  1. I'm guessing Fulton would still have an elementary school in the town.

What is the difference though? Schools, or the lack of them, do little or nothing to change the identity of a city.

We've had that discussion in Harlan County. Evarts is still Evarts and Cumberland is still Cumberland eight years after the high schools closed.

It's kind of a chicken and egg debate, I guess, but if you're town is so small that it only has 90 kids in high school then there isn't much left to save, and keeping a school open that has only a handful of teachers and classes probably isn't helping.

That would depend on the new district. Not always the case. County school may decide that they only need one elementary, one middle, and one high.

I guess since I'm from a town with 100 kids in the high school I could see the point in a school being around. By closing a school, you usually end up dealing with a large empty building in the town. I guess it depends on what side you are on.

  2. I've heard that one before. Keeping a school open doesn't make a city any more relevant if all the people/businesses are gone.

Fulton will be Fulton with or without a school, just like dozens of other cities across the state. Monticello didn't disappear because the school closed a couple of years ago.

Monticello still has a school in the city. I think there are several schools in Monticello. There's a difference if you have no school in the city.

  3. I don't recall having ever seen one of these yet and hearing you guys and gals talk about the smell I decided to google it. I typed in 'bradford pear tree smell' and this was the first thing to pop up, couldn't help but to laugh:

"These flowers, though lovely in appearance, smell like a mixture of rotting fish and semen, according to a variety of web reports, and personal accounts from those in our own newsroom. A tall, deciduous tree called the Bradford Pear (scientific name Pyrus calleryana) is to blame for the raunchy-smelling flowers."

Sounds like someone had one too many nights with your average lady of the evening.

  4. Got to love this Buckhorn story. 170(?) kids in entire high school. Wow! Augusta almost made it with 80. Go Buckhorn, live our dream for all us little schools.

Got to go to Lexington Herald article on Buckhorn this Sunday morning. Mostly about Coach Noble and his AD that have been living another dream as professional wrestlers in the off-season. This guy must be a real competitor! Sorry, this dinosaur can't create a link. Can someone else?

Read the article this morning.... That was hilarious. I like both teams, but I'm going with the Mullets. Fear the Mullet!

  5. I had surgery back in 2011 for an inguinal hernia. Before I could be discharged to go home, they told me I had to go to the bathroom and go #1 first to ensure that everything was in order down there. After I made it the 25 steps to the bathroom in a blazing 10 minutes I tried to go but the pain was unbearable. I looked at the nurse and asked "do you guys have a long term stay discount?" Without missing a beat the nurse replied "no sir, we aren't the type who like to make you breakfast when you wake up. We prefer you to get your stuff and get out while making as little commotion as possible." I started to laugh, which was another painful experience. The nurse apologized for causing me to laugh (and therefore causing pain) but I told her I couldn't be mad at her for that.

Not laughing at the surgery you had, but the response from the nurse was hilarious!!
