paid for. Coaches are paid to coach and yell at officials, not rate them. That is why the best don't end up at the state tourney, most of the time.

I am standing and applauding this post!!!!!!!!! I agree almost 100%....The only thing I would add is that I personally think part of an officials evaluation should come from his fellow officials

  10. I never said I was quoting the rule book.....You wont find the phrase "shooting motion has ended" in the rule book.....This is where common sense by the official has to come into play.

If you want to split hairs Ms Liberty then lets look at it this way........When I shoot a jump shot, my toes return to the ground before my heals do......All the while my arms are still extended over my head in follow thru......According to your interpretation, I could be fouled as soon as my toes touch the ground and you consider it to be after the shot. I think most good officials would consider this foul to have occured during the shooting motion and award free throws accordingly. Do you realize a player might be considered in the act of shooting even when his feet have yet to leave the groudn to begin a shot? I think if you research the rule book a bit you will find the phrase "normal shooting motion" or very similar words.

  11. My question to go along with this is, why does the shooter always (seemingly) get three free throws if the ball is well past the point of release and he's on his way down? To me, if he or she is fouled in the act of shooting, then by all means, give him three shots. But if it's well after the fact, then IMO it should be "on the floor" like any layup/jumper/runner attempt...

This is basically the definition of an airborne shooter. He is still a shooter until he returns to the floor and his normal shooting motion has ended. If the foul occurs after his shot has completely ended then the penalty would be possession out of bounds or free throws if in the bonus.

  12. I saw an official EJECT a player after the game was over! The official was on his way off the court and the player made contact with the official. In the officials opinion the contact was on purpose. I know the official reported the ejection to the KHSAA as required and I THINK the KHSAA upheld the ejection and the player was suspended for one game.

This player is now a pretty famous athlete in KY......Does anybody know this story?

  13. That is hilarious! Sparks called a "preventive" technical foul on a 7th grader! A SEVENTH GRADER! Said he was"menacing" and "looked at him wrong!" And I saw Clark call a T at Russell 2 years ago the 1st 30 seconds of a JV game. Great officiating there! And if they're so great, why have they not been rated higher and been to the State tourney. Ask a coach before you start rating officials from the stands.

    Not according to Joe Billman.

I guess we can deduce from these statements that IF Billman says numbers are not going up then it must be right since he has been to the State Tourney and all.........????
