  1. I didn't see the entire game, but was there enough to see some nice talent in the younger classes. I thought Ian McGurn ran the ball extremely well today. Jason Waldemeyer played very solid on the D-line and Ben Lofland also had a good day on defense, with the exception of the personnel foul, which I'm sure he will be reminded of during films.

Our prayers go out to the young man and his coaches and teammates injured from Withrow. If anyone has updates please let us know.

  2. QUESTION FOR HIGHLANDS FANS WHO ARE PREDICTING A BLOWOUT:

I don't understand this. It seems that some have been predicting big Highlands blowouts for four straight weeks, and I think it's fair to say that the outcomes of the first three games have not been as lopsided as many expected. If Highlands didnt blow out 1A Beechwood, why would they blow out an Ohio Division I (large school) 1-1 Withrow team that has some athletically talented players on the squad (and the game is at Withrow, no less)????

I'm not sure it's HHS fans predicting the blowouts. It could be non-fans predicting the blowouts knowing full well at times the players get on here and read the posts. Hopefully the majority of the players stay focused and take it one game at a time. I've seen the tape and Withrow does have play makers like you've mentioned.

  3. ]The D was far from good and it seems like everybody knows what the weaknesses are.[/b] As for the offense' date='too many turnovers. All it's going to take is a turnover or two against somebody like St. X,and you can turn out the lights the party is over. The fat lady will be singing loudly. Special teams also needs to get their act together. How is everybody returning kickoffs right up the middle for big yardage against the birds?? Don't get me wrong, there was some great plays on both sides of the ball for the birds, extremely hard hits by the middle Lb (roller),some great catches by Buten and great runs by A.C. The birds need to keep working hard, and maybe we can surprize the team from Ohio when they come to Ft.Thomas. Go birds ,one game at a time. :thumb:[/quote']

I'm not sure I do? The defense was playing without 3 starters due to injuries. I think the underclassmen are stepping up and have done a very good job and will only get better in the weeks to come.

  4. Wow! Was it me or was there an absolute crazy amount of injuries tonight? I have never seen so many in one game. Why is that? Conditioning, getting hit too hard, or just bad luck? I did see some big hits tonight but c'mon.

As far as the game goes, Will was throwing very good tonight. Collinsworth had his usual nasty runs. Buten steps up big, but really, looks like the norm for him. He is good.

On defense, some of these younger kids are starting to step up. Bruns and Abner had some really nice plays. Cam Dierig seems to be everywhere. Only real downfall I see is where is the help for Roller. With him playing inside, it's tougher to shoot the holes. He has guys all over him. Our outside guys need to step up and make some plays. Roller did have some serious hits though. WOW!

Nice to see Jake true and Josh Quillen get some very productive reps.

Beechwood had their usual speedsters. Their QB scrambles like no other. Running backs were very quick. I just hated to see so many kids get hurt. They are not very deep to begin with. God speed to those who did.

On a last note, to the person/s who sat next to me that can't keep comments to themselves about their teams own players especially with the kids parents in front of you, please shut the heck up. They are just kids and from the looks of it, you never put pads on before. Not that that makes any difference. Fellow BGP'ers on top of it so I know they will read this. I would have left too! Probably would have punched him first, then left. Sorry, off my box now.

    Thanks tdy. You're absolutely right!

  5. With the way players train year round, there's no doubt most are leaner and in better shape. I've recently seen kids drop 20 -30 pounds during the off-season and come back looking totally different with greater strength. Plus, there's so many off-season clinics and trainers out there to monitor the progress of each individual. This is something that wasn't around in my day. As for the height of players, well there's not much they can do about that. Either you're going to have it or not.

  6. Coach Barr was a constant for Bluebird Football for over 30 years. How many exactly? How many varsity head coaches did he see? Great coach, a class act all the way, and an underappreciated reason for continued HHS performance. Godspeed, Coach Barr.

I echo your comment 35Bird. He was a great scout to the varsity program for many years as well as being a very successful frosh head coach.

  7. Captains for 2009 were selected this morning. All of these young men have shown leadership throughout their careers at HHS. It's a great honor and they should be congratulated for the way they conduct themselves on and off the football field. Best of luck to you and your teammates this season!

    They are:

    Will Bardo

    Tyler Combs

    Austin Collinsworth

    Cameron Dierig

    Brandon Roller

    Hunter Schlosser

  8. The biggeast surprise was the performance of Pat Towles. From someone who watched most of 2008 freshman practices and all of the games its quite obvious to me that Pat has worked very hard this past year on his quickness, speed and ability to throw accurately to the receivers. Watch for him to become the backup to Barto as the season goes along. Great work Pat.!!

Of course Ozzie Sheenan will continue to make plays. Things look bright for 2010.

I'm sure Towles has worked hard. Good for him. Barto is actually Bardo and let the team get through 2009 before they worry about 2010.

  9. Typical scrimmage in my opinion. However, the Birds starting O, D, and special teams looked to be ready to go. The substitutions were many which you won't find during the regular season. But it was a good measuring stick for the entire squad. Keep working boys! Everyone can get better!:thumb:

  10. I don't think high schools should retire player numbers. If a high school really wants to do it, then the criteria should be unparalleled accomplishments in high school AND even greater accomplishments after high school. I can think of nothing a high school athlete can accomplish in high school that is great enough to warrant retiring a number.

    I agree!

  11. New guy here. How's everybody doing!I'm an old birds fan that has few computer skills and has never communicated on the net.I have enjoyed looking at this tread and have finally been able to find information about the upcoming season. You folks have got me pumped about this group of kids! Thanks!I went to highlands years ago but have always followed the Birds.Go to games when I can,and try my best to make the state finals.I was on the team but was to slow to start, but loooooved busting heads with some very tough kids!It was a great experience that made basic training a piece of (CAKE)!Other men would ask me,how can you take this misery so easily! How can a short, fat boy like you run 2 miles without walking some of it!I would say with pride that I came from Ft. Thomas Highlands football, and a double session in death valley made this look like cub scout camp! Please forgive me for not having much to add,you guys are my only source of information.I have lived in Pendleton Co. for over 20 years.I would love to watch a practice but don't know if it is permited,it used to be frowned upon. Thanks again!

Like many of us, you sound if as you've got great memories from playing at HHS. Please come around and introduce yourself. It's great to watch practice and swap stories about the old days.

  12. How are things on the O-line set when they have not even put the gear on yet? Who is Snyder? Where are Dierig and/or Hahn? Isn't Beck a little on the small side to be playing tackle? What happened to putting Welz at tackle rather than tight end?

Dale likes to get his O-line set early and the rest fall where they may. Snyder moved into Ft. Thomas late winter early spring. He is a senior. Beck has put on some weight and should be plenty big enough for tackle. Welz has been getting alot of work at TE.

  13. Athletically and at their skill positions, there aren't many teams that Highlands can't match up with. Do they have the depth on their lines to beat X this year? I'm asking b/c I have no clue. I know that one just signed with Miami and their top 5 will always be fundamentally sound and aggressive, but will they have the depth behind them when they face a very good St. X line. I hope so, nothing would be better during the regular season than for NKY's best team to drub one of Cincy's.

It appears the O-line is set with Combs at center, Schlosser and Snyder (sp) at guards, Grubbs and Beck at the tackles.

  14. When does the kid expect to hear from the KHSAA regarding whether he'll be eligible to play football this year or not?

Let's just hope this doesn't drag into the season. That can only be accomplished by the KHSAA and school doing their homework!
